From Working Class Drama to Academic Showdown: On Carl Th. Dreyer’s Use of His Literary Source in Två Människor [Two People] (1945)
ABSTRACT: The aim of the article is to analyze Danish film director Carl Th.
Dreyer’s motives for using Willy Oscar Somin’s play Close
Quarters (1935) as a source for his twelfth feature film, Två
Människor [Two People] (1945). This film is almost completely forgotten today,
in part because the director himself chose to disown it, but in part because
film historians have hitherto been unable to locate its exact textual source. My
concern has been to examine how loyal Dreyer actually wanted to stay to the
themes and narrative of his source. Newly discovered archival material
demonstrates that Dreyer actually thought of making a more political movie. This
material leads to a more general discussion of Dreyer as an adaptor of literary
works. I conclude that Dreyer made Två Människor in a period of
his directing career where he wanted to distance himself from his literary
Behind Idealism: The Discrepancy between Philosophy and Reality in The Cinema of Lars von Trier
ABSTRACT:
“All my life I’ve been interested in the discrepancy between philosophy and reality,
between conviction and its implementation.” (Lars von Trier, 2005)
Most scholarly attention has so far been directed towards the elements of form
and cinematography in Lars von Trier’s work. In this paper I will instead focus on
the thematic and philosophical qualities of his work. Through analysis of protagonist
types and plot structures, I will show how “the discrepancy between philosophy and reality” functions as a central underlying structure in the films. But also how this discrepancy
shifts according to gender and over time in von Trier’s later production. I will also
examine von Trier’s ties to nineteenth-century Scandinavian drama and German philosopher
Friedrich Nietzsche. These are important connections which have as yet not received
the attention they deserve.RÉSUMÉ:
davantage
Modes of Representation in Ingmar Bergman’s Gycklarnas afton
ABSTRACT: Ingmar Bergman’s 1953 Gycklarnas afton [Sawdust and Tinsel] is a film that has received little attention, despite major critics’ agreement that
it is a masterpiece, Bergman’s first classic. To ascertain why it warrants the critical
acclaim of most serious film scholars, this article uses a close-reading methodology
to examine four different aspects of the work: the frequent occurrence of metafilmic
moments, the radically experimental Frost and Alma sequence, the film’s extensive
and complex use of mirrors, and the unusual editing and shot compositions that mark
the beginning and end of the film. These strategies document a self-reflexive aesthetic,
a thorough-going preoccupation with the notion of performance both within and outside
theatrical institutions, presenting a tacit argument for the impossibility of authentic
subjectivity, the importance of the mask. Ultimately the film presages precisely those
elements of Bergman’s later production that have made him one of the most important
Doubling and Redoubling Bergman: Notes on the Dialectic of Disgrace and Disappearance
ABSTRACT: This paper plots the interrelations of some of the oppositions pervading
the work of Ingmar Bergman, particularly ones between Romanticism and Expressionism,
a Scandinavian cinema and a German one identified with the natural and the stylized
respectively, art cinema and traditional art, masculine and feminine, and face and
mask. In each case, selecting one pole nevertheless leaves the other in play. The
works’ unsettled status reflects their positioning between an art cinema that risks
alienating audiences, and a tradition threatened by inauthenticity. Bergman’s concern
with the dangers of the self’s visibility correlates with themes of shaming and with
the difficulties of the actor’s status, which accentuate those of a modernity characterised
by mobility. One consequence, a simultaneously real and metaphorical feminization
of the male artistic self, entails a dual conceptualization of disappearance, which
oscillates between the positive and the negative. Identity becomes always double,
each face a mask, and vice versa.RÉSUMÉ: Cet essai retrace les interrelations entre certaines oppositions imprégnant
Norwave: Norwegian Cinema 1997-2006
ABSTRACT: This article will examine Norwegian cinema from 1997 to 2006, a period marked
by a growing awareness of both the international film market and the demands of an
increasingly sophisticated domestic market on the part of Norwegian filmmakers. This
period has come to be known as “Norwave.” It will be argued that the films of the Norwave attempt a two-fold task—on the one
hand they seek to gain international acclaim of the kind associated with the likes
of the Danish Dogma 95 directors and Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki, while on the
other hand they attempt to create a public forum for the working out of specific issues
in contemporary Norwegian identity and ideology. By analyzing eight of the most successful
Norwegian films from the decade, the study maps out this tension between these global
Roy Andersson’s Cinematic Poetry and the Spectre of César Vallejo
ABSTRACT: Sånger från andra våningen [Songs from the Second Floor] was Roy Andersson’s first feature film in 25 years when it won the Special Jury Prize
at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000. It exemplifies the maturation of a distinctive
filmmaking style Andersson developed in two and half decades of making shorts and
advertising films and testifies to his decades-long engagement with Peruvian modernist
César Vallejo’s poetry. Andersson is known for his contentious relationship with Sweden’s
film establishment, and his critiques of Nordic contemporary filmmakers parallel Vallejo’s
similarly pointed critiques, in 1930s Paris, of the so-called “revolutionary” agenda of French Surrealists. The formal correspondences between Vallejo’s modernist
poetry and Andersson’s “trivialist” cinema are likewise striking. In this essay, I argue that the spectre of Vallejo
has so informed the development of Andersson’s distinctive vision and style as a filmmaker
that an investigation of the interart correspondences between this unlikely pairing
Land og synir: An Interview with Ágúst Guðmundsson
ABSTRACT: Land og Synir, based on a novel of the same name by Indriði G. Þorsteinsson, was the first feature-length
film supported by the Icelandic Film Fund after its founding in 1978. Premiered in
1980 to great enthusiasm at home and warm, intelligent approval abroad, the film remains
the benchmark for the Icelandic film industry that it inaugurated. The interview that
follows a brief introduction intends to give Ágúst Guðmundsson, the author of the
film, an opportunity to reflect on its achievement thirty years on, in the light of
his subsequent successful career and the emergence of filmmaking as a major art form
and industry in Iceland.
Liv Ullmann’s Handling of Religious Themes in Her Adaptation of Sigrid Undset’s The Wreath
ABSTRACT: In 1995 Liv Ullmann released Kristin Lavransdatter, a film adaptation of The Wreath, the first novel in Sigrid Undset’s trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter, a novelistic reconstruction of fourteenth-century psychology and religious culture
published between 1920 and 1922. This work was crucial to Undset’s winning the Nobel
Prize in 1928 “principally for her powerful descriptions of Northern life during the Middle Ages”; though its historical accuracy has been challenged, the affection with which this
work is held by Norwegian readers endures. So Ullmann was taking on well-known text,
which had been authored by a keen Catholic apologist, when she undertook her adaptation.
Her version of the story—or rather versions, since three different cuts have been
released—reduces the religious dimension of the original while increasing the focus
on the psychological exploration of family tensions, whether between generations,
between marriage partners, between siblings—or between friends. A comparison of the
two works, preceded by a brief discussion of Undset’s religious writings, illuminates
Op med hodet: Tancred Ibsen’s 1933 Experiment in Cinematic Modernism
ABSTRACT: The grandson of two of Norway’s most famous nineteenth-century writers,
Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Tancred Ibsen holds a central place in the
history of Norwegian cinema. He was its leading director in the 1930s and 1940s and
is best remembered for Den store barnedåpen [The Great Baptism] (1931), Fant [Tramp] (1937) and Gjest Baardsen (1939). Ibsen’s third feature film, Op med hodet [Cheer Up!], from 1933, has meanwhile remained largely forgotten and unseen outside of film archives.
Ibsen later wrote in his autobiography that, regarding his own development, no film
had meant as much to him or taught him as much. With Op med hodet, Ibsen self-consciously borrowed from the polar opposite worlds of the Hollywood
popular-genre film and the European avant-garde cinema. Despite the film’s commercial
failure and relative obscurity to date, Op med hodet reveals Tancred Ibsen as a modernist European filmmaker and artist attempting technical
and narrative experiments radical for their time in Nordic cinema.RÉSUMÉ: Tancred Ibsen, petit-fils de deux des écrivains norvégiens du dix-neuvième
