Show, Tell, Bridge : Pop - up Storytelling in the community
This proposed poster reports on "pop-up" object-narrative sessions within two community-focused farmers\u27 markets in Toronto, Canada, and the data gathered for current research on the affordance of objects in negotiating individual and group identity. How do we impart information about ourselves in reference to common everyday objects, and through stories about a favourite vegetable? Findings from the study will inform the design of programmatic guidelines for objects and storytelling within a community setting
I dentifying Core Competencies for Records Management and Information Governance Professionals: A Job Advertisement A nalysis
Records and information management (RIM) has been well needed in both public and private sectors for decades. The recent progression toward enterprise wide information governance (IG) provides a good example of RIM\u27s fast-pacedevolution. However, what should those being hired for a RIM/IG position know? What other qualities should they bring to the job in order to survive and thrive? Unfortunately, there is a dearth of empirical research that addresses these concerns. This proposed poster will report an on-going project that aims to identify core competencies for this group of informationprofessionals by using a job advertisement content analysis approach
FRBR and Models of Semantic Cognition
This paper will use research in cognitive science, particularly the mechanical modeling of semantic cognition, to suggest ways in which the model of the Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records (FRBR) can be mobilized in a fashion that is consistent with linked data, knowledge discovery and artificial intelligence. The shift from hierarchical models to those based on parallel distributed processing suggest new and innovative ways in which FRBR can enhance library catalogues in the future.
Life is Suffering: Thrownness, Duhkha, Gaps, and the Origin of Existential-Spiritual Needs for Information
LIS scholars have spent considerable time investigating the incipient stages of information seeking: the so-called “information need” as well as a host of other motivators. A study of twenty New Kadampa Buddhists, whose experiences were collected through semi-structured interviews, sought to explore their spiritual information practices and their motivations for engaging in such behaviour. An analysis of these interviews suggests that Martin Heidegger’s concept of thrownness can be paralleled with Buddhism’s First Noble Truth and Dervin’s gap metaphor, all which identify existential-level faults as inherent to the human condition. This paper offers that it is these closely-related problematic elements of human existence that are the origin of spiritual and existential motivations for engaging in spiritual information practices.
How librarians make decisions: The interplay of subjective and quantitative factors in the cancellation of the “Big Deal”
This study examines the attempt of Western University librarians to cancel the Wiley big deal in 2016 through interviews with 13 librarians involved in the cancellation project. The motivation for the study is to understand the difficulties the librarians faced in cancelling the Wiley package and to design a model that would take into consideration both the quantitative and qualitative factors involved in their decision-making. Using the Evidence-based Library and Information Practice model, the study found that subjective factors played a large part in their decisions, making it difficult to cancel journals even when quantitative factors provided strong evidence for cancellation.
Researching the Researchers: Gathering Data on Academics’ Use of Technology
Bonded design, a participatory design methodology developed by information science researchers, is used as the framework for a university-wide initiative, the faculty IT liaison program, where faculty members and IT professionals work together as peers in design teams to examine and assess technologies. Bonded design met the program criteria: a limited and finite number of design sessions, opportunities to analyse data in situ to inform an iterative design process, and a framework to help two disparate groups (users and designers) to interact and collaborate with one another to generate innovative ideas for designing more userfriendly technologies.
Ethics: To Do or Not To Do?
This paper compares the 2012 International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions’ Code of Ethics for Librarians and Other Information Workers and the 2013 Data Science Association’s Data Science Code of Professional Conduct and discusses the disjuncture and related considerations that might strengthen practical understandings of the implications of ethics in library and information professional practice. This paper cautions against conflating a data scientist’s ethical framework with those of the traditional librarian and supports the development of a more robust framework for library and information ethics and a more comprehensive and inclusive framework for thinking about and conceptualizing data ethics.
The invisibility of ruling texts: An institutional ethnographic scoping review of family caregivers’ information work
To make visible how different facets of family caregivers’ eldercare work are highlighted or obscured in academic writing and research, this institutional ethnography-based scoping review examined the conceptualizations and portrayals of family caregivers’ information work in scholarship and the degree to which this type of work is recognized. In doing so, this study deepens our understanding of the complex relationship between information and care by exploring how texts come to regulate our understanding about and research surrounding information-related care work
Scientific progress or organizational innovation? A comparison of two turns in Library and Information Science
This paper discusses the transformation of library and information science (LIS) from adiscipline narrowly concerned with classification and preservation in libraries and archives toone that includes a wide range of fields and professional training programs. Two alternative butnot mutually exclusive explanations may account for these developments. These changes couldreflect normal scientific progress as the discipline matures. The changes could also be the resultof isomorphic organizational changes in response to shifts in the environment and a need torealign the institutional logics of educational and professional organizations with those of theacademy. These explanations are explored through a comparison of two periods during whichLIS experienced rapid disciplinary and organizational changes: the decades during and afterWorld War II and the final decade of the 20th century. These abbreviated case studies suggestthat both explanations of disciplinary change provide some analytical leverage for explainingdifferent aspects of the development of LIS
Beyond Information Access: Assessing the Migration Information Practices of Diverse Newcomer Communities to Canada to Customize S ettl ement Information Provision
Drawing from research with Afghan refugee youth in Toronto, Ontario, and Filipino permanent residents in Winnipeg, Manitoba, this paper examines newcomer information practices during migration and settlement, suggesting that how newcomer communities engage with settlement information has direct implications for the methods that information professionals might use to reach them
