ONLINE LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOR INTEGRATED MULTIDISCIPLINARY COURSE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Integrated Multidisciplinary Project at the Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), generally requires students to solve relevant real problems related to the built environment. The course presents a short-term architectural development project to a cohort of students from various programmes of the Built Environment to tackle these challenges with innovative and creative solutions. The course is conducted annually as a face-to-face workshop-based activity, but during the Movement Control Order (MCO) for COVID-19, the course runs online. Transitioning to online learning can be challenging for architecture and design students as the lack of a physical studio environment limits intensive design discussion. The course requires students to work in groups to produce the design solutions for the multidisciplinary project. Therefore, this paper investigates online studios' learning experiences and challenges for Integrated Multidisciplinary Projects during the COVID-19 pandemic. A qualitative method of research was adopted for the short study. The experiences were investigated by reviewing students works and conducting a semi-structured interview with the project leaders. The findings of the study point to a range of difficulties and advantages of online studio sessions. The overall online students' performance, although positive, was lacking in physical cues. The online interaction technical limitations also hindered in-depth practical design discussion. Students expressed satisfaction with their learning experience but highlighted the need for physical interactions. Though the online studio was convenient, the students expressed the need for more interactive, stimulating, and efficient design discussions where the physical interaction would ease the division of tasks and the overall project management
REVITALISING THE WELCOMING EFFECT OF THE IIUM RECTORY BUILDING; THE INTEGRATED APPROACH
The nature of this course is to expose students to the various fields of the Built-environment and familiarise students in working with other related professions in a building team. Therefore, the students’ knowledge and skills in Other than that, this project is done to sharpen the students’ knowledge and skills in leadership, communication and team working in the context of the Islamic Values. Scholars, researchers and tourists from around the world usually make academic or social meetings at this university with the intention of presenting papers, joining intellectual discourses, attending conferences and seminars and/or going on a personal tour. Therefore, the re-design of the Rectory Building Grand Archway including the SHAS Mosque upper courtyard is one of the initiatives of Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design to provide visual context of the Main Gate Entrance and the SHAS Mosque in order to make the mosque as the focal point of the campus. To achieve the objective of this project, students are required to make a new design of the Rectory Building Grand Archway including the SHAS Mosque upper courtyard that will give a better welcoming impression of IIUM by the visitors and scholars that come to this university
RECONFIGURING HOME SPACES: AN EXPLORATION OF THE SPATIAL DIMENSION OF LOW-INCOME HOUSING FROM THE DWELLERS’ PERSPECTIVE
Providing quality housing has been a major agenda item in the effort to achieve a decent standard of living for all Malaysians by 2030. However, previous housing schemes especially for low-income people have shown no signs of further innovation in improving the quality of domestic space based on the findings of previous studies which continue to discuss the suitability of space design with the social patterns of dwellers. This article investigated the underlying knowledge from the perspective of the dwellers through the exploration of the spatial dimension. Using the creative method, this study processed the information from the dwellers on how the domestic activities were transferred to the dreamhouse model and revealed how the spatial order can be reconfigured creatively by the designer. This research clearly illuminated the underlying knowledge of spatial characteristics based on low-income opinions
LOCAL CONCEPT FOR TOURISM DEVELOPMENT OF THE NGABATATA WATERFALL AREA, EAST NUSA TENGGARA, INDONESIA
Ngabatata Waterfall is famously regarded as a natural tourist attraction with a unique natural charm, despite the inevitable problems to be solved in optimizing the potential of this waterfall. The problems include difficulty to access the location through revamped roads, absence of signage and entrance gates, and unavailability of tourist facilities such as toilets, camping grounds, and other tourist supporting facilities. Therefore, this study aims to propose a development concept for the Ngabatata waterfall based on local characteristics to reinforce the image of this area. This study applied a qualitative method to identify the potential and problems of the area by conducting descriptive analysis and formulating the concept and design of the Ngabatata waterfall area. The output of this research includes the development concept of Ngabatata waterfall as a Tourism Triangle based on nature and local culture in the Heart of Flores Island
REVEALING THE FITRAH OF THE GARDEN OF KNOWLEDGE AND VIRTUE
This project aims to redesign the Rectory Building Grand Archway and the SHAS Mosque upper courtyard of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). IIUM is known as the garden of knowledge and virtue, which is one of the leading universities in the world, where it is a place for the unification of worldly knowledge with the teachings of Islam. The project is intended to provide the visual context of the main gate entrance and the SHAS Mosque and to improve accessibility in that area
NATURAL RESTORATION OF GEO URBAN FOREST SETTING AT KL EAST PARK
This project is about integrating the geological character of the site into the park at KL East, Kuala Lumpur. The KL East Park faces urban security issues from environmental, social and natural heritage aspects. Therefore, the proposed project is to develop a forest park which will serve various activities that associate the natural and geological values of the site for local communities as integration between human activities and the natural environment. KL East Park is at Bukit Tabur foothill and comprises of 53 acres vacant forest land
