A Study on the Changing Perceptions of Barzaz-Breiz : Position of Folksongs in France from the Late Eighteenth Century to the Nineteenth Century
application/pdfThéodore-Claude-Henri Hersart de La Villemarqué published Barzaz-Breiz. Chants populaires de la Bretagne in 1839. Since Romanticism was in the mainstream of the French literary world at that time, this collection was immediately received with enthusiasm and highly regarded as a literary work.
The process of collecting folktales and ballads gave birth to a new subject of scientific research: “folklore”. In such circumstances, the“controversy of Barzaz-Breiz” occurred over the authenticity of the folksongs collected and edited by La Villemarqué. As a result, within less than 30 years his collection was no longer spoken of in the French literary world. Looking at the progression of this controversy from today's perspective, one mysterious phenomenon is evident: there has been no attempt to discuss literary aspects of this work from the eruption of the “controversy of Barzaz-Breiz” to the present.
The purpose of this paper is to elucidate, by considering French literary trends from the late eighteenth century to the nineteenth century, the issue of “the controversy of Barzaz-Breiz” and the change in perception of the work from literature to folklore, the position of folksongs in the French literary world, and the literary meaning of Barzaz-Breiz at that time.本論文は、平成27年度~29年度科学研究費助成金(基盤研究(C))「フランスにおける再話文学の系譜―『バルザス=ブレイス』を中心として」(課題番号15K02383)の研究成果の一部である。journal articl
