高校教育の題材としての孤児院ボランティアツアーの可能性
Get PDFAs volunteer tourism has spread among young people around the world in recent years, orphanage volunteer tours have been its particularly popular example. The volunteer tourism is pointed out as having the potential for high educational benefits, but the orphanage volunteer tours have been criticized from a variety of perspectives. This paper provides the basic features of the volunteer tourism and orphanage volunteer tours as well as the main criticisms of these tours such as tourists’ selfish motives. It is clarified the orphanage volunteer tours are available as online ones and in the name of training in today’s Japan. From the writings of Japanese high school students who participated in the orphanage tours, it can be seen that they have learnt various things and have begun to think deeply about their own future and career paths. In this respect, the orphanage volunteer tours appear to have the expected educational effects. However, it is only the personal usefulness for the high school students that is placed at the center of the tour, and not altruism, one of the principles of volunteering. In this respect, the orphanage volunteer tours are contrary to the goals of civic education in today’s high school education.journal articl
