    No full text
The grain protectant efficacy of Makabuhay, Tinospora rumphii stem extract was tested on adult maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais M. Evaluation of phytochemicals present in the extract was conducted to identify its bioactive compounds. The ethanolic stem extract of T. rumphii contains the following phytochemicals: alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids and tannins. These phytochemicals are known to possess pesticidal activities against insects and other pests. The grain protectant efficacy of T. rumphii against corn weevils was manifested by the percentage of mortality of weevils, number of corn seed holes; weight loss and percentage corn germination. Results revealed that the corn weevils treated with the highest concentration (18%) of T. rumphii manifest the highest percentage of weevils’ mortality and significantly higher (p =0.000) as compared to the negative control and the other treatment concentrations. In addition, the mortality of corn weevils treated with the plant extract is concentration-dependent. The average number of corn seed holes treated the T. rumphii extract is statistically lower as compared to the negative control. Moreover, the highest concentration (18%) of the plant extract showed the lowest average number of holes. This implies that T. rumphii is responsible for the inhibition of the weevils from infesting the corn seeds. Furthermore, result revealed significant decrease (p =0.000) on the average weight loss of corn seeds previously treated with the plant extract. The highest concentration of T. rumphii manifest the lowest percentage weight loss. Result also showed a significant increase (p = 0.000) of percentage germination of corn seeds randomly selected from the control and the treated groups. The highest concentration of the plant extract reveals the highest percentage of germination. T. rumphii stem extract therefore is an effective grain protectant against maize weevis, S. zeamis due to the presence of phytochemicals flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids and tannins which showed synergistic effects in terms of insecticidal action to maize weevil

The Lived Experience of Novice Clinical Instructors “Something New, Somewhere New, Someone New”

    No full text
Nursing education in the Philippines has had its own share of fluctuations in the production of fresh graduates. A small portion of these fresh board passers has taken solace in the nursing academe who had expressed their need for clinical instructors. The rationale of the study was to understand the meaning of the novice clinical instructors’ lived experiences as they handle nursing students in their respective clinical assignment and learn the consequences of this phenomenon in the course of themes that would thoroughly described their experiences. This research utilized phenomenology to describe their experiences and meaning of the lived experiences being novice clinical instructors and this helps in reducing individual experiences to a description of the universal essence. Purposive sampling was employed in this study. The participants in the study were registered nurses with no clinical experiences when hired, and those with less than three years employment in the academe. Their responses during the interviews were recorded and transcribed. Four major themes emerged; these were Inspirational Drives, with subthemes of Thoughts Becoming a CI, The Prestige in the Profession, and the Motivation in Positive feedbacks, Intrinsic Features, with subthemes of Possessing Effective Good Character, and Knowledge as Power. Intimidating Circumstances, with subthemes of Uncertainties and Apprehensions with Respect to their New Role, Realisms of Being a CI, Coping with Pressure, and Self Confidence and Improved Relations, with subthemes of Respect, Relationship Building, and Self Development. Many novice clinical instructors perceived their role as prestigious however when confronted with challenges some were doubtful, apprehensive, and others felt inadequate not only with their intellectual/professional capability but also with their interpersonal relationships. The positive feedbacks that they received from their students motivate them to become effective mentors. Furthermore, being a novice signifies an entry into the unknown that tests not only their confidence but also their individual capabilities to impart knowledge to their students

Assessing Students’ Volition and Performance Through Integrated Metacognitive Instruction

    No full text
Each student has a unique way of learning things. But whether or not it is influenced by a teaching strategy is something that needs to be determined. The study analyzed if teaching methods could affect students’ volition and choice of a learning strategy. Using the adaptation concept as a framework, the study designed a quasi-experiment that involved two intact classes of 36 freshmen students taught with integrated metacognitive instruction (IMI) and traditional lecture method (TLM). A prior consent was sought from these students and the university at which the study was conducted. The students were enrolled in a general biology course in a state university in central Philippines during the first semester of the Academic Year 2013-2014. Data were collected before and after the implementation of the methods through the use of learning strategies and volition questionnaire, interview, and students’ journal. Results show that students’ primary learning strategy did not change with teaching methods. Students’ volition changed significantly with IMI but not with TLM. The choice of a learning strategy and control over the learning process is intrinsic to students, but the way a set of strategies is being combined may be influenced by the teaching methods

Policy Impact Analysis on Women’s Health and Safe Motherhood Project Implementation in DOH Birthing Centers in Metro Cebu, Philippines

Childbirth or parturition is the culmination of pregnancy with the birth of one or more infants from a woman’s uterus. It is perhaps the most exciting and risky journey a woman could take over a lifetime. Every day, 1500 women die from pregnancy- or childbirth-related complications. These complications may be due to direct or indirect causes that can endanger the life of the birthing woman. To address these complications, the Department of Health initiated a program known as “Women’s Health and Safe Motherhood (WHSM)”. This program is aimed at strengthening women’s health and safe motherhood services for the disadvantaged Filipino women. One of its implementation strategies is the integration of hospitals and rural health facilities through the creation of birthing centers with the provision of general and emergency obstetric medical supplies. This study is aimed at evaluating the impact of birthing centers accredited by the Department of Health in improving the delivery of maternal health services through the “Women’s Health and Safe Motherhood (WHSM)” program to the intended recipients. TEPA was utilized to analyze the impact of the birthing center implementation in Cebu City, the result revealed a less than favorable program performance since its implementation in 2007

The Mendicants’ Rap Poetry: Critique from the Margins

    No full text
This paper deals with the rap poetry performed by the mendicants aboard Public Utility Jeeps (PUJ) plying the streets of Metro Cebu. The rap poems which were collected either through audio recording during actual performances or through handwritten copies provided by the mendicants themselves were basically in Cebuano Visayan with intermittent code switches in Tagalog and English. The fourteen rap poems collected were translated into English. The rap poems were primarily intended as an apparatus of mendicancy. However, under critical examination, the mendicants’ rap poetry subverts the immediate pragmatic authorial intent and behaves as an autonomous text replete in critical elements in manifold forms of social redress, protest, and commentary. From a mere apparatus of mendicancy, it has metamorphosed into a formidable apparatus of critique from “below” so much so that it is proffered by the mendicants, -the marginalized who live at the margins of society. Gravitating around the predominant themes of marginality and poverty, the rap poems resound as a searing indictment of a society whose publicly professed ethical and cultural values are discredited by the very existence of the subterranean social pathologies that breed the poorest of the poor

On the First Kind r-Whitney Numbers and the Combinatorics of 0-1 Tableaux

The limit expression, denoted by ,(, ) was evaluated completely that yields an explicit formula in elementary symmetric function form. The limit ,(, ) has possessed some necessary properties like recurrence relations, generating functions, orthogonality relation, inverse relation and matrix factorization. It has been identified that the numbers ,(, ) are certain generalization of Gould-Hopper numbers, which are useful in biology and reliability theory. One can easily verify that these numbers are equivalent to the first kind r-Whitney numbers using their existing properties. In this present paper, a combinatorial meaning for r-Whitney numbers of the first kind in the context of (0, 1)-tableau is constructed using the explicit formula in symmetric function form. Moreover, some convolution-type formulas are derived that, consequently, yield LU-factorization of the matrix whose entries are the first kind r-Whitney numbers.

Suprasegmental Features of the Philipine English Variety as Spoken in Southern Cebu

This study aims to heed the call of giving importance to the creative aspects of first language interference in oral English communication. It contends that languages have their own distinct features but this does not mean inferiority or superiority to another. The suprasegmental features of the Philippine English Variety as spoken in the southern towns of Cebu are identified to examine the aspects of first language interference in speaking English. An investigation on the distinct suprasegmental features of the southern Cebuano Variation was first identified and compared to the standard. Results indicated that the Southern Cebuano Variation was spoken with a sing-song twang. This was characterized with a strong emphasis on the last syllable of most words, especially when they were used in a sentence. Further, findings revealed that the distinct prosodic features of the L1 studied did not significantly affect the respondents’ English prosody despite the obvious disparity of both languages. The phonological interference identified was phonemic, not prosodic. Therefore, the L1 interferences in stress, pitch and intonation do not have a significant influence on the suprasegmental features of the Filipino English variety spoken in the southern municipalities of Cebu. The prosodic interferences identified were not noteworthy enough to swerve speakers from the standard. In an attempt to explain such phenomenon, Flege’s Merger hypothesis claims that the merging of phonetic properties of phones impact both the first language and the target language (Lott, 2012). As speakers become invariably influenced by L2, they may experience phonological modifications. Hence, while one think that acquiring new phoneme(s) will be more difficult than rearranging the two existing sounds from allophones of the same phoneme to separate phonemes, research has proven otherwise (Major and Kim qtd. in Yavas, 2011). This study concluded that inclination for prosodic interference was higher when the structures or sounds were similar in L1 and L2 than when they were dissimilar. This study recommends further investigation of the phonemic structure of the Cebuano-Visayan Southern Variety

A survey on the breeding sites of Aedes species mosquito in Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines, was conducted for the development of an integrated community-based dengue control program. The study included the identification of Aedes species breeding sites and an interview of households on their practices towards dengue prevention. Villages of six Barangays (lowest level of formal local administration) with the highest and lowest dengue incidences based on 2013 to August 2014 record of City Health Office were sampled for the study. Barangays with the highest dengue incidences include Banilad, Canduman and Subangdako, while the three remaining Barangays with the lowest number of dengue incidences include Casili, Tingub and Opao. Twenty households were purposively chosen per Barangay. A total of 219 breeding sites were identified and infested with mosquito larvae. Of the 219 breeding sites surveyed, 110 were infested with mosquito larvae comprising Ae. aegypti (92.86%) and Ae. albopictus (7.14%) in Barangays with high dengue incidences. One hundred nine breeding sites from Barangays located in areas with lowest dengue incidences were infested with Ae. aegypti (81.82%) and Ae. albopictus (18.18%). Of the 219 breeding sites surveyed, barrels/drums had the highest infestation rate of larvae amounting to 43.64% and 61.47% in both Barangays with high and low dengue incidences. In sun-exposed containers (outdoor), 87.27% were identified in Barangays with high dengue incidences and 91.74% from low dengue incidences areas. The presence of higher number of mosquito breeding sites that were infested with larvae was not correlated to the dengue incidences in both areas
