IBA Karachi’s Centre for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) held its ‘Winter Immersion Program’ (WIP) from December 16 to 19 at the City Campus, featuring renowned international trainers. Dr. Sanna Ilonen and Joachim Ramstrom, from Finland\u27s University of Turku, along with Islam Mohamed from Saudi Arabia’s Arweqah Alreyadah, led workshops on entrepreneurship education, research, and incubation management. Examining the factors that influence individual environmental behavior and attitudes: a study of university students in Karachi
This study delves into the nuanced realm of environmental awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours among 260 university students, both enrolled in master\u27s and bachelor’s programs at the University of Karachi (KU) and the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) in Karachi. Through a carefully designed questionnaire tailored for university students, data was collected and rigorously analysed. The study presents solid reliability testing findings, confirming the consistent and trustworthy assessment of essential environmental metrics such as Environmental Education, Environmental Knowledge, and Social Environment. The influence of media consumption on environmental attitudes and behaviours was also highly reliable, offering useful insights into the elements driving environmentally conscious behaviour. Correlation research revealed fascinating correlations between several factors, revealing light on environmental attitudes and actions. The connection between environmental knowledge, cultural influences, core beliefs, and many facets of environmental behaviour was highlighted through key relationships. The study found critical determinants of environmental behaviour using regression analysis in three unique models. Notably, the Social Environment and Environmental Knowledge emerged as significant predictors, highlighting their critical significance in motivating actions and basic values. The models also revealed insights into the influence of gender, academic background, and origin on consumerism tendencies and environmentally conscious behaviour. This study offers a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics shaping individuals\u27 environmental attitudes and behaviours, providing a valuable foundation for fostering sustainable practices and promoting environment consciousness within an academic setting
The Impact of Capability and Motivation on Performance of Crowdworkers in Crowdsourcing
Crowdsourcing has evolved to become an important business model since its inception. It offers cost effective and time efficient solutions by enabling large groups of individuals to contribute their knowledge, expertise, and resources via the Internet. Despite its advantages, the quality of tasks submitted by crowdworkers remains a significant concern, often influenced by their performance, which is driven by capability and motivation. Traditional performance metrics focus on an individual’s ability and effort, shaped by motivational factors. However, in the crowdsourcing domain, where worker associations are temporary and background information is limited, understanding how capability and motivation interact to influence performance is critical for improving task quality.
While prior research has explored crowdworker motivation, participation drivers, and reward mechanisms, the relationship between capability, motivation, and performance remains unexplored. Specifically, there is a lack of clarity on how to define, assess, and quantify a capable and motivated crowdworker, as well as how these constructs interactively affect performance. This research aims to address these gaps by thoroughly investigating the impact of capability and motivation on crowdworker performance. It explores which motivational elements most significantly influence performance, how to compute capability and motivation, and the nature of their combined effect – whether multiplicative or additive. Additionally, the study examines mediation effects i.e., whether capability mediates the motivation-performance relationship and vice versa.
The research is conducted in two parts: a survey analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) and an experimental study. The SEM analysis reveals that expectancy, extrinsic instrumentality and intrinsic valence are key drivers of motivation, while capacity, matching, and opportunity significantly enhance capability of crowdworker. Both constructs positively impact performance, with motivation fully mediating the capability-performance relationship and capability partially mediating the motivation-performance relationship, implying that an without motivation, capability alone may not significantly impact performance. The experimental study further confirms that the combined effect is multiplicative rather than additive.
This research is the first to formulate and validate the capability construct for crowdworkers and to investigate the multiplicative interaction of capability and motivation on performance. It provides valuable insights for practitioners in designing micro-tasks and identifying capable, motivated workers, even in contexts with limited monetary incentives. By understanding the interplay between capability and motivation, organization can improve the overall quality of crowdsourced submissions, ensuring more effective and culturally sensitive outcomes
Shanakht: providing closure in times of grief
In this 10-minute and 47-second video documentary, I delved deep into the Shanakht project – an initiative launched in 2015 by the Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) in collaboration with NADRA (National Database & Registration Authority) and the Edhi Foundation. The project’s goal is to identify unclaimed dead bodies and inform their families. Over time, it expanded to include the Chhipa Foundation and the Sindh Forensic DNA & Serology Lab. Now, it also identifies unconscious patients and is useful in mass disaster cases.
Shanakht uses two methods for identification. The first and most used is the biometric system – where fingerprints are taken from the deceased or unconscious patients and sent to NADRA to get details. Once they receive the identity and details of the victim, CPLC staff contacts the family to come, identify, and claim the body. The second and more recent method is DNA analysis – usually done on decomposed or damaged bodies where fingerprints cannot be taken.
This story is newsworthy because it holds strong human interest, providing emotional closure to families of the deceased and contributing to a reduction in unidentified road traffic fatalities. Raising awareness of this initiative is essential to help families locate missing loved ones more effectively. While writing this abstract, more than 1,500 people had learned about Shanakht through this documentary.
For documentary production, I independently managed everything from pre-production to post-production. During pre-production, I conducted in-depth research, prepared interview questions, contacted relevant stakeholders, and created a storyboard. To familiarise myself with the primary location – Edhi Morgue at Sohrab Goth, a chaotic and sensitive space – I did a detailed recce of the site.
After that, for production, I single-handedly coordinated with the talking heads, conducted their interviews, and shot B-roll footage while ensuring the proper functioning of technical equipment, including camera and microphone. In post-production, I wrote the script, selected key clips, downloaded stock footage, obtained the latest data from CPLC, and edited the final video using Adobe Premiere Pro.
In short, the documentary provides a holistic view of the Shanakht project, featuring interviews from victims\u27 family member, the Shanakht Project Head, the Edhi Foundation Head, an Edhi ambulance driver, and the Director of the Sindh Forensic DNA & Serology Lab (SFDL). I also reached out to Police Surgeon Dr. Sumaiyya Syed for an interview, but she was unavailable at the time due to travel commitments

AI-Powered Medical Appointment and Triage System
Most Telehealth platforms rely heavily on web or mobile interfaces, leaving behind users who lack smartphones or broadband internet. This project introduces an AI-Powered Medical Appointment and Triage System, leveraging Twilio for phone-based interactions, Node.js for call orchestration, Mistral AI for advanced symptom analysis (including structured function calling), PostgreSQL for persistent record storage, and a dashboard for real-time analytics. By capturing every voice call and summarizing the recognized symptoms, the system automates triage decisions, streamlines immediate doctor bookings, and provides administrators with comprehensive insight into patient volumes and conditions. Deployed in Docker containers on an AWS EC2 instance with a Nginx proxy for HTTPS, it meets strict security standards for telehealth deployments. This voice-first solution helps clinics reduce manual overhead, extends telehealth accessibility to older or rural populations, and unifies triage data in one place for robust operational analytics. End users can dial a standard phone number, speak about their ailments, and receive actionable guidance or appointments without navigating complex apps. Meanwhile, doctors and administrators gain centralized analytics view of call logs, recognized symptoms, and departmental load, fostering data-informed decision-making across the organization
