    Realist, Non-Naturalist Ethics and Librarianship

    No full text
The fundamental premise of this paper is that the work of information professionals relies upon, and is an extension of, memory. Memory is an essential element in shaping consciousness, so it is likewise essential to information work. The place the past occupies is a complex one, as will be demonstrated in the presentation. The past cannot simply be categorized as history, since “history” depends on agency beyond the individual information professional. Models offered by Bergson and Wilson will bring the complexity to the fore and will illustrate how information professionals rely on memory for the most fundamental aspects of information work

Communicating with Library Patrons and Dementia Patients: Tracing an Ethic of Care Practice in Professional Communication Guidelines

    No full text
This presentation reports on the initial results ofa SSHRC-funded research project involving thecomplex interactions between information, communication and dementia. We use an ethic ofcare framework to compare prominent guidelinesfor reference librarians with guidelines forworkers in long-term dementia care settings. In so doing, we explore how both sets of guidelines frame the act of communication as a combination of regulated procedure and empathetic discourse

Information-not-thing: further problems with and alternatives to the belief that information is physical

    No full text
In this short paper, we show that a popular view in information science, information-as-thing,fails to account for a common example of information that seems physical. We then demonstrate how thedistinction between types and tokens, recently used to analyse Shannon information, can account for thissame example by viewing information as abstract, and discuss existing definitions of information that areconsistent with this approach.

Digital decolonization and activist tagging in the Post-Apology Residential School Database

    No full text
The Post-apology Residential School Database, or PARSD, is a collection of digital and digitized news media responses to and representations of Indian Residential Schools since the Canadian government’s official apology in Parliament on June 11th, 2008. In this conceptual paper, we discuss PARSD tagging practices, describing how our archival description approach is informed by feminist and anti-colonial theoretical frameworks and outlining how project members and ‘guest taggers’ describe, organize, and display PARSD records to promote decolonization. We conclude by considering both the potential and possible limitations that these practices may play in decolonizing and reconciling research.

A Post Fifty Shades of Grey Examination of Canadian Public Library Collections

    No full text
The phenomenon surrounding Fifty Shades of Grey (FSOG) created a new and public conversation about erotica and erotic romance literature. Although the phenomenon surrounding FSOG has faded, the sub-genre of erotica/erotic romance is still of interest. Traditional and nontraditional LIS review sources were examined for erotica/erotic romance titles to determine characteristics of titles reviewed, trends seen in the reviews, and to uncover the uptake of reviewed materials in Canadian libraries. Findings show some distinct characteristics in titles along with an influence of FSOG in the reviews, and a mismatch between the review sources examined and an example of a public library’s collection.

Undergraduate Students’ Academic Information and Help-Seeking Behaviours using an Anonymous Facebook Confessions Page

    No full text
Best Practitioner Paper / Prix du meilleur article par un professionnelThis research examines undergraduate students’ academic help-seeking behaviours by mining anonymous posts from a university Facebook Confessions page. From a dataset of 2,712 public posts, researchers identified 708 Confessions (26.1%) that supported student-student learning exchanges. Using a mixed methods methodology informed by a social constructivist framework, analysis of these social media interactions demonstrates that students use Confessions posts to legitimately inform their undergraduate learning and support their academic experience. Researchers conclude that Facebook Confessions can enable rich academic help-seeking and other information behaviours, and that these sites should be taken seriously by administrators, faculty, researchers, and students.

A Benjaminian Exploration of Library as Place

    No full text
This paper presents the case for using Walter Benjamin’s study of modernity, The Arcades Project, as theoretical lens through which to consider both the public library as a place and library as place research more generally. The public library, at once a “past become space” and a contemporary institution, is a site of multiple dialectics and transformative thresholds.

Information Visualizations as a Tool to Study Users’ Social Media Privacy Concerns

    No full text
The amount and complexity of data that can be accessed from social media has been increasing exponentially. We examine the value of using information visualizations as a tool to study people’s attitudes and perceptions regarding their social media data being used by third parties. In the context of using social media to screen job applicants, we investigate the role of visualizations in studying users’ social media privacy concerns. Utilizing an online survey of 454 participants, we compare participants’ comfort levels in relation to different types of publicly accessible social media data. The results partially support the supposition that analytical information based on some form of data analysis will receive a stronger reaction when accompanied by representative visualizations
