Management of psychosis with individualised homoeopathic medicines: A case series
Background: Psychosis is a clinical syndrome. The main clinical signs of psychosis are delusion and hallucination. It is a crucial focus of diagnosis and treatment in neurologic and psychiatric practice since it functionally disturbs numerous psychiatric, neurodevelopmental, neurologic and medical diseases.
Case summary: The World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale were used to evaluate the patients. The outcomes in all the cases suggested that homoeopathic treatment can play a significant role in easing psychotic symptoms and restoring the patient’s ability to understand. The most frequently prescribed medicines and potencies in these cases were Natrum muriaticum, Lachesis, Lycopodium, Stramonium in 30C and 200C potencies, Sulphur, Calcarea carb., Carcinosinum in 200C potencies and Ignatia amara in 30C potency. Extensive research studies are needed to generate additional, strong evidence of Homoeopathy in psychosis
Homoeopathy in bipolar affective disorder: A review of research evidence
Background: Bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) is an episodic, chronic psychiatric disorder characterized by fluctuations in mood state and energy. It affects more than 1% of the world’s population. BPAD causes cognitive and functional impairment and raised mortality, particularly death by suicide. At present, although alternative therapies are not the first-line treatment of mood disorders, there is emerging evidence showing that such treatments are effective. Objective: The objective of this review is to synthesize existing research evidence and literature to determine the usefulness of homoeopathic medicines in the management of manic and depressive episodes of BPAD. Materials and Methods: Two authors performed the review processes independently. Articles published on BPAD between 2000 and 2022 in the English language in various peer-reviewed journals were included in the review. A comprehensive search using keywords was done in electronic databases, such as PubMed and Science Direct. The rubrics in the synthesis repertory corresponding to the diagnostic criteria as per the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases for Mania and Depression were repertorised to arrive at a group of homoeopathic medicines and their indications are discussed in detail. Results: A total of three articles were identified on BPAD and Homoeopathy. The most probable medicines indicated for the manic episode were Agaricus muscarius, Anacardium, Belladonna, Hyoscyamus, Lachesis, Stramonium, Tarantula hispanica and Veratrum album. Conclusion: There is a scarcity of literature to draw any conclusion on the role of Homoeopathy in BPAD. Prospective, controlled trials are necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of homoeopathic medicines in the management of BPAD

Homoeopathic treatment of oral leucoplakia: A case report
Introduction: Oral leucoplakia (OL), a premalignant lesion which is more frequently encountered in elderly people, is defined as a white lesion of the oral mucosa. Smoking is one of the most common risk factors. Conventionally, surgical excision is the most recommended treatment option for OL. Case Summary: A 55-year-old male presented with the complaint of a whitish lesion inside the left angle of the mouth (buccal mucosa) for the past 1½ years. The case was clinically diagnosed as OL. He was advised for surgical excision, but he preferred to go for homoeopathic treatment. Based on characteristic symptoms, repertorial analysis and individualisation, homoeopathic medicine Kali iodatum (200C and 1M) followed by Syphilinum 200C was prescribed. Over 14 months of treatment, the patient initially improved with Kali iodatum followed by total remission of the lesion by Syphilinum. Modified Naranjo Criteria for Homoeopathy (MONARCH) was used to evaluate the attribution of recovery to homoeopathic treatment. The MONARCH score was (+8 on a ‘−6 to +13’ scale), which is indicative of the possibility of patient’s improvement resulting from the homoeopathic treatment. This clinical case report demonstrates the beneficial effects of individualised homoeopathic treatment for the management of premalignant lesions like OL
Polycystic ovarian syndrome and homoeopathic management: A case series
Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder of chronically abnormal ovarian function and hyperandrogenism (abnormally elevated androgen levels). It is manifested by irregular menstrual cycles, polycystic ovaries, acne, excess unwanted hair growth, obesity, etc. PCOS can affect a female’s fertility. The global prevalence of PCOS varies from 5% to 18%, with an average prevalence of 276·4 cases per 100,000 people in Europe. The prevalence of PCOS in India ranges from 3.7 to 22.5% depending on the population studied. Case Summary: This is a case series of five patients suffering from PCOS, assessed on the basis of intermenstrual duration, acne global score, Ferriman- Gallwey score (FG score), ultrasound reports for the size of ovaries, biochemical and hormonal reports at baseline and at the end of treatment. In this case series, individualised homoeopathic medicines were given for the management of PCOS. Indicated constitutional homoeopathic medicines, such as Pulsatilla, Sepia, Calc. carb. and Nat. mur. were prescribed to these patients. The cases responded with marked improvement in intermenstrual duration and body mass index scores, along with hormonal derangement
Usage of Arsenicum album 30C as a prophylactic medicine in healthcare workers of a COVID health centre – A report
The homoeopathic medicine Arsenicum album 30C was recommended as prophylaxis by the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, along with general precautions during COVID-19 pandemic. A retrospective cohort study was conducted in Delhi, India, during May–August 2020 to evaluate the effectiveness of Arsenicum album 30C as prophylaxis for COVID-19 in a high-risk group of healthcare workers (HCWs). HCWs (n = 100) were categorised into two groups based on the number of days Arsenicum album 30C was administered during their duty: 7 days (N1 = 38) or 14 days (N2 = 62). Participants underwent COVID-19 testing (rapid antigen test/reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction) at the end of duty or earlier if symptoms developed. The incidence of a positive COVID-19 test and/or symptoms were primary outcome measures. The time taken for symptom resolution was the secondary outcome. At baseline, 89% of HCWs were at high risk, as per the World Health Organisation 2019 COV HCW risk categorization. At the end of duty, 98% of HCWs reported negative COVID-19 tests. No COVID-19-like symptoms were observed in the N2 group. In N1, four HCWs developed COVID-19-like symptoms, while two tested positive and recovered within 10 days
Homoeopathic medicine Arsenic album 200C in treatment of plaque psoriasis: A case report
Introduction: Psoriasis is a non-communicable, chronic, mostly painful, disfiguring disease. It can have a negative impact on patients’ quality of life, which may occur at any age. The conventional treatment includes local and systemic therapies, as well as phototherapy. The need for treatment is usually lifelong as remission occurs quite frequently. Case Summary: We present here a case report of a 32-year-old woman with psoriatic lesions all over the body for 15 years with intolerable itching. The present case was completely cured after 1 year 6 months of regular treatment with individualised homoeopathic medicine without any adverse effects. After detailed case taking, Arsenic album 200C was administered. The Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score was 49 before the treatment and 0 at the end of the treatment. The Modified Naranjo criteria for Homoeopathy (MONARCH) was used for assessing causal attribution, where the score was +8, suggesting that the clinical improvement was the result of the homoeopathic treatment. Before and after treatment photographs were taken to assess the improvement. This evidence-based case could pave way for further research into using individualised homoeopathy for plaque psoriasis
Individualised homoeopathic treatment for pilonidal sinus: A case report
Introduction: Pilonidal sinus is a very common inflammatory disease of the gluteal region. The most common site of occurrence is the natal cleft. It can cause discomfort, absence from work and social embarrassment. There is no single, widely accepted therapy available for this condition. In most cases, the treatment option for this disease is surgical intervention, but recurrences following surgery are common. Case Summary: A 15-year-old male patient reported discharge from the sinus cavity in the natal cleft along with pain and discomfort. Nitric acid, a homoeopathic medicine, was prescribed during the initial consultation and the patient was followed up for four months at regular intervals. The Visual Analog Scale and the Outcome Related to the Impact on Daily Living (ORIDL) scale were used to assess the patient’s subjective improvement. The signs of objective improvement were documented through photographs. The score for Modified Naranjo Criteria for Homoeopathy (MONARCH) was +8, which supports the causal attribution of the individualised homoeopathic medicine Nitric acid to the success of this case
Utility of individualised homoeopathic medicines in improving social interaction in childhood autism: A prospective, open-label, single arm study
Background: Childhood autism is a pervasive developmental disorder. There has been an upsurge in its prevalence in past few decades. The social deficit is the most disabling symptom of autism. There is an immediate need to explore new interventions to effectively address childhood autism. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the usefulness of individualised homoeopathic medicine in improving social interaction in childhood autism. Materials and Methods: This one-year duration study was conducted in the outpatient department of the National Homoeopathy Research Institute in Mental Health, Kottayam, Kerala. Thirty-five children fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of childhood autism (as per ICD 10-F84.0) were enrolled. Individualised homoeopathic medicines were prescribed in centesimal potencies following homoeopathic principles. Subjects were assessed by using Indian scale for Assessment of Autism (ISAA) and Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS) at baseline and every month up to one year. The outcome was analysed using Friedman test. Results: Median scores of ISAA and VSMS at baseline were 132 and 39 which were improved to 35.5 and 56, respectively, at the end of the study. There was a marked reduction in the total ISAA score of 34 patients (statistically significant with p \u3c 0.001). The change of median scores from baseline of social relationship and reciprocity domain of ISAA, Social quotient improved from 41.5 to 10 and 32.8 to 82.7, respectively (p \u3c 0.001). Conclusion: Individualised homoeopathic medicines are useful in improving social interaction in the cases of childhood autism. A controlled clinical trial is suggested as the arena of future research
