Paediatric cholelithiasis treated with homoeopathy: A case report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Gallstones are formed due to the precipitation of components of bile in the lumen of the gallbladder. The incidence of gallstones is extremely rare in children and patients are mostly asymptomatic. However, biliary colic may occur due to reflexive smooth muscle spasm by the stone obstructing the bile duct and may be the presenting symptom in 50% of cases of paediatric cholelithiasis whereas 25% may have non-specific symptoms, 20% may be asymptomatic and 5–10% may have complicated symptoms. The conventional treatment of gallstones is surgery even in children, whereas homoeopathy can provide non-surgical treatment in such cases. Case Summary: A 3-year-old girl child presented with multiple gallstones and recurrent right hypochondrial pain, nausea and vomiting. Surgeons had advised the parents to wait and watch. Phosphorus 30C and Chelidonium majus Q were selected after a detailed case recording and repertorisation, and this treatment gave a positive outcome in 4 months. Evidence-based treatment with individualised homoeopathic medicine thus, seem to help in the cases of paediatric cholelithiasis

    No full text
Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age, with the prevalent clinical symptom of irregular menstruation. Objective: This trial assessed the efficacy of Ferr. met. 30C in restoring the menstrual cycle among PCOS patients. Methods: A randomised, placebo-controlled, single-blind trial was conducted at outpatient departments of Sri Sai Ram Homoeopathy Medical College and Research Centre, Chennai. Patients were randomly allotted to the experimental (Group I - Ferr. met. 30C) and control (Group II - Placebo) groups. Quality of life of patients in both groups was assessed through PCOS Questionnaire scale at baseline and at 6th month. Results: Sixty-five patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to Group I (n = 33) and Group II (n = 32). The menstrual cycle got regularised in 48% of Group I patients and 29% of Group II. Data were also compared to see the menstrual restoration period in both the groups. About 48% of participants in group I and 29% in group II had their menses restored after homoeopathic intervention and the difference between the groups was found to be 1.81 (p \u3c 0.05). Improvement in menstrual cycle before and after intervention for patients in both groups showed a significant difference after the intervention (higher in Group I than Group II), confirming the efficacy of intervention in the experimental group: p \u3c 0.05. Conclusion: This trial suggests that Ferr. met. 30C could be effective in restoring the menstrual cycle in PCOS patients. Rigorous trials and independent replications are warranted

    No full text
Introduction: Loss of all or a portion of the dermis, as well as the epidermis, causes an open sore known as an ulcer. Venous leg ulcers are late signs of venous hypertension and chronic venous insufficiency. Long-term ulcers are difficult to heal and lastly opted for skin grafting and surgery conventionally. This case report provides insight into the treatment of venous ulcer with homoeopathy using the miasmatic approach and helps to provide evidence for further research in this area. Case Summary: A 61-year-old female presented with ulceration near the lateral malleolus of her left leg for the past 6 years. The non-healing ulcer was successfully treated with homoeopathic treatment within 1 year. After case taking, Syphilinum 200C was prescribed considering the miasmatic expression, resulting in symptomatic improvement and Calendula Q externally for an initial 30 days as supportive care followed by Sulphur 200C toward the end of treatment. Homoeopathic medicines led to a remarkable improvement, it was measured using the leg ulcer measurement tool along with photographic evidence and Modified Naranjo Criteria for Homoeopathy. Conclusion: The result was encouraging, exclusively with Homoeopathy medicine; yet, for stronger evidence, more extensive, rigorous research projects are required

Diabetic foot ulcer treated with the homoeopathic medicine Lachesis mutus in millesimal potencies: A case report

    No full text
Introduction: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is the most common neuropathic complication of diabetes. Uncontrolled diabetes and improper foot care lead to serious conditions like DFU from minor injuries. Regular dressing and proper foot care are required for its improvement. Patients are left with no other option than amputation of the limb. Dressing for a longer period seems not convenient and feasible at the patient’s end. DFU also has wet gangrene as one of its major complications. Case Summary: This case report presents a case of a diabetic patient complaining of a foot ulcer for the past nine years, following the bite of a mongoose. On the basis of totality of symptoms, individualised homoeopathic medicine Lachesis mutus was prescribed. The ulcer improved in three months after homoeopathic medication without the use of any external application. The improvement has been depicted in this case report through pictographic evidence. The subjective assessment of the case was done using Outcomes Related to Impact on Daily Living (ORIDL) and Modified Naranjo Criteria for Homoeopathy (MONARCH) was used to evaluate the causal-effect relationship in the case, which showed a score of +3 and +8, respectively. The improvement in the ulcer was also assessed through photographs

Resolution of subdural hygroma with Homoeopathy: A case report

    No full text
Introduction: Subdural hygroma (SDH) is a collection of cerebrospinal fluid in the subdural space which may be idiopathic, traumatic or post-surgical occurring mostly in elderly patients. Case Summary: A 42-year-old female reported an acute complaint of compressing headache. The headache persisted even after initial prescriptions of Ruta graveolens 30C and 200C, which did not alleviate the condition. Further evaluation was done with a computed tomography scan, which revealed left-sided SDH. Tuberculinum 1M was prescribed, but even though the pain subsided, profuse, watery discharge began to ooze from both the ears and nose, which eventually stopped spontaneously. After six months, the headache recurred and Tuberculinum 1M was repeated. The magnetic resonance imaging scan initially showed subdural effusions, dural thickening and mild ischemic white matter changes and after homoeopathic treatment, no abnormality was reported. The management of SDH remains challenging, and documented cases of SDH treated with homoeopathic medicines could contribute to the evidence-based medical literature

The role of Hepar sulphuris calcareum in a case of periorbital cellulitis – A case report

    No full text
Introduction: Periorbital cellulitis is an infection of the soft tissues around the eye anterior to the orbital septum. This condition is very commonly found in the paediatric population but due to certain comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus or immune-compromised conditions, it can be seen in the adult population also. The condition may prove devastating to the eye, causing complete loss of vision or may become life-threatening if the infection spreads to orbits and involves cavernous sinuses in the brain. Case Summary: A 50-year-old diabetic male patient complained of red and lustrous swelling around his right eye, sticky discharge from the eye and increased lachrymation. The swelling was preceded by furuncle on the right zygomatic region of the face 5–6 days before the involvement of the eye. He was diagnosed with periorbital cellulitis and was asked by a local practitioner to go with the course of antibiotics, but the patient was reluctant to take allopathic medication and hence approached for homoeopathic medication. After taking details of his acute episode, Hep. sul. 30C was prescribed 4 hourly. Within 24 h, there was a remarkable reduction seen in the periorbital and ocular congestion and oedema. This case depicts the rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of health if the similimum is accurate

    No full text
Background: The Brazilian Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia (BHP) recommends using glass amber Type I, II, or III as a primary container for storing homoeopathic liquid medicines. Although the glass has advantages, there are some disadvantages, such as fragility, weight, and the presence of silicate particles, which have been described as critical components involved with the generation of silicon microparticles detected in homoeopathic solutions. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the stability of hydroalcoholic solutions of Arsenicum album dynamised in two different vials: class II hydrolytic amber glass and amber high-density polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Materials and Methods: Two potencies of the Arsenicum album, 6C and 30C, were prepared according to BHP. The solutions were stored in glass and PET amber flasks. The stability study was carried out in a climatic chamber according to the conditions described in the Brazilian official compendium for twelve months. During the study, samples were evaluated by density, pH, refractometry, and conductivity. Microbiological purity was evaluated at the beginning and the end of stability study. Results: No statistical differences were observed in the density of samples in both conditions and packages. The pH of all samples remained around 6, and refractometry around 1.363, suggesting their chemical stability. The microbiological assays showed no pathogenic microorganisms after twelve months of storing all samples. Conclusion: The results showed that Arsenicum album 6C and 30C are stable preparations. It can also be concluded that glass bottles are suitable for storing dynamised solutions of Arsenicum album. PET bottles maintained the physicochemical and microbiological stability of the solutions and can be a potential alternative to prepare or store homoeopathic matrices. However, further studies are required to confirm the suitability of PET vials in compounding and storing homoeopathic medicines

    No full text
Background: Homoeopathic mother tinctures are gaining attention for managing diabetes by inhibiting key enzymes in glucose metabolism. Objective: This study aimed to compare popular homoeopathic mother tinctures Abroma augusta Q (AAQ), Cephalandra indica Q (CIQ), Gymnema sylvestre Q (GSQ), Momordica charantia Q (MCQ) and Syzygium jambolanum Q (SJQ) with Metformin (MET) in inhibiting diabetes associated α-amylase and α-glucosidase enzymes. Methods: Mother tinctures AAQ, CIQ, GSQ, MCQ, SJQ and MET of concentrations 10 μL/mL, 50 μL/mL, 100 μL/mL, 250 μL/mL, and 500 μL/mL were assessed through α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory assay. Results: All mother tinctures show significant inhibitory action at p \u3c 0.01. AAQ and GSQ exhibited potent inhibition of both enzymes, with inhibitory percentages ranging from 70.41% (500 μL/mL) to 58.98% (10 μL/mL) for α-amylase and 68% (500 μL/mL) to 43.72% (10 μL/mL) for α-glucosidase and 73.98% (500 μL/mL) to 63.66% (10 μL/mL) for α-amylase and 65.31% (500 μL/mL) to 25.99% (10 μL/mL) for α-glucosidase, respectively. AAQ has an IC50 value of 107.9 μL/mL (α-amylase) and 43.87 μL/mL (α-glucosidase) which makes it evidently, a potent antidiabetic mother tincture. Conclusion: AAQ and GSQ demonstrated significant inhibition of diabetes associated enzymes when compared with MET
