LOW CARBON APPLICATION IN KUALA LUMPUR AND ISTANBUL
Carbon neutrality and peak carbon dioxide emissions have become widespread sustainability targets worldwide, particularly in emerging nations, as urbanisation and industry have accelerated. Both cities have developed policies to combat climate change, such as green construction, sustainable infrastructure, improved public transit, promoting renewable energy sources, and waste management programmes. Despite their dedication, every city faces specific difficulties. Istanbul and Kuala Lumpur are both cities affected by climate change, however, both cities manage fast urbanisation while juggling development and sustainability. This study emphasises the low-carbon initiatives of the cities, their parallels and divergences, and offer insights into urban planning and the formulation of policies that will lead to sustainable cities. It also analyses the suitable options for low carbon application that could be applied in both countries, including the use of non-renewable energy and increasing the use of clean energy to reduce CO2 emissions from buildings

HARNESSING LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION OF FISHING VILLAGE AT KAMPUNG PENDAMAR, KLANG, SELANGOR
This project was conducted at Kampung Pendamar fishing village in Klang, Selangor and the sites cover approximately 4,303 acres. The rise of globalisation has posed a challenge to the preservation/protection of the private cultural landscape in the fishing community of Kampung Pendamar. Therefore, this project aimed at promoting the assets and natural resources of Kampung Pendamar's fishing village as well as creating strong encouragement for rural youth to remain in the village. The process started with identifying issues and provided solutions for the proposed design of the project. The data collection method consisted of primary and secondary data of the subject. The proposed design options may strengthen the significance of the cultural landscape while allowing it to be part of the existing local tourism product
A COMPARISON OF URBAN RESTORATION OF HERITAGE BUILDINGS: A CASE STUDY IN ARNAVUTKÖY, ISTANBUL AND GEORGE TOWN, PENANG
This research presents a comparative analysis of heritage building urban restoration in Arnavutköy, Istanbul, and George Town, Penang. The method of this study is using observation and review analysis. This study also analyses on the restoration, community involvement, and the preservation of architectural heritage to unveils unique strategies employed in each site. The findings contribute valuable insights to the field of heritage conservation and urban development, aiding in the formulation of effective restoration approaches for diverse cultural contexts
URBAN ACUPUNCTURE IN TAKSIM GEZI PARK: IMPROVING SOCIAL LIFE FOR COMMUNITIES
Urban acupuncture provides an adaptive framework for the design and regeneration of neglected public spaces (urban voids, lost places) to strengthen the social infrastructure of a city. Urban acupuncture believes urban design and regeneration should occur through a bottom-up, democratic, pluralistic, inclusive, innovative and interdisciplinary approach. Small-scale, low-cost, fast implementable, innovative and problem-solving idea projects are developed using this new planning approach to produce fast and punctual solutions to urgent needs against the slow traditional planning processes and create exceptional places by making small touches in the urban landscape. This study aims to improve the social life of communities in Taksim Gezi Park in Istanbul, Tu?rkiye, developed through an urban acupuncture idea project. This paper introduces urban acupuncture and the explanation of the study area. Data were collected by case study and observation methods and analysed using document analysis, visual material analysis and SWOT analysis methods. The paper introduces the urban acupuncture approach and then the information of the case study -Taksim Gezi Park. A SWOT analysis of Gezi Park based on fieldwork and observation is presented. From spatial analyses, the site-specific urban acupuncture idea projects were developed to improve Taksim Gezi Park to be more comfortable and beneficial for social communities, including plants and animals
ESTABLISHMENT OF TAMU WELCOMING HUB: A LOOK-OUT PLATFORM, ENTRANCE ARCHWAY AND BRIDGE RAILINGS AT THE KAED MALAY HERITAGE LIVING LAB
This research aims to identify the ideal potential of design for the KAED Malay Heritage Living Lab of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) as part of the university's project to celebrate the public space in the university. It means to promote community bonding and celebrate knowledge as aspired by the IIUM's motto, "The Garden of Knowledge and Virtue”. The design proposal of the additional structures aims to celebrate the Malay traditional heritage setting together with its current attraction, the 'Rumah Perak', known as Rumah Kutai Beranjung. It was originally built in the 1910s in Perak. It was disassembled, restored, and relocated to the KAED Heritage Living Lab in 2018. Under this initiative, a multidisciplinary KAED student group comprising Architecture and Quantity Surveying students collaborated to design the additional structures including the look-out platform, archway, and bridge railing at the site. KAED Heritage Living Lab serves as a pedagogical space for IIUM Community. Site analysis and case study have been conducted during the study to recognise the elements of Malay traditional architecture and construction, to celebrate the spirit of the place, in line with IIUM’s mission and vision. The Tamu concept has been applied to bring back the sense of welcoming to the public community around the space to benefit from the site setting, including IIUM students and education society. The design creates interactive areas where students and the public can engage with knowledge in various forms, support outdoor learning and community engagement in a natural setting, and create public spaces that celebrate the diverse cultural community of the university
STAIRWAY TO ACCESSIBILITY: TRANSFORMING STEEP STAIRS FOR THE ELDERLY, DISABLED AND CHILDREN
This study presents an integrated application proposal with the concept of "urban acupuncture", which emphasises a contemporary and sustainable design approach, and emphasises social equality and accessibility. The study addresses the difficulties created by steep stairs for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, disabled, and children, and produces solutions by catalysing interventions compatible with the urban fabric. The urban acupuncture initiative in the Cihangir neighbourhood of the Beyoglu district of Istanbul includes socio-economic and artificial environment analyses, global examples, and literature research and aims to provide equal opportunities for all and integrate citizen participation and social interaction, with a particular focus on the challenges caused by steep stairs. The basic methodology of the study includes an urban acupuncture practice that addresses the difficulties caused by steep stairs in the Cihangir neighbourhood. Within the scope of this study, field observations and analyses are included. The proposed project consists of three main elements such as seating elements, landscaping, and billboards promoting art, aiming to create egalitarian, sustainable, educational, and social environments that include all segments of society. On the other hand, these three main elements aim to provide a more livable environment for the residents of the neighbourhood by providing solutions to security problems, lack of green areas, and insufficient public facilities. On the other hand, this study may be important for creating a more accessible and high quality of life in urban areas not only in the study area but also in Cihangir and its surrounding areas. In addition, the study can be applied and extended to different urban areas to guide similar urban development projects and further improvements
COMPARATIVE STUDY ON URBAN REGENERATION DEVELOPMENT APPROACH IN TURKIYE AND MALAYSIA CITIES
Urban planning and development in many nations now heavily emphasise on urban renewal. This comparative study aims to analyse the methods used for urban regeneration in Malaysian cities and Istanbul, Turkiye, with a particular concern on the key strategies, difficulties, and results of the selected projects. The study used a thorough examination of the literature and a qualitative analysis of case studies from both locations. The study compares the experiences of Malaysia and Turkiye to find similarities and variations in the methods used for urban regeneration. It is hoped that the analysis of this paper can benefit many parties such as policymakers, urban planners, and other stakeholders participating in urban development projects. To create more sustainable, inclusive, and livable cities in Turkiye, Malaysia, and other similar contexts around the world, the research's findings will help us to better understand effective strategies, best practices, and potential areas for improvement in urban regeneration for Istanbul and cities in Malaysia
REVITALISATION OF AL-GHAZALI WALK & COURTYARD DESIGN
The ultimate goal of the project is to propose a design for the revitalization of Al-Ghazali Walk (Road) for the IIUM Community. The project involves designing a façade of a building, flood mitigation, and Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah’s (SHAS) Mosque’s lower courtyard. The concept of the ‘Glimpse-of-Heaven’, using water and vegetation, refers to the design that will relate to the users’ journey to paradise based on Imam Al-Ghazali’s teaching. Architecture and Landscape architecture students played an important role in providing the design for the space that enhances users’ quality of life and helps them to improve their day-to-day activities. Applied Art and Design students contributed to the design by choosing suitable materials to make the design sustainable. Quantity Surveying students assist in the costing of the design to find the most affordable price for the project. In the context of IIUM, to relate the users to a journey to paradise is to create designs that could emanate a spiritual experience. The issue of flooding along the Al-Ghazali road affects the campus society in that the local community no longer has any sense of attachment to the buildings within the road’s vicinity. This project, therefore, aims to restore a sense of place within the community using a design that is manifested by the road’s name – the Al Ghazali Walk
