Luffa acutangula and Pithecellobium dulce in the production of composite cladding core panels using vinyl ester as coupling agent
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringNot all agricultural produce becomes useful in food consumption; most of these become wastes, which therefore causes direct economic loss to farmers. Natural fibers such as Luffa Acutangula (L.A.) and Pithecellobium Dulce (P.D.) can reinforce structural applications in the fiber-polymer composite. The physical and mechanical properties of PD+LA fibers reinforced with vinyl ester were examined at varying volume fractions to determine the optimal conditions. The study found that the natural fiber composite was optimized at a volume fraction of 25PD+5LA by weight. The optimized volume fraction of composite has an average density of 0.9527 g/cm3, a water absorption of 0.62%, a lowest average temperature of 37.51 °C, a modulus of elasticity of 4.20 GPa, an internal bond of 56.04 MPa, and flexural strength of 53.73 MPa. The results obtained in them optimized result were evaluated in comparison to ANSI (American National Standards Institute) specifications for basic service hardboard. Based on the findings, the optimum natural fiber composite showed significant potential for structural engineering materials applications
Financial behavior and well-being of rice farmers in Island Garden City of Samal
The study aimed to investigate the financial behavior and well-being of rice farmers in Island Garden City, Samal. The research design employed was quantitative descriptive correlational, utilizing statistical tools such as the mean and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Data collection involved distributing survey questionnaires to 122 rice producers in the mentioned area. The results indicated that the financial behavior of rice producers exhibited an average mean score, suggesting moderate manifestation of the measured variables. In addition, the fact that the items have an average mean score indicates that they are fairly evident. Additionally, there is a direct link between happiness and financial behavior. It is possible for rice farmers to uphold their excellent financial behavior, financial stability, and attainment of their financial goals in order to enhance their perceived well-being and financial behavior
Potential groundwater recharge zone map in Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS)
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringGroundwater is our major source of water. This study focuses on developing a groundwater recharge zone map using Geographic Information System (GIS) software techniques and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) model. The map incorporates various influencing thematic layers sourced from local government agencies and generated through simulations in ArcGIS software. The thematic layers are Land Use/Land Cover (LULC), Geology, Soil, Slope, Lineament, Drainage, and Rainfall. These thematic layers are validated using existing data and maps from the Island Garden City of Samal-City Planning and Development Office. In generating the recharge zone map, the thematic layers are overlaid using weighted overlay analysis, and the weights are determined using the AHP method, following Saaty's 1980 approach. After generating the groundwater recharge zone map, it is crucial to validate its accuracy and reliability. This validation process involves comparing the map with the locations of existing well and employing key informant interviews. By cross-referencing with existing wells, we can assess the map's alignment with existing groundwater resources. Additionally, key informant interviews provide valuable insights from residents and barangay officials, validating the map practically. This study provides an effective and reliable groundwater recharge zone map by combining GIS software techniques, AHP model, and rigorous validation methods. The groundwater recharge zone map shows the location of groundwater resource level of potentiality that can serve as a valuable tool for water resource management and groundwater source planning in the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS)
Peer influence on saving behavior of students in UM Peñaplata college
The study was conducted to determine the students' peer influence and saving behavior at UM Peñaplata College. The study was a quantitative descriptive-correlational design. The data were gathered using a survey questionnaire distributed to 89 students in UMPC. The weighted average mean and Pearson r were used to analyze the data. The study revealed no significant relationship between peer influence and saving behavior among college students. Contrary to popular belief, which suggested that peers played a crucial role in shaping financial decisions, this study found no statistically significant evidence to support such as relationship within the college students population. These findings imply that factors other than peer influence may substantially impact the saving behavior of college students at UM, such as personal financial goals, financial literacy, and individual attitudes toward saving
The lowering effect of rose apple (syzygium jambos) seed extract on the conversion of starch to glucose
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Chemical EngineeringConsuming refined carbohydrates is linked to Type 2 diabetes, as it leads to a surge in blood sugar levels that necessitates more insulin production by the body. Rose apple seed extract contains compounds found to have anti-diabetic properties, including jambosine, an alkaloid that slows down the process of converting starch into sugar. This study aims to investigate the effect of rose apple seed extract on the breakdown of starch. A 1% starch solution was treated with different concentrations of S. jambos extract while keeping the alpha-amylase enzyme constant to break down starch. The mixture was then examined in a spectrophotometer set to 590 nm. According to the photometric findings, the extract restricted the hydrolyzation of starch. The data collected indicated a significant difference between the extract concentrations used. Thus, the greater the quantity of S. jambos extracts applied, the more starch remained unhydrolyzed
Production of bio-briquettes from nanosized durio zibethinus (durian) peels and seed starch adhesive
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Chemical EngineeringBio-Briquettes as an alternative fuel source in charcoal briquettes were produced from agricultural waste Durio zibethinus (durian) peel using the seed as an adhesive. Nanonization of the durian peel and seed was applied as a modification in this study. Bio-briquette production was prepared at different experimental ratios and binder concentrations to determine the optimal conditions. The bio-briquette has varied nanostarch- to-water ratios of 1:8, 1:10, and 1:12, and binder concentrations of 65%, 75%, and 85% were tested for each ratio. Three trials were conducted per experimental ratio. The particle size distribution and surface morphology of nanosized durian peel and starch were analyzed through FE-SEM Imaging with EDS Mapping. Also, the physical and mechanical properties of bio-briquettes, such as bulk density and shatter index, were then investigated. Moreover, bio-briquette was characterized by the proximate analysis and caloric value. The result shows that the bio-briquette was optimized at a 1:10 nanostarch-to-water ratio and 75% binder concentration. It had a density of 543.37 kg/m3, a shatter index percentage of 95.97%, a calorific value of 29.42 MJ/kg, a moisture content of 6.65% by w/w, a volatile combustible matter of 33.7% by w/w, an ash content of 11% by w/w, and a fixed carbon of 55.3% by w/w. The values obtained were compared with Indonesian National Standards (SNI – 01 – 6235 – 2000), British Standards (BS 1016-108- 108.1:1992), and Japanese Standards for Briquette. Hence, based on the results, the bio-briquette made from nanosized durian peels and seeds as a binder has a strong potential to be an alternative source of biofuel
