    way to a sustainable banana crate

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringFor years, Mindanao has been the largest source of bananas throughout the country. Aside from that, we supply more than 90% of bananas, and tons of our supplies are also exported. The demand for bananas is increasing, but the material for storing and transporting them is deteriorating. Hence, alternatives to this product are called for. Furthermore, this study aims to examine the banana pseudo-stem fiber slab properties in different ratios. It seeks to determine an adequate proportion of banana fiber mixed with the epoxy mixture at the ratio of 1:1, 1:1.25, and 1:1.5, respectively, and to compare its cost and properties to the traditional wood crates. This study will design and assess the properties of traditional wood crates and banana fiber slabs reinforced with epoxy composites in different ratios. Universal Testing Machine assessed the samples' tensile and compressive strengths. The result of the study found that among the three proportions, the ratio of 1:1.5 shows the best performance. Moreover, the designed crate is 175% more expensive than the traditional crate; however lighter, has a higher storing capacity, and has a longer period of fire resistivity. These results indicate that the ratio of 1:1.5 banana fiber slab-reinforced epoxy composites is a potential alternative to traditional wood crates

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringThis research is for the efficient design of a water distribution system to tackle the insufficient water supply in Barangay Ugpaan, Boston, Davao Oriental. Through the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Philippine government created the “SALINTUBIG” Program, also known as the Sagana at Ligtas na Tubig sa Lahat, to provide adequate water to every Filipino community that struggles with water scarcity. This research design study was made to bridge the successful implementation of the program by carefully designing the water distribution system based on the profile data and water demand of Barangay Ugpaan. The primary intention of this research is to aid the community by providing a complete set of plans for the reservoir, including its pipeline distribution. Various software applications like AutoCAD, EPANET & Microsoft Offices were used. EPANET was used in designing and hydraulic analysis. Design output is presented to the DILG and the Local Government Units (LGU). The output of this research is a Detailed Engineering Design (DED) of a level II water distribution system

    Influence of activated charcoal in the enhancement of adsorbency of air pollutants emitted by vehicle exhausts in asphalt concrete

    Vehicle emissions are the pollutants produced by a car engine during the combustion process, which include nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and other air pollutants that are damaging to the environment and human health, particularly in urban areas. Since activated charcoal was proven effective in increasing the adsorption of harmful pollutants when mixed with concrete cement, this research aims to investigate if it has any effect on adsorbing other air pollutants when combined with asphalt concrete. For this study, the students made a prototype sealed chamber laid with a strip of asphalt concrete mixed with activated charcoal. The specimens were subjected to smoke emission tests to measure the air pollutants level, such as carbon monoxide. The researchers obtained the standard properties, compressive strength of asphalt concrete mixed with activated charcoal, and the reduction level of carbon monoxide when exposed to modified asphalt concrete. The result shows that adding activated charcoal to asphalt concrete would significantly enhance its absorbency in air pollutants such as carbon monoxide. This could be a potential way to combat or aid in lowering the number of harmful air pollutants caused by vehicle exhaust

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in ArchitectureA degradation in the area's value as a travel destination and losses in social significance could severely impact the local economy over the long run if the quality of the coastal infrastructure deteriorates. Poor design can drastically impair a building's functionality and, in some cases, can significantly limit its usable lifespan. Participant and perception surveys have become widely used to evaluate the quality of beaches for recreational reasons. It is vital to comprehend how the general public views and responds to effectively identify the areas of concern. Although people may have a variety of different and inconsistent points of view, it may be challenging to evaluate user perspectives in this case. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the relationship between the design quality and users' perspective of the coastal establishments in barangay Matina Aplaya, Davao City. This study used a quantitative approach to collect the necessary measurable data and information for this evaluation. It would utilize a correlational research design to evaluate the relationship between the two variables: the establishment's design quality and user perspective. The researcher would randomly select a subset of participants using simple random sampling. Spearman rank correlation revealed a significant correlation between the two variables. The result shows a positive relationship, rejecting the null hypothesis of no significant relationship. Therefore, the coastal establishments in barangay Matina Aplaya, Davao City, will still need an improvement in the design quality of their facilities to have a much better outcome on the hospitality industry and impact not just people but also the environment

    Effects of kapok fiber and bamboo leaves ash as soil stabilizer for expansive soil in road application

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringClayey soils pose a risk and damage to life and property and are unsuitable for direct engineering application due to their shrink-swell behavior. Pavement cracks and swells are some effects due to soil excessive distress under volumetric changes of its underlying soil. With this, researchers explore different methods to stabilize expansive soils using fibers and cementitious materials. This paper used Kapok Fiber (KF) and Bamboo Leaves Ash (BLA) as soil stabilizers. It seeks to determine the soil classification, test its effects on compaction, investigate the swelling of the soil and change of consistency. Varying concentrations are 0.5% KF and 6%BLA, 0.8% KF and 6%BLA, and 1% KF and 6%BLA by weight of the soil. Test samples undergo sieve analysis, Atterberg limit, compaction, and swell index test. Results revealed that adding fibers to the soil matrix increases maximum dry density (MDD) while optimum moisture content (OMC) varies indirectly. In addition, soil swelling decreases after adding KF and BLA with an optimum design mix of 0.5% KF and 6%BLA. T-test showed that swell index under 10, 30, and 65 blows significantly differ between the control and the optimum ratio. Furthermore, the consistency of the soil changes from highly plastic to low plasticity. Therefore, KF and BLA are good sources of soil stabilizers for pavement subgrade purposes

Water is a crucial resource that serves as food, drink, and fuel. Without a water supply system, having clean, healthy drinking water would not be possible. Hence, this study endeavors to design a level III water distribution system in Sitio Taupan, Barangay Salaysay, Marilog District, Davao City. The Philippine Eagle Foundation sought a collaboration with the University of Mindanao – College of Engineering Education to provide a sufficient and sustainable water system to the people and community of Barangay Salaysay. Thus, this study intends to gather necessary data and develop a schematic plan by presenting a detailed engineering design (DED) with EPANET 2.0, MyTracks, Google Earth Pro, AutoCAD 2019, and STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition V22, RCDC CONNECT V11, and Excel programs. By collecting data through demographic profiling, elevation profiling, water source profiling, conducting hydraulic analysis, and using the aforementioned software for the standards in Rural Water Supply Manual and National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) 2015, it was proved to be feasible to sustain water supply to its beneficiaries.     In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringNatural disasters are all expected to worsen and happen more frequently because of global warming. Cities containing a large portion of the human population were particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Creating future climate projections can lessen the impact of these adverse occurrences. In this study, rainfall and temperature projections from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) were used to predict the future climate data of Tagum City. To project precipitation and temperature from 2020 up to 2100, an ensemble of 31 Global Climate Models (GCMs) under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5) were utilized. The ACCESS-CM2 model corresponded satisfactorily with the PAGASA weather station's observed rainfall dataset. The resulting flood risk map shows that, in the current scenario, 7.1% of the city’s land area belongs to the ‘very low’ flood risk category, 22.3% belongs to the ‘low’ category, 22% belong to the ‘medium’ category, 37.5% belong to the ‘high’ category, and 11.1% belong to the ‘very high’ category. It also shows that 13 of the 23 barangays belong to the ‘high’ and ‘very high’ flood risk categories for current and future scenarios. These barangays would be the ones to require the most immediate attention from decision-makers to develop strategies for future occurrences of flood within the city of Tagum

Despite the technology's advantages to the public, it also has an underlying adverse impact on the employees. The study aims to determine the significant relationship between the effects of technological advancement and employee retention of Sangguniang Panlungsod in Davao City. The study used a descriptive correlation research design and simple random sampling of one hundred employees of Sangguniang Panlungsod in Davao City. Also, an adopted questionnaire was used, and the results were treated statistically using mean, standard deviation, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, and linear regression. Furthermore, the study revealed a very high level of the effect of technological advancement and employee retention of Sangguniang Panlungsod in Davao City. Thus, technological advancement significantly influences employee retention of Sangguniang Panlungsod in Davao City. Organizations will greatly benefit to technological advancement by helping to shape its strategic vision as well as helping it to gain a competitive edge including employee retention. Government services should upgrade software versions to provide faster transactions. Organizations should prioritize keeping the staff up to date on the current trends in terms of establishing insightful employee training sessions to strengthen employee retention

    Utilization of durian skin fiber in producing heat resistant board insulator

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringDurio Zibethinus Murray, also known as Durian, is a popular fruit in Southeast Asia, primarily grown in tropical countries such as the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. This thesis aims to explore the potential of using durian husks as a thermal insulator and develop heat-resistant board insulators with Durian Skin Fiber. The study compares the temperature variations inside a scaled box with different insulators under environmental conditions. It evaluates the Durian Husk Insulator (DHI) and Polyethylene Foam Insulator (PE) resistance to heat. The objective is to promote organic materials as an alternative to the commonly used foam insulator and reduce durian waste. The durian husks are crushed, mixed with a binding agent, and placed in a scaled room with a hygrothermograph to measure the temperature filtered by the DHI. This research is critical in the current climate change scenario, and the study findings would encourage using durian waste to produce sustainable and effective heat-resistant board insulators. Throughout the tests, they found that the Durian Husk performed more effectively as an insulator than PE Foam Insulators. The Durian Husk Insulator consistently provided the best performance and has the potential to be a more cost-effective and sustainable substitute for PE Foam Insulator

    GIS-based disaster and hazard preparedness index model in Mabini, Davao De Oro

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringWith the increasing occurrence of natural disasters across the globe, highly susceptible areas like the Municipality of Mabini, Davao de Oro, require proper disaster preparation and awareness. This study aimed to generate an informative hazard map to help the local authorities and the designated MDRRMO identify and support Mabini's most vulnerable areas to commonly occurring natural disasters. In connection, this research assessed the level of disaster preparedness of the 11 Local Government Units in the said municipality that had generated an index, which was the basis for creating the informative hazard map using the Geographic Information System. The quantitative Descriptive Method was utilized. Data were collected using Disaster Preparedness Checklist and Community Evacuation Checklist, all adopted from MDRRMO. Quantitative data analysis was performed using the Likert scale as a statistical tool for the Disaster Preparedness Checklist and interpreted the Community Evacuation Checklist by getting its Mean Average Percentage. The findings of this study reveal that the overall level of Disaster Preparedness in Mabini is at a Somewhat Preparedness level, where the LGU has made efforts in disaster preparedness but needs more improvement and support in programs and advocacies, which is vital in community awareness. This study concludes that generating the disaster and hazard preparedness index maps of the Municipality of Mabini using the GIS software is necessary for improving their disaster preparedness interventions. Finally, this study recommended that the LGU-Mabini utilize the map to inclusively alleviate their disaster preparedness, especially prioritizing the least prepared barangays
