    No full text
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in BiologyCockroaches are known to be associated with ectoparasites that cause food-borne diseases and allergies in food environments such as public markets. Ectoparasites are organisms that are attached to the external body surfaces of hosts. This present study aims to assess the presence of ectoparasites of cockroaches in the selected public markets of Davao City. Specifically, the study aims to identify common cockroach species and extracted cockroach-associated ectoparasites found in Matina and Bankerohan public market. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Findings of the study revealed the following: (a) the common species of cockroaches present in Bankerohan and Matina public market is Periplaneta americana; (b) there is no cockroach associated ectoparasites in Matina public market: (c) there is two cockroaches associated ectoparasites identified as Dermatophagoides spp (common name: house dust mites). This particular ectoparasites is a known causative agent of asthma and allergies among humans. It is recommended that the Department of Health (DOH) in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) and various Barangays in Davao City should collaborate with each other in conducting risk assessment regarding on the proliferation of cockroaches carrying ectoparasites. In addition, the conduct of information dissemination through forums and seminars regarding food hygiene and environmental sanitation practices among vendors and stall owners in Bankerohan and Matina public market is also highly recommended

    No full text
This research delved into the retirement preparedness of five (5) male PNP officers of the Island Garden City of Samal with 15-20 years of service. The study unveils the experiences, accrued challenges, and coping mechanism as they progress toward retirement. Researchers gathered the data through an in-depth face-to-face interview and used thematic analysis to analyze the data extracted from the responses. Four themes emerged to describe the experiences of near-retirement PNP officers: financial discipline, responsibilities, reasons to prepare for retirement, and mandatory and optional investment. Time constraint and indebtedness were the themes for challenges. While appointing a family member as manager, loan mitigation and regular repayment, and acquiring financial knowledge were the themes for coping mechanisms. Two themes emerged for their insights-observation from retired officers and retirement advice. This study confirmed the Life Cycle Theory, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Theory of Mental Accounting, proving that factors like wealth, income expectations, time until retirement, attitudes, beliefs and resource allocation affect the financial behavior and retirement plans of police officers; this confirms the relevance of these factors in understanding retirement preparedness among law enforcement professionals

Driving prosperity: multiple case study on the earning of public utility vehicle drivers in Island Garden City of Samal

    No full text
This study aims to understand the PUV drivers, Habal-habal, tricycles, and auto rickshaw in Babak District, as well as their earnings and numerous challenges and factors affecting their income in Babak District. The study utilized a qualitative research design using cross-case analysis with 3 informants' drivers' struggles. Multiple case study research is a qualitative methodology that allows researchers to contrast between individual cases, represent a diversity of qualities and extremes to create depth, and understand a broad phenomenon without losing the individuality of the single case studies (Baxter & Jack, 2008; Thomas, 2011). Despite these challenges, drivers demonstrate resilience in maintaining their income. Strategies such as standardization and adapting rules help them navigate these challenges effectively. Tricycle drivers face long working hours, high fuel costs, and passenger scarcity. Despite these, drivers maintain their earnings by considering the competition, accepting higher inflation, and being considerate to others, earning the habal-habal, tricycle, and auto-rickshaw drivers, including financial problems, long working hours, inflation, and competition. Auto-rickshaw drivers face similar challenges, including standardization, faith coping strategies, and inflation. They adapt to these by standardizing procedures, implementing rotation, and adjusting fares based on inflation rates and adversity. Despite these challenges, auto-rickshaw drivers have a good source of income due to lower operation costs and the potential for frequent trips. However, income depends on various circumstances and is not guaranteed to be a high earner

Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata), cogon (Imperata cylindrica), and polypropylene fibers as hybrid woven geotextile impregnated with polystyrene based organic solution

    No full text
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringThe widespread use of synthetic materials in production, such as geotextile, has contributed to environmental concerns and waste management by utilizing the advantages of natural fibers, including their inherent biodegradability, widespread availability, and other significant properties. This study made a hybrid woven geotextile from Snake Plant, Cogon grass, and Polypropylene fibers impregnated with polystyrene-based organic solution. Blended design ratios of 4: 15% cogon - 15% snake plant - 70% polypropylene, 20% cogon - 20% snake plant - 60% polypropylene, 25% cogon - 25% snake plant - 50% polypropylene for the hybrid, and 50% cogon – 50% snake plant for the natural one is the basis in determining the best ratio for the geotextile application. The geotextile degradation test, tensile strength, water absorbency, and water solubility tests were collected for the study. The tests show that the 20% cogon - 20% snake plant - 60% polypropylene design ratio has the best properties for the geotextile application observation. It has the highest natural fiber content with a high tensile strength and a decent result in the water solubility and absorbency test. The 30-day observation for the undisturbed non-treated slope and the slope applied with geotextile revealed that the accumulated soil displacement collected is 9kgs without the geotextile and 1.25kgs with geotextile. Thus, hybrid woven geotextile for slope protection can lessen washing out topsoil with environmentally friendly material and is biodegradable with an organic-based solution in balancing hydrophilic characteristics within a hydrophobic matrix, thereby enhancing overall performance

The researchers conducted studies to identify the challenges that HR managers encounter in handling multinational corporations. This research study aims to discover the challenges and experiences that HR managers' face in multinational corporations. Nine informants who are currently working as HR managers in two multinational corporations were interviewed and recorded to gather qualitative data. The data collected in this qualitative phenomenological study were based on the responses to three research questions. Results were grouped into themes. The study shows that HR managers face challenges in dealing with multinational companies, such as employee behavior, extensive work coverage, and cultural differences among the employees in the company. HR managers address those challenges by sharing their techniques and strategies, which include implementing training and development programs like psychosocial training, seminars, coaching, mentoring, etc., and through feedbacking to encourage employees to openly express concerns and to promptly give alternative actions or solutions to improve their work performance. However, despite the challenges that HR managers encountered, they still needed to stick to the policy of whatever changes there were in the company and step up for their people's welfare

    Get PDF
In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Science in Civil EngineeringThis study investigates the potential of Durian Rinds Fiber (DRF) and synthesized Self-Healing Material derived from Durian Rinds (SHM-DRF) as cement replacements to mitigate cracks and enhance the physical and mechanical properties of concrete, particularly in disaster-prone regions like the Philippines. Evaluating the impact of DRF and SHM-DRF at different replacement percentages (1%, 3%, and 5%), the research explores properties such as water absorption, density, and mechanical behavior through destructive and non-destructive tests. Utilizing SEM-EDX, TGA, BET, and visual observation, the study reveals significant improvements in mechanical, microstructural, thermal, and water absorption properties. DRF enhances tensile strength notably, reaching 275.36 MPa ± 52.70, while SHM-DRF contributes to CaCO3 formation crucial for sealing and healing concrete cracks. The findings suggest varying influences of replacement percentages on strength, with DSH1 displaying the highest compressive strength (31.75 MPa ± 2.52) and best self-healing efficiency. At the same time, DSH3 exhibits the highest flexural strength (4.53 MPa ± 0.28)
