Cultural Heritage Informatics: Past, Present, and Future
No full textThis paper briefly traces the informational history and contemporary formalization of Cultural Heritage Informatics as a distinct domain within IS/LIS, motivated by recent calls for more critical, ethical, and community-oriented interrogations of IS/LIS resulting from recent debates on our professional identity. We unpack the conceptual history and disciplinary intellectual geography of “cultural heritage” and “informatics” to recount prior interpretations of the field. Next, we articulate a holistic domain-specific informatics model to guide the study of cultural heritage within IS/LIS. We conclude by articulating ethical imperatives and new directions for Cultural Heritage Informatics in research, teaching, and practice.
Informatique du patrimoine culturel: Passé, présent, et futur
RésuméCet article retrace brièvement l’histoire informationnelle et la reconnaissance formelle récente de l’Informatique appliquée au Patrimoine Culturel en tant que domaine distinct au sein de l’IS/LIS, en réponse à des demandes croissantes pour une réflexion plus critique, éthique, et communautaire sur les pratiques de l’IS/LIS et l’identité du domaine. Nous analysons l’histoire conceptuelle et la géographie intellectuelle disciplinaire du patrimoine culturel et de l\u27informatique afin de retracer les précédentes interprétations du domaine. Ensuite, nous articulons un modèle informatique holistique, spécifique au domaine, pour guider l’étude du patrimoine culturel au sein de l’IS/LIS. Nous concluons en articulant les impératifs éthiques et les nouvelles directions de l’Informatique appliquée au Patrimoine Culturel en matière de recherche, d’enseignement, et de pratique
Quantum Leap: Practice Architectures as a Conceptual Tool in Information Practices Research
No full textThis paper makes the case for practice architectures (Kemmis, et al., 2014; Mahon et al. 2017) as a useful conceptual tool in information practices research. It argues that practice architectures provides a meso-sociological framework which might be used to address long-standing critique of the narrow focus on the individual information seeker in traditional information research. The paper provides a brief overview of the framework’s key concepts (e.g. cultural-discursive, material-economic, social-political arrangements). It uses findings from an ongoing study of information practices in archaeological contexts to provide an example of how they can be applied to information practices research
Applying LLMs and Semantic Technologies for Data Extraction in Literature Reviews: A Pilot Study in LIS
No full textThis pilot study evaluates the capabilities of two LLMs, Mistral Small 3.1 and GPT-4o mini, in performing ontology-based data extraction to support literature reviews in library and information science (LIS). A sample of four published systematic reviews was selected as ground truth data. The open-access publications included in these reviews (n = 47) were collected as inputs for the models to perform semantic information extraction, using classes from the Document Components Ontology (DoCO). These preliminary findings highlight the opportunities and challenges of using AI and semantic technologies to streamline literature reviews in the social sciences.
Application des GML et des technologies sémantiques pour l\u27extraction de données dans les revues de littérature : Une étude pilote en sciences de l\u27information
RésuméCette étude pilote évalue les capacités de deux GML, Mistral Small 3.1 et GPT-4o mini, pour effectuer une extraction de données basée sur une ontologie pour supporter les revues de littérature en bibliothéconomie et sciences de l\u27information (BSI). Un échantillon de quatre revues systématiques publiées a été sélectionné comme données véridiques de base. Les publications à accès libre incluses dans ces revues (n = 47) ont été choisies comme entrées dans les modèles, pour qu\u27ils effectuent une extraction d\u27information sémantique en utilisant les catégories du Document sur les composantes de l\u27ontologie (DoCO). Ces résultats préliminaires soulignent les opportunités et les défis de l\u27utilisation de l\u27IA et des technologies sémantiques pour l\u27organisation des revues littéraires en sciences sociales.

Library SCEB Model: Advocating Positive Psychology Interventions in Library Settings
No full textLibrary SCEB is a model that reframes library practices by building on elements from prominent theories in the positive psychology movement. We assert that certain types of space redesign (S), collection building (C), innovative events and programming (E), and bibliotherapy (B) are closely aligned with Positive Psychology Interventions (PPIs), which have been found experimentally to successfully improve subjective wellbeing (positive emotions, engagement, character strengths) in several disciplines, including education, health care, and organizational studies. We identify challenges with the Library SCEB efforts and recommend strategies for further integration of PPIs in the context of academic, public, and school librarianship.
Modèle SCEB en bibliothèque : Recommandation pour les interventions de psychologie positive en milieu documentaire
RésuméLa Bibliothèque SCEB est un modèle qui encadre les pratiques des bibliothèques en s’appuyant sur des éléments de théories importantes dans l’acheminement de la psychologie positive. Nous pouvons affirmer que certains types de réaménagement des espaces (S), d’élaboration de collections (C), d’évènements et d’activités innovantes (E) et de bibliothérapie (B) sont étroitement alignés avec les interventions de psychologie positive (PPIs), qui ont été expérimentalement trouvées pour améliorer avec succès le bien-être subjectif (émotions positives, engagement, forces de caractère) dans plusieurs disciplines, incluant l’éducation, les services de santé et les études organisationnelles. Nous avons identifié les défis rencontrés par la Bibliothèque SCEB et recommandé des stratégies pour une future intégration des PPIs dans le contexte de l’académie publique, et des bibliothécaires scolaires.

AI in Canadian LIS Journals: A Text Analysis
No full textSince its inception in 1955, the term “artificial intelligence” (AI) has seen a recent revival with generative AI. But what does this mean for Canadian Library and Information Sciences (LIS) responses? Text analysis was performed in 56 AI articles from nine Canadian LIS journals spanning 1982 to 2024. Using diachronic and sentiment trends, the identified corpus highlights that past familiarity with more traditional AI has led to a balanced and possibly more critical sentiment that provides context, acceptance, and concern for future generative AI technologies within the Canadian LIS landscape.
L\u27IA dans les revues canadiennes de BSI: une analyse de texte
RésuméDepuis sa création en 1955, le terme « intelligence artificielle » (IA) a connu un renouveau récent avec l\u27IA générative. Mais qu\u27est-ce que cela signifie pour les bibliothèques canadiennes ? Une analyse de texte a été effectuée sur 56 publications rédigées par l\u27IA, provenant de neuf revues canadiennes en BSI entre 1982 et 2024. En utilisant les tendances diachroniques et de sentiment, le corpus souligne que la familiarité passée avec l\u27IA plus traditionnelle a conduit à un sentiment équilibré et peut-être plus critique qui fournit contexte, acceptation et préoccupation pour les futures technologies en IA générative sur le plan canadien de la BSI.

Mapping Environmental Science: An OpenAlex Review

Using a mixed methods analysis, we graphed the concepts using GraphViz and compared the connections between subcategories with other categorization systems. The problems that leaped out at us were hierarchization, redundancy, and relevance issues, which could make it more challenging to stumble upon relevant information in environmental science research
