"Like a Splinter had Come Out of Her": A Poetic Inquiry of Shared Reading
No full textPoetry offers a valuable resource at this moment of need for language that not only informs but also connects, enacts, and creates. With this paper, I present a selection of findings from the poetic inquiry phase of my doctoral research examining what happens when we bring people together to read aloud and discuss poetry and short stories. I create and share three sets of poems: found poems from the transcripts of my interviews with reading group participants, found poems from the work of relevant theorists, and threshold poems that weave in my voice as the poet-researcher. The poems reveal how the cultivated liminal space of shared reading engenders a practice of listening otherwise that facilitates resonant relations.

RésuméLa poésie est une ressource précieuse pendant cette ère où on a besoin de langage qui, non seulement informe, mais aussi connecte, promulgue et crée. Dans cet article, je présente une sélection de résultats tirés de la phase d\u27enquête de ma recherche doctorale, qui examine ce qui arrive quand on rassemble des gens pour lire à voix haute et discuter d\u27œuvres littéraires. Je crée et partage trois ensembles de poèmes: des poèmes trouvés dans les transcriptions de mes entrevues avec les participants du groupe de lecture, des poèmes trouvés dans les travaux de théoriciens pertinents ainsi que des poèmes de seuil qui incluent ma voix en tant que chercheuse-poète. Les poèmes révèlent comment l\u27espace liminal cultivé par la lecture partagée peut engendrer une pratique d\u27écoute autrement seulement vécue par le biais du bien-être relationnel.

Canadian Libraries Use by Immigrants from Ukraine: Work in Progress
No full textThis presentation addresses the use of libraries by Ukrainian immigrants in Canada based on a mixed methods study conducted primarily in Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada. The objectives are to investigate the frequency and purpose of library use by the participants, and their preference for library type and services. The findings are important for improving library services to immigrants and refugees.
L’utilisation des bibliothèques canadiennes par les immigrants d’Ukraine: un travail en course
RésuméCette présentation traite de l\u27utilisation des bibliothèques par les immigrants ukrainiens au Canada, sur la base d\u27une étude à méthodes mixtes menée principalement en Saskatchewan et en Alberta, au Canada. Les objectifs sont d\u27étudier la fréquence et le but de l\u27utilisation des bibliothèques par les participants, ainsi que leurs préférences en matière de types de bibliothèques et de services. Les résultats sont importants pour améliorer les services de bibliothèque destinés aux immigrants et aux réfugiés.

An Evidence-Based Approach to Advancing Open Science at the University of Ottawa: Experiences from the Open Science Working Group
No full textIn 2023, the University of Ottawa formed an Open Science Working Group charged with examining the state of open science at uOttawa, defining its goals towards open research practices, and recommending an action plan to position the university as an open science leader. The working group’s monthly meetings and final report were informed by a strong evidence base, including analyses of uOttawa’s research output, a review of national and international open science policies and practices, and estimates of expenditures on open access fees. This paper provides a detailed account of these processes and methods, providing insights for institutions seeking to develop their own open science strategies.
Une approche fondée sur des données probantes pour faire avancer la science ouverte à l\u27Université d\u27Ottawa: les expériences du Groupe de travail sur la science ouverte
RésuméEn 2023, l\u27uOttawa a formé un groupe de travail sur la science ouverte qui s\u27est chargé d\u27examiner l\u27état actuel de la science ouverte à l\u27uOttawa, de définir les objectifs de l\u27uOttawa en matière de pratiques de recherche ouverte et de recommander un plan d\u27action visant à positionner l\u27uOttawa en tant que chef de file en science ouverte. Les réunions mensuelles et le rapport final du groupe de travail se sont appuyés sur des données probantes comprenant des analyses de la production de recherche à l\u27uOttawa, des dépenses liées au libre accès ainsi que des politiques et des pratiques en science ouverte. Ce travail présente un compte rendu détaillé de ces processus et méthodes, qui peut être utile aux institutions qui souhaitent élaborer leurs propres stratégies en science ouverte.

Soft Skills are Important in Doctoral Degree Program: A Reflection by Doctoral Students
No full textDoctoral students need both hard skills (i.e., technical skills) and soft skills (i.e., social skills) to manage their learning journey and to succeed in their program of study. The paper presents findings from a qualitative study conducted with doctoral students enrolled in one of the Canadian U15 universities and studying in diverse doctoral degree programs. The study presents findings from the experiential reflection of doctoral students on the use of soft skills to succeed in their program of study. The participating students suggested a range of “non-academic” skills (i.e., soft skills) that were important in their learning journey such as communication, time management, conflict management, stress management, expectation management, work ethics, self- discipline and motivation, power navigation and others. This research aims to identify a wide range of soft skills that doctoral students need to move successfully in their program of study and contribute to the growing body of literature in the area of soft skills, particularly in the context of doctoral students and their programs.
Les compétences relationnelles en contexte d\u27études doctorales : Une réflexion par des étudiants au doctorat
RésuméLes étudiants au doctorat ont besoin à la fois de connaissances spécialisées et de compétences relationnelles pendant leur programme d\u27étude. Une étude qualitative a été faite auprès d\u27étudiants au doctorat dans une des universités canadiennes U15. Les résultats présentés dans cette affiche sont la réflection expérientielle d\u27étudiants au doctorat. Les étudiants au doctorat participants ont laissé entendre qu\u27ils avaient besoin d\u27une variété de compétences relationnelles, incluant la communication, la gestion du temps, la gestion des conflits, la gestion du stress, la gestion des attentes, l\u27éthique de travail, la discipline, la navigation du pouvoir, la motivation intrinsèque, ainsi que d\u27autres compétences. Cette étude vise à contribuer au nombre grandissant de littérature portant sur les compétences relationnelles plus précisément appliquée au contexte des étudiants au doctorat et le besoin pour diverses compétences relationnelles dans leur parcours d\u27apprentissage.

From Quantum Leaps to Stumbles: Unveiling the Journey of Academic Inquiry of Library and Information Science Researchers in Africa
No full textUnderstanding the journey of researchers in LIS, with a focus on both quantum leaps and stumbles, is crucial for a well-rounded appreciation of academic development. This study there examined the quantum leaps to stumbles by unveiling the journey of academic inquiry of library and information science researchers in Africa. A qualitative method was used with data collected from 20 LIS researchers from Africa through an open ended survey. The results reveal that beyond the realm of traditional success tales, the research sheds light on the varied experiences of LIS researchers in Africa. The study promotes inclusivity and enhances the global conversation on LIS research by recognizing the successes and failures of academic inquiry in the African setting
Addressing Teen Mental Health Needs at Individual and Community Levels
No full textThe study explored how to support teen resilience by examining the experiences of adolescents in the U.S. and Ukraine. Semi-structured interviews with parents from the U.S. and Ukraine were used to investigate the emotional distress experienced by adolescents and the resilience strategies and resources they use. Ukrainian and U.S. caregivers’ reports share many similarities and demonstrate the importance of community institutions in supporting teens. Findings suggest that libraries can support adolescents by offering curated content and mental health assistance and by providing safe spaces (digital and physical) to obtain information and socialize with peers.

RésuméL\u27étude s\u27est penchée sur la manière de soutenir la résilience chez les jeunes en examinant les expériences des adolescents aux États-Unis et en Ukraine. Des entretiens semi-structurés avec des parents américains et ukrainiens ont permis d\u27étudier la détresse émotionnelle des adolescents ainsi que les stratégies de résilience et les ressources qu\u27ils utilisent. Les rapports des parents ukrainiens et américains présentent de nombreuses similarités et démontrent l\u27importance des institutions communautaires dans le soutien aux adolescents. Les résultats suggèrent que les bibliothèques peuvent soutenir les adolescents en proposant des contenus adaptés et une assistance en matière de santé mentale et en offrant des espaces sûrs (virtuels et physiques) pour obtenir des informations et socialiser avec des pairs.
"Policies and Training Empowers Staff and Management to Act": Preliminary findings from the Patron-Perpetrated Sexual Harassment (PPSH) Policies and Procedures Survey
No full textLibrary workers across Canada view library policy, training, and reporting as important interventions to prevent and address patron-perpetrated sexual harassment (PPSH). A nation-wide survey indicates that Canadian public libraries vary widely in their development and usage of PPSH policies, procedures, and training. While 40% of libraries surveyed have PPSH policies, 78% have patron codes of conduct and 74% have policies that address workplace violence, harassment & discrimination. Only 26% of participating libraries offer staff PPSH specific training. Of the 69% of participating libraries who had formal incident reporting processes, only 13% list sexual harassment as a reporting option. More positively, findings demonstrate a strong interest by participants to address PPSH in their workplaces.

RésuméLes employés de bibliothèque à travers le Canada voient les politiques de la bibliothèque, la formation et le signalement comme des interventions importantes pour prévenir et résourdre le harcèlement sexuel perpétré par les usagers (HSPU). Un sondage national indique que les bibliothèques publiques canadiennes varient beaucoup par rapport à leur développement et leur usage de politiques, de procédures et de formation HSPU. Bien que 40% des bibliothèques sondées ont des politiques HSPU, 78% ont des codes de conduite pour les usagers et 74% ont des politiques sur la violence au travail, le harcèlement et la discrimination. Seulement 26% des bibliothèques participantes offrent des formations spécifiques au HSPU. Du 69% des bibliothèques participantes qui ont un processus de signalement d\u27incident, seulement 13% comportent le harcèlement sexuel comme option lors du signalement. Sur une note plus positive, les résultats montrent un grand intérêt des participants à résoudre le HSPU dans leur milieu de travail.
