Low-density polyethylene and corncob ash as partial replacement of cement and sand in concrete paver blocks
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringAs of 2021, the Philippines ranked first in releasing most plastic into the ocean with 73,039 tons of plastic. Waste from farm sectors is considered in this study like corn waste. The use of polyethylene and corncob ash as an additional aggregate for paver blocks is not very common in the Philippines. This study aims to compare the compressive strength of the commercially produced paver blocks in the Philippines with blocks that are partially replaced with 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% volume replacement of cement by corncob ash and 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% volume replacement of sand by polyethylene. Furthermore, the cost of each partially replaced blocks compared to the commercially produced blocks is also analyzed. The LDPE used were collected and undergone grinding before it was sieved while CCA was collected and sieved. After collecting the materials needed, the process of making sample cement mixtures was performed and then tested for compressive strength, water absorption, cost analysis. According to the experimental result, the compressive strength of the experimented mixtures is on par with standard strength of cement mixture. Their utilization in the paver blocks reduces overall cost, mitigates on the technical and environmental nuisance. Polyethylene and corncob ash are suitable materials for use as a partial replacement for cement and sand, accordingly, as it satisfied the requirement
Smart helmet tracker using an indoor positioning system accompanied with health monitoring system
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in
Electronics EngineeringA smart helmet uses technology to analyze the user's health, the environment
around them, and the status of their equipment. Since the Global Positioning System
(GPS) has no visual contact with the GPS satellites inside a building, users of Safety
Smart Helmet (SSH) inside buildings will act as interpreters to distinguish positions
using Wi-Fi-based micro-controllers. The researchers implemented a Wireless Sensor
Network (WSN) and an indoor positioning system (IPS) to accomplish this. To ensure
their safety, access information about their status and conditions and floor-level
positions that can be monitored in real-time. The Blynk IoT Platform facilitates various
functions, including storage, compilation, notification sending, and provision of
relevant addresses and data streams on displayed widgets. The smart helmet's overall
weight was also considered to minimize user discomfort because it is headgear. The
IoT Platform-based WSN conducted a one-sample t-test to quantify amounts. The
results showed a t-test value and p-value of -0.409 and 0.685 for pulse, -1.101 and
0.280 for temperature, 0.514 and 0.611 for dust detection. Thus, the researchers were
able to develop a helmet capable of transmitting reliable data about the floor level
location as well as the current condition of the workers
Fire-resistant coating for wood construction materials using ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether epoxy resin cured with cashew nutshell liquid
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringMotivated to improve the fire-resistance capacity of wood construction materials using sustainable materials, fire-resistant coating based on the formulation of ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) and cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL) as a curing agent was implemented without thermal resistance additives. The coating formulations were first characterized for their chemical structure via Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) and their thermal properties by thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). A 2.83 difference at 800 ˚C was observed from the wt% residue of the coated and uncoated wood. The fireproofing performance of the coating was assessed over four types of wood species (gmelina, mahogany, moss, and pine) by UL94 vertical burning test and ASTM E119 furnace test. It was found that applying the coatings has significantly improved wood protection against fire. Besides, the coating performed better on gmelina wood than mahogany, moss, and pine wood

Calabash fruit (Crescentia cujete linn) as an inhibitor for algal growth
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Chemical EngineeringThe Crescentia genus has received relatively little attention in terms of research, with only a limited number of species within the genus being studied and has garnered a reputation as a traditional medicinal agent used for the treatment of a multitude of health conditions. While Calabash Fruit may possess growth-inhibitory properties, its effectiveness as a growth inhibitor has not been extensively studied in the scientific literature, leaving the full extent of its potential in this regard remains uncertain. The extracts of different concentration of methanol solvent was used to determine its inhibition properties through Kirby-Bauer Test and chlorophyll content indications on algae growth using spectrophotometer. The Kirby-Bauer Test showed that Calabash Seed extracts had an inhibitory effect, indicated by discoloration on the agar medium, but without distinct
zone of inhibition. On Spectrophotometry, The Chlorophyll a concentration on the samples representing the control group has the highest mean weight (σ = 10.779 μg/ml), and the lowest mean weight was the algae sample tested with the Calabash seed treated with 100% methanol concentration (σ = 2.3322 μg/ml). This study endorses that the Calabash fruit seeds extracted using methanol as the solvent has a discernible effect on algal growth
