    No full text
In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Chemical EngineeringWaste expanded polystyrene is one of the significant contributors to global waste. Its disposal has been a problem due to its low density causing too much space take up in landfills. The utilization of waste-expanded polystyrene as a mask filter through electrospinning process is done in this study. It is annealed and coated with chitosan to improve mechanical strength and bacterial filtration efficiency. The annealed fiber mat has an average fiber diameter of 2.80±1.24 μm while the annealed and coated fiber averaged 3.52±1.87 μm. The bacterial filtration efficiency test shows 99.84±0.22% efficiency for the coated filter and 64.58±8.84% efficiency for the non- coated filter. The results imply that incorporatingchitosan significantly improved the filtration efficiency of the filter. Moreover, the addition of chitosan increased the ultimate tensile strength from 0.72±0.08 MPa to 9.86±1.24 MPa and turned the hydrophobic EPS microfiber (89.83±1.48° contact angle) to a hydrophilic microfiber (51.61±4.47° contact angle). On the other hand, there is no significant difference in the differential pressure between the coated (5.40±0.17 mm H2O per cm2) and non-coated (5.58±1.54 mm H2O per cm2) mask filter. Adding chitosan does not increase the pressure drop across the filter. Lastly, the produced chitosan-coated waste-expanded polystyrene mask filter qualifies for ASTM Level 3 for medical and surgical masks in terms of bacterial filtration efficiency and differential pressure. Thus, the electrospun EPS microfiber mask filter can potentially be applied to standard surgical masks while presenting a simple and environmentally friendly waste EPS upcycling

A study on welfare and productivity of laying chickens through free-range poultry farming and integrating agricultural tourism

    No full text
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in ArchitectureThe poultry/egg-laying industry in the Philippines is constantly growing as the years go on. As a result, consumers began to question the poultry products they were consuming, what type of environment the chickens were in, what type of housing the chicken had been housed in, and the welfare of the chickens. Nowadays, producers are confronted with demands to improve the welfare of the chickens and produce quality products. Chicken welfare is a major concern in poultry/egg production because if the welfare of the chickens is low, it will affect the production of the chickens. Chicken welfare can consider disease prevention, management, good shelter, and humane handling & slaughtering. Poultry farms have different poultry housing; battery-cage is the most common type of housing used in the Philippines, followed by free-range and cage-free housing. Because of the limited space, chickens housed in battery cages have a limited space to express their natural behaviors, unlike free-range and cage-free housings. Later in the following chapters, the chickens' natural behavior and the different problems they encounter inside their poultry housing and transfiguring a poultry house that enhances animal welfare from a study into the planning approach will be discussed

    No full text
In the Philippines, the genus, and the majority of the Pachyrhynchus group are still poorly investigated, facing various threats such as loss of forest habitats, climate change, poaching, and habitat alteration. As a way of searching for the key strategy for conserving the selected Pachyrynchus Germar 1824 species, specifically the Pachyrhynchus miltoni and Pachyrhynchus pseudamabilis, the researchers aimed to conduct an entomological assessment using the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria on the threatened taxa Red List, including the species’ status, habitat situation, ecological threats and conservation implementation needed. The specimens used in the study were obtained through purposive field sampling using the Visual Encounter Method (VES) and transect walks. VES and the transect walk method were used in the study collecting seven species of Pachyrhynchus pseudamabilis and three species of Pachyrhynchus miltoni. Pachyrhynchus miltoni is assessed as endangered according to B1ab(i, ii, iii, iv,v), the population being very small or restricted in terms of population size while Pachyrhynchus pseudamabilis is assessed as vulnerable under criterion B1ab(i, ii, iii, iv,v) as its global population was observed to not more than 10 locations and remains endemic on Mindanao Island. The results of the study suggested that Pachyrhynchus may be threatened by the slash-and- burn agriculture used by locals in the area. Pachyrhynchus is not now the focus of any conservation efforts. To maintain the forest life in Barangay Carmen, which is quickly becoming to be a popular tourist destination in the area, locals and the government agency has to collaborate and continue to enforce Mt. Karilongan policies enforced by the Obu-Manuvu community
