    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in CriminologyThis paper examines the public concern on environmental injustices and the effects of solid waste disposal and air pollution on ecological preservation in selected Barangay of Davao City. A simple random sampling method was used to distribute the questionnaire to the respondents, and the researchers also surveyed an intended number of respondents. There are four hundred (400) respondents to this study, and the respondents are from Barangay Buhangin, Matina Aplaya, and Tugbok, of Davao City. This study revealed that residents in general have good concerns in a healthy and clean environment. Citizens should learn and practice how to maintain solid waste management to lessen air pollution and achieve a healthy environment. One method of managing solid waste is called "segregation of source," which entails sorting trash at the point of generation. This study aims to have an idea of how three selected barangays are concerned about their environment and to assess the level of environmental injustices in Davao City. This issue has significant environmental and health impacts on communities, as improperly disposed waste can contaminate air, water, and soil, leading to diseases, pollution, and other environmental problems

    The study of the effects of using ceramic waste as eco-friendly alternative for fine aggregates in plastering CHB wall

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringThe rapidly growing population has increased construction, repair, and remodeling activity, which has resulted in considerable construction material waste. One problem contributor that might lead to land pollution is the disposal of broken ceramics. On the other hand, natural resources used in building, such as fine aggregates, are depleting to meet future demand. Related studies did not provide the actual implementation of their research findings. As such, the focus of the researchers is on the partial substitution of ceramic waste as fine aggregate in the plastering of CHB walls. The replacement comprises 0%, 20%, and 30% of the mixture. A series of tests were conducted, such as the slump cone test (per ASTM C143), compressive strength test, and split tensile strength test. As the study progresses, the 20% combination produces inconsequential results for compressive and split tensile strength tests. Internal (8mm thickness) and external (16mm thickness) plasters were made in single coats only on the 12.356 square meter wall area using the prevailing 20% mixture. The results show that a 20% pulverized ceramic waste substitute for fine aggregates in plastering CHB walls is feasible

    Activated bioadsorbent using longkong langsat (lansium domesticum) peels for the removal of bromothymol dyes

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Chemical EngineeringIn this study, the researchers utilized the efficiency of activated longkong langsat peels to remove the Bromothymol Blue (BTB) dye solution. Pyrolyzed longkong langsat peels, functionalized with sodium hydroxide, were developed to eliminate bromothymol blue (BTB) dye from a concentrated solution. The adsorbent's performance was determined by studying the effects of dosage, pH, concentration, temperature, contact time, and recyclability. The surface morphology and composition in terms of its functional groups, as analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), were employed to characterize the adsorbent. Kinetic analyses were carried out applying pseudo-first and second-order models, along with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption results determined that activated longkong langsat can be used as an adsorbent for removing bromothymol dyes. The experiment's equilibrium data reached an adsorption capacity of 81.07% BTB. For the isotherm study, the Langmuir isotherm model was the closest match to the adsorption results of longkong langsat peels. In addition, the pseudo-second-order model had the best fit for predicting adsorption kinetics

    Petroleum ash as concrete compressive strength enhancer

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringThe environment is adversely affected by a huge volume of petroleum waste. It's one of the most common wastes from oil refineries, transportation, and production. The use of petroleum waste converted to ash as a compressive strength enhancer in concrete would provide an environmental and economic benefit. The study investigates the effect of petroleum ash as an additive in obtaining a certain level of compressive strength in concrete. A total of 15 samples of conventional concrete and 15 samples of concrete with petroleum ash (PA) were prepared using mix M15 with a ratio of 1:2:4. Fresh mixtures were slump tested to measure their workability before being formed into cubes. Every 5 samples of conventional concrete and 5 samples of concrete with PA were given a 7- day, 14-day, and 28-day curing period, respectively. The compressive strengths of each of the 15 samples of conventional concrete and the 15 samples of concrete with PA were determined after curing. The findings of the experiment show that adding PA to concrete has a significant difference in its compressive strength at ages 7, 14, and 28 days and changes its morphology. The workability of both concrete mixes has a minimal difference when 1.5% PA was added. Calcium Silicate Hydrate (CSH) gel being formed improves the concrete’s compressive strength, which is seen in the morphology of the concrete containing PA

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringMatina Pangi is a barangay part of Talomo 1st District, Davao City, known to suffer several flooding disasters. This study works on the flood risk simulation along the Matina Pangi River. It generates a flood hazard map using ArcGIS and HEC-RAS software to propose an evacuation strategy. ArcGIS software generated a flood susceptibility map (FSM), and HECRAS simulation software was used to visualize the river overflow along Matina Pangi. The research specifies only the locality of Matina Pangi km.5 up to km.8, Davao City. Digital elevation model (DEM) and rainfall data obtained from government agencies were processed in ArcGIS to generate maps such as elevation, rainfall, watershed delineation, Distance to the road, Distance to the river, Slope, and land use and land cover (LULC). These maps are processed again in ArcGIS to generate an FSM. Researchers used this map as an input in HEC-RAS for flood simulation and analysis of river overflow. The researchers use the generated FSM and the river's overflow analysis as a basis for proposing the evacuation site, evacuation route, and safety evacuation procedure

    In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Financial ManagementThe purpose of this research is to better understand how young professionals in Davao City are using their money and what the effects of their financial literacy on their savings behavior. Knowing how to manage one's finances is a strong indicator of one's ability to save. Considering how this study provides insight on the financial literacy of young professionals, the researchers assume it will be of significant use to students. Encourage young people to use what they learn about budgeting, saving, and investing in the real world through partnering with financial institutions. Moreover, the government may suggest that young professionals create a savings plan and stick to a program to develop savings and have an emergency fund in case of unforeseen events. Future researchers may gain insight into how improving their financial literacy affected their own situation. They might use this information in their on-going research and development. In addition, we need to know if today's young professionals are financially literate and have saving behaviors. The study used a descriptive survey, and the respondents were all young professionals from Davao City. Additionally, a Google Form questionnaire was used to collect information for the study. They were chosen as respondents so that we could evaluate the effect of financial literacy on respondents' saving behaviors. The problem was solved using the statistical techniques of frequency and percentage. This was used to determine the number of respondents in each profile category. The mean and Spearman’s rho were used to determine the influence. Correlation was utilized to determine the strength of the relationship between financial literacy and saving behavior. This research discusses the nature of this relationship by putting out a suitable conceptual and theoretical framework, and it finds that financial literacy may have a relationship effect on saving behavior in young professionals

    Exigent challenge: the negative speaking experiences of SHS students in UM Peñaplata college

    This qualitative-phenomenological study envisioned understanding learners’ negative experiences in speaking English inside the classroom at UM Peñaplata College, Island Garden City of Samal. This research is anchored through the study of Pabro-Maquidato (2021), which emphasized that learners experience emotional tensions, physiological symptoms, and mental difficulties when they speak English. Eight Grade 11 and 12 Senior High School participants in this study were involved in an In-depth Interview (IDI). Participants’ negative experiences revealed six themes; inferiority complex, apprehension, indulging voluntary and involuntary movement, classroom distractions, difficulty in expressing thoughts, and teacher reproaches. From their coping mechanisms, seven themes emerged; diverting one’s attention, breathing techniques, composing oneself, crying behind closed doors, eating, cursing, and talking to trusted friends. Their insights exhibited four themes; lowers confidence level, induces motivation to strive more, furnishes avenues to gain lessons, and engenders disappointments and discouragements. Results suggested that for learners to overcome their negative speaking experiences, teachers’ primary role is to create an environment that is student-friendly and convenient for them to speak their thoughts

    Effect of jackfruit starch as concrete admixture

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringThis research paper focuses on finding an environmentally friendly, cost-effective admixture that is also easily and abundantly available in the country. Admixtures are known for being the modifiers of the properties of concrete that can alter the results depending on the mix proportions. Starch admixture is a retarding admixture. This study examines the properties of concrete, such as compressive strength, workability, and time setting, by adding jackfruit seed starch by weight of cement at 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%. Concrete's workability was tested through the slump test method before casting fifteen samples 8" long with 4" in diameter of concrete cylinders in every concrete mix batch. The compressive strength test was performed after 28 curing days. Vicat apparatus was also used to determine each percentage's initial and final setting time. The results showed that the workability of concrete decreases as the percentage of admixture increases due to the starch's ability to thicken solutions. The results also showed that the 2% admixture obtained the highest mean compressive strength amongst all mixes, and at 2%, admixture started to decrease in compressive strength as the admixture increased. The time setting of cement is increasing with respect to every addition of the jackfruit starch. And in conclusion, the 2% admixture is the most effective among all concentrations due to being the smallest amount of admixture needed to have the highest concrete compressive strength and second highest for being a workable concrete that still has a great amount of time before the concrete will initially set

    Influence of financial literacy on profitability of micro-enterprises in Babak Samal Island

    Understanding financial literacy concepts and recognizing financial instruments is essential for an individual's all financial decisions. The study assess the relationship between financial literacy and profitability of those micro-enterprises in Babak District, Island Garden City of Samal. In conducting this research, a descriptive survey method was employed. The study population was the micro-enterprises operating in the Babak district of Samal. From a total population, a sample of 50 respondents was selected using the random sampling method. The statistical tools used in the study were mean, Pearson-r, and regression analysis. The result showed that financial literacy on the profitability of Micro-enterprises is high. Moreover, the micro-enterprises budgeting, planning, debt management, and savings were very high. The level of profitability in terms of income is low, and asset is very high. Therefore, the study highly recommends that micro-enterprises be made aware of the significance of financial literacy and encouraged to participate in financial literacy. The study found that high levels of financial literacy among micro-enterprises owners led to higher financial performance

    Level III design proposal for local potable water distribution facility in Poblacion, Nabunturan

    In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringWater is an essential fundamental element needed in living. The residents can use it in agriculture, infrastructure, and daily needs such as water consumption, food, hygiene, etc. Making water management a necessity to help improve our country's economic development. Thus, with the growing population, the demand for water supplies increases. With this idea in mind, the Department of Interior and Local Government Regional Office XI (DILG XI) tapped the academe like the University of Mindanao to fast-track the flow of projects on Sagana at Ligtas na Tubig Para sa Lahat (SaLinTubig) for the year 2020. This study aimed to provide rural communities in Poblacion, Nabunturan a safe, reliable, and convenient source of drinking water. The proponents of this research achieved this by utilizing the Simplified Feasibility Study (SFS) conducted by the local prime professionals, followed by a site visitation activity to further attest to the surveyed data. Geo-tagging of proposed locations of distribution lines was identified and crafted. The proponents also verified the groundwater source and its type and used AutoCAD to plot the profile elevation for the initial water distribution system design. The proponents analyzed the initial plan to meet its hydraulic capacity (EPAnet) and structural integrity (STAAD Pro.) to ensure the parameters needed for a level three plan. The final design phase includes utilizing the analytic results, which produced the adequate combination of pipe fittings vital in the distribution line. The minimum dimensions of the water tank capable of supplying the projected population are detailed. Also, the plan provided individual service entrances or faucets for this design proposal to be considered a level three design. After crafting the final design, overall cost estimates are conducted and submitted to the local prime professionals for future budget allocation
