Predictors of Patients’ Adherence to Public – Private Mix Dots (PPMD) Treatment
This study determines predictors of adherence to PPMD treatment. Grounded on Pender’s health promotion model, the descriptive correlational method is used. Thirty five adherent and 35 non-adherent respondents are chosen through simple random sampling. A validated and reliable researcher-made tool is administered and processed using discriminant analysis of the SPSS version 16. This study finds out that quality of health services (b=0.476, p=0.007) directly influences while income (b=-0.381, p=0.030) and perceived social stigma (b=-0.376, p=0.032) both inversely affect adherence. Patients’ adherence towards PPMD treatment is an interchange of the health care services, social and economic factors
Theory on Meaningful Retirement Through Volunteerism: An Application among the Elderly
Retirement is a phase in an individual’s life wherein there is withdrawal from employment and for most of the elderly, regular remuneration ceases. In spite of this, there is a growing number of retirees who continues to render work through volunteering even after retirement. This correlational study enlisted a multi-stage and purposive sample of 102 volunteer retirees in Cebu City. A 5-part instrument package was utilized to (1) describe the respondents’ demographic characteristics and (2) the nature of their volunteer work. Their reported (3) psychological well-being, (4) life satisfaction and (5) physical health were also determined using the Ryff Scales for Psychological Well-Being, the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the SF-12 Health Survey, respectively. Results revealed that the most common reason why elderly retirees engage in volunteer work is to help others (n=48) followed by to serve God (n=26). A multivariate analysis of variance further indicated that those who volunteer to ‘use time’ had significantly higher levels of life satisfaction and psychological well-being while those who volunteer to ‘improve self’ had significantly higher perceived physical health. The study findings have implications for government and non-government sectors as well as indications for further research
Principled Organizational Dissent in State Universities and Colleges in Metro Cebu
State Universities and Colleges are offices of public trust. These are institutions in which accountability and transparency are indispensable and thus conscientious and principled dissent is a matter of duty. This study inquired into the instances of Principled Organizational Dissent (POD) in State Universities and Colleges (SUC) in Metro Cebu and the perception of POD among the said SUC employees. As evidenced by the cases and complaints filed before the Office of the Ombudsman Visayas, the Civil Service Commission, Region VII, and respective SUCs, SUC employees do engage in POD. The study revealed that most SUC employees –administrators and non-administrators alike- are willing to engage in POD provided that such should be channeled through the grievance mechanisms of their respective institutions. Optimistically, almost all of the respondents valued the benefits of dissent over and above its putative detriments. Characteristically Filipino, most respondents believed that they have the support of their families, friends, and other people who are important to them whenever they engage in POD. The respondents’ positive attitude towards conscientious and principled dissent underscores a deep sense of public service, professionalism, ethical and political maturity, participatory citizenship, and a profound commitment to a just and humane society. Hence, the essence of democracy is vibrant in the higher institutions of learning, particularly in the State Universities and Colleges in Metro Cebu
Heterosexual Men in Homosexual Encounter
Sexuality is an important aspect of being human. Sex as an expression of sexuality is a biologically important means to ensure the continuation of the human race. However, sexuality has social ramifications. The experience of the heterosexual man in engaging in homosexual sex is a social taboo, thus, is not at all talked about in contrast to the homosexual man’s experience. It is therefore the primary aim of this study to analyze the underlying reasons why heterosexual men engage in sex with other men. The study used deductive approach to theory development to create a theory that would explain the occurrence of a phenomenon that was observed. Secondary analysis was used to analyze data which was collected from available researches and literatures. Results revealed that heterosexual men who engage in sex with other men are egocentrics, pleasure-seekers who wanted to meet their egocentricities. Homosexual practices of heterosexual men are products of men’s inherent narcissism or the love of themselves which is a result of low self-esteem and inferiorit
Diabetes Mellitus Management: Herbal or Prescribed Medication
The objective of the study is to describe which management method works well in type1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Specifically, it aims to determine which type of management- herbal, prescribed medication or both will effectively lowered blood glucose level. Moreover, it will also discuss the duration of use, severity of its manifestations and their significant difference in terms of blood glucose levels in both types of DM. The researchers used non experimental descriptive correlation design research to describe the relationship among variables. Purposive sampling was employed in the study. The study was conducted at a government owned general, tertiary medical center in the city of Cebu, particularly, this was done in the Diabetes Mellitus Clinic. There were 340 randomly selected diabetic clients type 1 and type 2 who were studied. The researchers used questionnaires during the guided interview which comprises two parts: the client’s demographic data and the situational appraisal. Review of pertinent data from the out-client department records of diabetic clients was also done. The interview and records review were initiated with the consent from the institution and the participants themselves. The comparison made between the management types of diabetes mellitus revealed that it did not influence the blood glucose level of the clients. Moreover, the researchers concluded that to significantly lower the blood glucose, one should not only manage the illness with herbal medication but also manage the diet and exercise
Graph Coloring Using Linear Algebra
The classical problem in Combinatorics and Graph Theory of coloring the vertices of a given graph properly using a prescribed number of colors, is considered. This paper describes an application of elementary linear algebra over a finite field of order q to this problem, where q is the number of available colors
Reality Shows On-the-Air and Their Listeners’ Perceptions: An Interplay of Gratifications, Hypodermic Needle and Selective Exposure Theories
This study described and examined the reality show phenomenon in Cebu City, in terms of their titles, formats, target audience, and audience’s perceptions toward the shows. It also aimed to offer ways of improving the instruction and curriculum of the Broadcast Communication courses in the undergraduate and graduate levels, based on the research findings. The descriptive method was used with the content analysis as the research design in gathering data and in analyzing the responses of the interviewed respondents. Four Cebu City barangays were chosen as representative barangays from the clusters which comprise the whole city of Cebu. The findings revealed that the 17 year-old teen-agers, prefer to listen to the reality show programs. The shows have common features which include having: a) live program handlers, b) topics to be discussed, sent through letters phoned in to the radio station, c.) discussions done by the host alone or by the host together with the callers, and d.) solutions presented
Science Literacy-Focused Materials on Achievement and Attitude toward Learning Chemistry
The study evaluated the effect of researcher developed science literacy instructional materials on pre-service elementary teachers’ attitude and achievement in chemistry during the first semester of school year 2012-2013. Using quasi-experimental design, 14 validated reading materials that were developed by the researcher were utilized as supplemental reading materials in a chemistry classroom. The experimental group was exposed to 30 minute PowerPoint presentation followed by reading infusion activity while the control group was exposed to the same PowerPoint presentation followed by either seat work or class discussion. English Proficiency Test was also given to determine if groups are comparable. Descriptive statistics was used to describe pretest and posttest scores while T-test of Independent Samples was utilized to analyze results from English Proficiency Test. ANCOVA was employed to determine the effects of the teaching strategies on students’ achievement. Wilcoxon-Mann Whitney Test was used to determine whether there is a significant difference in the attitude. Results indicated comparable performance between the two groups. The use of materials focused on science literacy has the same effect with the conventional method
Predictors of Quality of Life of Institutionalized and Community-Dwelling Elderly
This study determined what cognitive (educational attainment and cognitive ability) and non-cognitive factors (marital status, basic and instrumental activities of daily living, spirituality and social support) predict quality of life of among the elderly admitted in elderly institutions and community-dwelling elderly. A total of 147 elderly responded to the invitation as respondents (46 institutionalized and 101 community-dwelling). The findings revealed that among community-dwelling elderly only social support (non-cognitive) significantly correlated (with r=0.26; p-value=0.00) with quality of life. Among the institutionalized elderly educational attainment and cognitive ability (cognitive factors) and social support (non-cognitive) are significantly related to quality of life. Moreover, when the elderly cognitive and non-cognitive profiles were correlated with QOL both educational attainment and cognitive ability significantly correlated and basic and instrumental ADL as well as social support. Regression analyses revealed the consistent role of social support as the most significant predictor of QOL. It is concluded that QOL cannot only be predicted through the cognitive characteristics of elderly but more on the non-cognitive factors
Some Convolution-Type Identities of a q-Analogue of Second Kind r-Whitney Numbers
A q-analogue of second kind r-Whitney numbers, denoted by ,[,], is defined by means of a triangular recurrence relation. The rational generating function is obtained which, consequently, gives an explicit formula in symmetric function form. This explicit formula is used to give combinatorial interpretation for ,[,] in the context of 0-1 tableau. A kind of generalization of Carlitz formula is derived using the combinatorics of A-tableaux. Moreover, some convolution-type identities for ,[,] are established which yield LU-factorization of the matrices (,[,]),≥0
