Erhard J. Alm, Inventor and Entrepreneur

The Mystery of Vínarterta: In Search of an Icelandic Ethnic Identity
ABSTRACT: Does there exist a distinct Icelandic ethnic identity in contemporary Canada?
To what degree is it similar and to what degree is it different from the traditional
Icelandic national identity? Referring to poetry, telepathic messages and works of
scholarship, as well as interviews with Canadians of Icelandic origin, this paper
tackles these questions. A special emphasis is placed on what Herbert J. Gans has
defined as “ethnic symbols,” such as linguistic ethnic markers, ceremonial holidays and ethnic food. Some of these
symbols, in particular the pastry known as “vínarterta”, suggest not only how different Icelandic ethnic identity in Canada is from Icelandic
national ethnicity, but they also reveal the dire necessity for it to be so.RÉSUMÉ: Existe-t-il une identité ethnique islandaise distincte dans le Canada contemporain?
“An Exploration of Teachers’ Pedagogy and Perceptions of Their Culturally Diverse Learners in Manitoba (Canada), Norway, and Iceland”
ABSTRACT: Multiculturalism is the ideology that ascribes special value to communities
comprising people of varied nationalities, cultural backgrounds and religious leanings.
The challenges facing a multicultural society are familiar in Canada but relatively
new to Scandinavia. The question arises, How do multicultural societies deal with
challenges posed by their diversity? More particularly what are the multicultural
teaching practices by which these societies seek to incorporate students into a unified
yet diverse community which encourages the preservation of the ethnic, cultural and
religious values. The object of the present research, conducted in Manitoba (Canada),
Norway, and Iceland, was to examine selected teachers’ preparation for teaching culturally
diverse learners, their ability to meet the individual needs of students, and their
perceptions of how their culturally diverse learners adapt to a new cultural community.RÉSUMÉ: Le multiculturalisme est l’idéologie qui attribue une valeur particulière
‘Girl Interrupting’: History and Art as Clairvoyance in the Fiction of Vigdís Grímsdóttir
ABSTRACT: The year 1980 marks a distinctive change and exciting renewal in the general
development of post-war Icelandic fiction. An obsessive preoccupation with rural nostalgia
and urban malaise gradually gives way to a decidedly anti-realist fiction which celebrates
the wonders of everyday day life in the city. The term magical realism is often used in this context, and indeed, there can be little doubt that the Icelandic
translation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude in 1978 constituted an important influence on writers during this period. One contemporary
Icelandic author who has made striking use of magical realist strategies to dislodge
the current impulses of modernity in Icelandic culture and disrupt imposed ways of
perceiving reality is Vigdís Grímsdóttir. The aim of this article is to discuss the
innovative ways in which Vigdís has used Icelandic story-telling and folklore traditions,
preserved and passed down mostly by women, to reaffirm, from a female perspective,
a localised cultural imagination within a contemporary globalised Icelandic urban
Vikings in the Nor’ Wast: The Roots of Orkney’s Identity in Norway and Canada
ABSTRACT: This article delves into the cultural identity of the Orkney Islands by
examining the narratives people tell about Orkney’s historical relationships with
Norway and Canada. Orkney, just off the northern coast of Scotland, was settled by
Scandinavians during the Viking period, and the people of Orkney still draw strongly
on Scandinavian, primarily Norwegian, imagery in their own conceptions of the islands’
identity. A millennium after the Vikings arrived, people went from Orkney to Canada
with the Hudson’s Bay Company, and family and cultural ties were forged between Orcadians
and First Nations people throughout Canada. I explore both relationships through an
ethnographic study of Orcadians’ ideas about their islands’ connections to Canada
and to Norway. Both relationships include characterizations of a tough, rugged, individualistic
person—a Viking explorer
Kurt Wallander’s Journey into Autumn: A Reading of Henning Mankell\u27s The Fifth Woman
ABSTRACT: The last decade has been a golden age of detective fiction in the four Scandinavian
countries: Sweden; Denmark; Norway; and Iceland. If Henning Mankell stands in the
first rank of Nordic mystery writers, it is because he takes the type of book known
in Sweden as a “deckare” and gives it the complexity of a superior novel. Mankell not only endows his now
famous detective, Kurt Wallander, with a brooding depth of character, but places him
in a strikingly realistic setting, and a three-dimensional social context subject
to the forces of change. Like the novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky and Thomas Hardy, the
Wallander series has a memorable balance of plot, character, and atmosphere. In an
article in The New York Times Book Review, Marilyn Stasio provides a concise summation
of Mankell’s strengths as a novelist: “Apart from his uncommon skill at devising dense, multilayered plots, Mankell’s forte
is matching mood to setting and subject.”RÉSUMÉ: Cette dernière décennie est considérée comme l’âge d’or du roman policier
