Get PDFapplication/pdfThis paper describes a restructuring of the educational evaluation system and its functional transformation in Germany. The secondary school system in Germany has traditionally consisted of three school forms (Hauptschule until 9th grade, Realschule until 10th grade, and Gymnasium until 12th or 13th grade), which have been understood as a three-tier system. This traditional school system has recently been reorganized into a two-tier system, which consists of the traditional Gymnasium and the other secondary schools (i.e., Oberschule, Stadtteilschule, Gesamtschule, Gemeinschaftsschule etc.). The educational evaluation system apparently still remains as a three-tier system because it lets the students get three different traditional certificates depending on the school graduation periods (Berufsreife, Mittlere Reife and Hochschulreife). The Berufsreife certifies the fulfillment of compulsory education, while the Mittlere Reife leads to skilled worker careers. The Hochschulreife allows students to proceed to get academic degrees at university. With the reform of the secondary education system, however, the evaluation system has been restructured to expand the connection routes within the secondary school forms, which allow students to pursue the university entrance certification (Hochschulreife).
