The Cebu Normal University College of Nursing is in its stage of metamorphosing towards a world class reputation. Studies have provided insights into some common reasons for passage from one stage to another and offer some clues about how long an institution is likely to thrive based upon the internal culture, behavior and processes. In pursuance of CNU\u27s thrust which is to Teach minds, touch hearts, nurture character , and transform lives . The College of Nursing aims at producing graduates who are not only academically competent but are also compassion - driven health practitioners. Hence, this study has looked into the mental wellness of the nursing students of CNU. Specifically, it delved into the common problems besetting the students that were beyond the normal range of management. With the use of Mooney Problem checklist, a standardized questionnaire was developed to identify the problems. The usefulness of the problem checklist approach lies in its economy in appraising the major concerns of a group and in bringing into the open the problems of each student in a group. The rationale of the checklist fell into five broad categories: to facilitate counseling interviews, to make group surveys leading to a plan for individualized action as basis for guidance program development, to increase teacher understanding in regular classroom teaching and to conduct research on the problems of youth. The College of Nursing students were asked to answer the questions pertaining to concerns that have plagued them. It was revealed in the results that out of 409 Nursing Students 96 or 23.5% had problems that were beyond the normal range of management. And 72.5% of the total population or 313 students were coping well with the challenges surrounding them. Generally, the majority of the College of Nursing Students were mentally well. However, a surprising reality was revealed in the result that the primary problem which beleaguered the subjects was Adjust the school work with the underlying issues of familial and interpersonal concerns. Consequently, the respondents were virtually beset with pressures from institutional expectations as well as from their significant others. Their problems call for relational integrity. In an atmosphere of fear, self-doubt and skepticism, gaining confidence, the chances of sustaining the necessary level of support from goodhearted, highly educated teachers, mercy giving and loving parents are highly recommended

oai:jhe.researchcommons.org:journal-1039This study determined the conciliation competencies of the Lupong Tagapamayapa (Conciliation Committee) of selected barangays in Cebu City. The study was conducted in 4 barangays, namely: Barangay Guadalupe and Barangay Sapangdaku from the South District and Barangay San Antonio and Barangay Hipodromo from the North District. Included in this study were the members of the Lupon of Barangays Sapangdaku, Guadalupe, San Antonio and Hipodromo who were appointed by the barangay captains by virtue of Section 399 of the 1991 Local Government Code of the Philippines, which states: The punong Barangay, taking into consideration the proposed appointments or any recommendation for appointment, shall, within IO days after posting appoint members who shall be determined to be suitable therefore. The results revealed that the majority of the Lupon members belonged to 60 years old and above bracket rooted. This was historically historically in the fact that the early local paralegal system was already settling family or neighborhood disputes through their village council of elders presided over by the village chieftain or datu. The Lupon members of Barangays Guadalupe, Sapangdaku, San Antonio and Hipodromo were highly competent in the conciliation competencies in the aspects of integrity, impartiality and fairness, independence of mind, proficiency and reputation. But their clients were not satisfied with their manner of exercising barangay justice. Age, gender, educational attainment, and number of years serving in the Lupon had no bearing on their level of competence. There were no noted differences in the level of conciliation competencies of the Lupon members in Barangays Guadalupe, Sapangdaku, Hipodoromo and San Antonio

LUMEN: A Case Study in Domestic Violence

    No full text
A case study was done on Lumen, a wife who is a victim of domestic violence with the husband as the perpetrator. Utilizing narrative analysis, the findings, as supported by the propositions of sociological functionalist and feminist theories, revealed that Lumen had basically a low self-esteem which later became even lower due to the abuses; her family followed a patriarchal system in which the husband dominates in decision-making and control of the family. She demonstrated an adaptation to the abusive condition as an effect to the repeated abuses, and displayed a distorted decision-making ability. The inclusion of her children in the physical abuse of her husband has led to seek help at WCFC-VSMMC

This study determined the effects of classical or soft and fast or stimulative music on the duration of the second stage of labor among primigravida or women in their first pregnancy at the Cebu City Medical Center. An experimental design was utilized in this study with an experimental and a control group. The treatment utilized in this study was music therapy which was classified into two: classical or soft music and stimulating or fast music, and these also served as its independent variables. The dependent variable was the duration of the second stage of labor from the full cervical dilatation to the delivery of the baby which was measured in minutes using a stopwatch. A random sampling was utilized with the following criteria considered: a) Primigravida or women on their first pregnancy who were admitted at the Delivery Room; b) age bracket: 20-30 years old; c) no complications related to pregnancy. All respondents had Normal Spontaneous Vaginal Delivery (NSVD). Each qualified participant was chosen randomly and assigned randomly to each of the three conditions. A total of forty-five respondents (15 for the classical music group, 15 for fast music group and 15 for silence or the control group) were selected. The shorter the second stage of labor, the more effective was the treatment provided. The findings revea.led that the group of mothers who had no music (mean= 14.8) had the shortest duration of the second stage of labor, followed by the group using fast music (mean= !6.8) and the longest duration was that of the group using slow music (mean=35.87). ANOVA computation was done (F= l4.91) which was significant at p=.05. Scheffe\u27s Test further showed that fast music was more effective in hastening the second stage of labor than slow music and a significant difference between the slow music group and the no music group was also identified

Visual Biofeedback: Adjunct Mirror Intervention during Stage Two Labor among Primiparous Women

    No full text
Background: Since time immemorial, difficulty in bringing forth another human being has been one of the greatest apprehensions women have to confront themselves with, as exemplified by cases of infant mortality and incidence of death among mothers due to giving birth in such an alarming rate. It can be noted that techniques to efficiently as sist the birthing process have become a prevalent trend. In connection with this, this study was conducted in the spirit of providing ample information on a unique feedback method which is deemed to have a high probability in the improvement of the assisted birthing process. This determined the effectiveness of visual biofeedback in hastening stage II of labour of primiparous women administered with adjunct interven tion. Specifically, this study answered the question: Is there a difference in the length of stage II of labour between the control and experimental groups? The method consisted of a on-equivalent post-test design with twenty primiparous women distributed to both control and study groups chosen through purposive sampling. A 3 x 2 foot mirror to provide vis ual biofeedback (treatment), a stopwatch to measure the length of time elapsed from full cervical dilatation and effacement to the delivery of the baby, and a tally sheet for recording data were used in data gather ing. Results: The findings showed that the control group (not subjected to mirror) obtained a mean of I 8.92 (SD=7.17) while the experimental group (subjected to mirror) obtained a mean of 6. 77 with a mean differ ence of 12.15 (SD=S.24). The computed t- test value was 4.37, which was greater than the table value of 2.23 tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The results showed a significant difference in the duration of the second stage of labor, thus, the use of a mirror as a feedback mecha nism during the second stage of labor reduces its duration
