RETHINKING DISADVANTAGED GROUPS FOR CREATING INCLUSIVE PUBLIC SPACE IN TAKSIM SQUARE
Taksim Square is a significant public space in Istanbul, Turkiye, with socio-cultural and historical importance. The square has been known as a platform for expressing political issues and socio-cultural demands. Also, it serves as a unifying hub that fosters social interaction for locals and tourists from different backgrounds. While tourists contribute to the economic activity in the areas concentrated with accommodations and shopping centres, Taksim Square holds a special place for the local community. It serves as a meeting point and holds indispensable value for various aspects of life, including business activities, museums, transportation connectivity, and the presence of nearby educational institutions. Moreover, as a prominent public space in Turkiye, Taksim Square attracts a diverse audience that includes disadvantaged groups such as ethnic minorities, migrants, people with disabilities, the elderly, and children. However, when considering the needs of disadvantaged groups, certain challenges become apparent. These challenges include a lack of green spaces, playgrounds, and facilities, as well as issues related to the organisation and landscape design of the area. Therefore, this research aims to revitalise Taksim Square through the implementation of urban acupuncture, proposing design solutions that cater to the diverse needs of its users. The research emphasises a comprehensive approach that prioritises the needs of disadvantaged groups and environmental considerations while fostering dynamism, security, and the creation of green spaces
REDEVELOPMENT OF BOAT TERMINAL AT KUALA TAHAN, PAHANG
Perahu is used significantly by the rural people living on the riverbanks of Malaysia as the main water transport, such as moving from one location to another, transferring foods and agricultural products, fishing and renting it for tourism purposes. However, the usage of perahu as a method of transportation is slowly diminishing. Nonetheless, water transportation service is still dominant for the villagers of Tembeling River, Pahang. The Tembeling River is necessary for the locals and tourists as the route to the remote villages at Hulu Tembeling and National Park, Kuala Tahan. However, deforestation causes damage to the river, which leads to three issues. They are environmental damage, unsustainable economy and loss of culture. Thus, this research aims to redevelop the existing boat terminal at Kuala Tahan, Pahang and enhance the potential ecotourism along the Tembeling River to help prevent excessive deforestation by showing the importance of preserving the nature of Tembeling River. The research aims to improve the existing facilities of the boat services, educate and create awareness of environmental preservation through ecotourism, and preserve the local culture through an architectural approach. The research applied qualitative methods, which consisted of observation and interviews. The secondary data consists of case studies and literature reviews. The findings from the research formulate a design brief to redevelop the existing boat terminal at Kuala Tahan. The proposed design will represent the place as a Gateway to Nature
RESTORING RIVER ECOLOGICAL VALUE AT SUNGAI PUSU GOMBAK SELANGOR
Rivers are among the most prevalent ecosystems that are either endangered, substantially degraded, in poor health, damaged, or heavily changed by human activity. Four main problems are occurring at the Pusu River: i) river pollution, ii) sedimentation, iii) flood risk, and iv) habitat loss. The study focuses on restoring river ecological value that was degraded due to human activities and development at the Pusu River in Gombak, Selangor. This study aims to develop a landscape masterplan for the Pusu River as a nature recreational activity park for the IIUM community while sustaining life on land, below water, well-being, and protecting life (al -'nafs). The objectives of this study are to restore the river ecosystem, create a nature preservation area, and provide a nature comprehensive design. This study used three methods to collect the data: i) document analysis, ii) site observation, and iii) survey questionnaire. These methods were chosen to analyse the site's current condition and propose design solutions to overcome the four main problems mentioned. The findings can be segmented into three main attributes: physical, natural, and social. The river hydrology observation indicates a very poor condition of the Pusu River, with sedimentation that causes the river to become shallow with murky water that reduces its aesthetic value. The output of the study encompasses the designing stage of proposing an eco-river park master plan and a detailed development plan that emphasises on restoring water quality, returning wildlife, and creating space for recreational activity
