Background: Historically, several homoeopathic medicines are known to have attributed a significant role in the control and management of infectious epidemic diseases. Objectives: This study aimed to compile a list of prospective homoeopathic medicines for the treatment and prophylaxis of the COVID-19 epidemic by conducting a systematic review and statistical analysis of clinical characteristics of this emerging coronavirus disease. Materials and Methods: A\u3e systematic review protocol was developed according to the reporting items of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. Articles for review were selected from PubMed, World Health Organization database, MedRxiV, and BioRxiv. Studies in English and simplified Chinese from December 2019 to March 26 2020 were included. Data on clinical characteristics, laboratory and CT chest results of COVID-19 were extracted and analysed. Several symptoms and their intensity were statistically analysed. Results: Seventy-three studies were included. Amongst COVID-19 patients, fever (119.869 ± 24.425 [95% confidence intervals: 71.149–168.589]), dry cough (91.028 ± 19.555 [52.007–130.050]) and dyspnoea (24.594 ± 5.949 [12.722–36.465]) were the most common symptoms. Leucopenia (16.06 ± 5.07 [5.95–26.18]) in blood, ground-glass opacity (62.23 ± 18.82 [24.74–99.72]), patchy (21.48 ± 12.36 [3.13–46.11]) and consolidation (18.67 ± 9.18 [0.373–36.968]) in the lungs were observed. The selected sign and symptoms were repertorised, which resulted in a list of multiple homoeopathic medicines as potential medicines for COVID-19, led by Arsenic Album (94.59%) and Bryonia alba (91.89%). Conclusion: Considering the current clinical manifestations, this is a pioneer study related to finding a plausible list of homoeopathic medicines that might help the profession in the treatment as well as to select a prophylactic of COVID-19 disease

    Get PDF
Background: Homoeopathic mother tincture Hydrangea arborescens (Hydrang.) is conventionally used for urinary complaints, such as urinary tract infection, renal stones and prostate hypertrophy. However, the mode of its action for annihilation of complaints remains uncertain. This study was designed to investigate in vitro effect of homoeopathic preparations of Hydrang. on urolithiasis (Calcium oxalate [CaOx] crystallisation). Objective: To analyse the role of Hydrang. a, homoeopathic preparation in an in-vitro CAOx crystallisation. Materials and Methods: Spectrophotometric crystallisation assay was carried on and the slopes of nucleation and aggregation phases were calculated using linear regression analysis, and the percentage inhibition exerted by the Hydrang. Q, 6C, 30C and 200C was calculated. Microscopic observations of crystals of CaOx were carried out in the presence and in the absence of Hydrang. Q, 6C, 30C and 200C to support the spectrophotometric crystallisation assay. Results: The crystallisation studies performed indicate Hydrang. to be a potent medicine against CaOx crystallisation both at the level of nucleation and aggregation. Hydrang. Q favours aggregation to a great extent by showing the inhibition of about -15%; while for 6C, 30C and 200C, the percentage inhibition was 13.70%, 42.30% and 14.90%, respectively. This shows inhibitory nature for aggregation, with maximum inhibition shown by Hydrang. 30C potency. Conclusion: The homoeopathic preparations of the Hydrang. inhibit the primary events of stone formation. The findings of the above experiment show the evidence to support the usefulness of Hydrang. in the cases of renal calculi

Physicochemical standardisation of the homoeopathic drug Rumex acetosella and its comparison with another homoeopathic drug, Rumex crispus

    Get PDF
Background: Rumex acetosella, a relatively new drug in the homoeopathic system, is traditionally used for treating inflammation, diabetes and gastrointestinal problems, especially diarrhoea. Objective: The aim of this work is to report physicochemical standardisation of the homoeopathic drug, Rumex acetosella. Further, we propose our simple and economical method to differentiate it with a closely related species, Rumex crispus. Materials and Methods: The physicochemical study measuring several parameters was done. The pH of the mother tincture (MT) and the water extract was measured and compared. Furthermore, the chemical composition of the Rumex acetosella MT were compared with taxonomically closely related Rumex crispus MT by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Results: The results show a strong relationship between the extracting solvent\u27s polarity and its extracting power. A simple TLC study shows a strong correlation between two drugs of the same genus, Rumex, but they can be differentiated by their unique spots. Conclusion: Our study not only provides the physicochemical standards for the drug Rumex acetosella but also shows that a simple analytical technique, a manual TLC can easily be used to distinguish two taxonomically close homoeopathic drugs

    Get PDF
Background: Homoeopathic medicine Arsenicum album (Ars. alb) has been advised by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India based on the recommendations of Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) as a prophylactic/ immune booster for prevention of COVID-19 disease. This paper narrates available evidence from laboratory studies, clinical studies, toxicological studies for Ars. alb. as a prophylactic/ immune booster. Methods: Published literature regarding immuno-modulatory, toxicological and therapeutic effects of the Homoeopathic Medicine Ars. alb. was reviewed. Results: Homoeopathic literature records the use of Ars.alb. for fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of smell, coryza, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, etc. Ars. alb. in its crude form is toxic, acting over numerous systems of the human body. It acts over the macrophages and lymphocytes hindering normal immune response. The toxic effects of crude arsenic are neutralized by ultra-high dilution of arsenic trioxide thus stimulating an immune response, the memory of which retained by the organism helps to prevent the infection. Highly diluted Ars.alb. modulates reactive oxygen species (ROS), and cytokine secretion, decrease in interleukin-6 production in macrophages, which are central mediators of the immune system, wound healing, and body homeostasis. The molecular effects and clinical presentation of the COVID-19 and Ars. alb. are similar over the response to the immune system and clinically is similar to a great extent. Conclusion: Primary evidence suggests possibility of homoeopathic medicine Ars. alb. as a prophylactic immune booster medicine, maintaining an optimal immune response in the human body. Further pre-clinical and clinical studies are warranted

Background: Candida albicans, accounts for more than 75% of all Candidal infections. Apart from its growing prevalence, it is also one of the most resistant strains against antifungal medication. Homoeopathy is an alternative to allopathic medication and has shown inhibiting fungal growth. Objective: This study was to determine effectiveness of homoeopathic tinctures and medications versus allopathic Ketoconazole in growth inhibition and fungicidal properties against in vitro cultures of C. albicans. Materials and Methods: Efficacy of five antifungal agents were tested for inhibiting fungal growth and their fungicidal properties on cultured C. albicans the agents tested were Eucalyptus globulus and Ocimum basilicum in essential oil form, Benzoicum Acidum 30C and Kali Iodatum 30C in tablet form, and compared with the effect of 100 mg Ketoconazole in powder form. Results: In the growth inhibition trial, O. basilicum had the largest zone of inhibition followed by E. globulus following. The ketoconazole group showed similar inhibition rates with Benzoicum Acidum 30C, and Kali Iodatum 30C showed more inhibition than Ketoconazole. The present data suggests that no individual agent had an effective fungicidal effect on C. albicans, only causing a minimal reduction on the surface in the fungal colony. Conclusion: Results indicate that essential oils O. basilicum and E. globulus were most effective in growth inhibition. However, both essential oil and homoeopathic treatment had limited fungicidal properties. This concludes that homoeopathic alternatives can be effective in preventing fungal infections but may be less effective in treatment of a fully developed C. albicans infection

    Get PDF
Introduction: Chronic venous disease is responsible for a great deal of the global disease burden due to its prevalence and socio-economic impact. Non-invasive methods of dealing with the resulting ulcers, that negatively impact mobility, are desirable. Cases Summary: We present five cases of stasis dermatitis and venous ulcers of varying severity, treated with individualised classical homoeopathy showing progress as recorded with the comprehensive classification system for chronic venous disorders (clinical aetiology anatomical pathophysiology) score and venous clinical severity score. There is a need to further investigate scientifically, the role of classical homoeopathy in peripheral vascular diseases

    Get PDF
Background: Intellectual disability (ID) is characterised by below-average intelligence and a lack of skills necessary for day-to-day living. A study was conducted by our institute at a school for students of special needs. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to demonstrate the role of homoeopathic management in ID. Methods: A purposive, non-randomised, self-controlled, pre- and post-intervention study of 25 participants was done. The initial 6 months were the control period, thereafter, the same participants were treated for 18 months, with homoeopathy. Treatment outcomes were assessed using domains of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-V-V. Scores of each domain were observed at 6 months interval and analysed. Results: A statistically significant difference (P \u3c 0.001) was observed in adaptive functioning treatment scores for conceptual domain, social domain and practical domain. It justifies the clinically significant improvement in the features of ID, reflected in all domains of adaptive functioning, cognition, hyperactivity, behavioural dysfunction and communication difficulty. Furthermore, it was seen that the dosage of pharmacological medicines was gradually tapered off in most cases. Conclusion: The study has demonstrated the utility of homoeopathic treatment as an adjuvant in the management of ID, which is reflected through significant improvement in psychosocial adaptation of the subjects and improved their quality of life

Obliteration of ranula with homoeopathic treatment: A case report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Ranula is a soft translucent swelling that occurs in the floor of the mouth usually causing mild discomfort to the patient. Conventional therapeutic modalities range from the injection of sclerosing agents to various surgical techniques. Only a few documented cases with non-surgical management are available on literature search, as surgery is considered to be the mainstay for this clinical condition. Case Summary: This is a case of a female child with a painless, cystic swelling in the right side of the floor of the mouth of 3-month duration and another smaller painless cystic swelling on the inner side of the right lower lip. Clinical diagnosis reveals the cystic mass in the floor of the mouth as a simple ranula. After individualising the case, homoeopathic medicine Ambra grisea 30 was prescribed, and within 2–3 months, ranula obliterated. The other smaller cystic swelling also disappeared simultaneously

Individualized homoeopathic treatment of phobic anxiety disorders – A case series

    Get PDF
Introduction: Phobic anxiety disorders (PAD) are common distressing and disabling disorders that reduce the quality of life of an individual. Clinical trials of phobic disorders in conventional treatment are not yet substantiated with too many positive results. Homoeopathy is a well established therapeutic system with potential relevance to psychiatry but has a limited database and its effectiveness in certain disorders such as Phobic disorders is yet to be explored. Cases of phobias, which have been cured in routine homoeopathic practice remain anecdotal. This case series generates preliminary evidence for the usefulness of homoeopathy in phobic disorders. Well planned research studies with calculated sample size and suitable study designs are necessary to corroborate the evidence. Cases Summary: A series of five case reports of PAD which were treated with homoeopathic medicines in OPD of National Homoeopathy Research Institute in Mental Health, Kottayam are presented here. Cases which were assessed for severity using American Psychiatric Association (APA) Severity Measures for Phobia Adult at baseline and with a 1-year follow-up at periodic monthly interval are reported. Their baseline and monthly scores were analyzed, and results are summarized. The mean APA Phobia Severity measure value of the five cases i.e., 35 at baseline reduced to 0 (Asymptomatic) in an average duration of 8 months. The improvement continued steadily up to 12 months. Results point out preliminary evidence for utility of Homoeopathy in Phobic disorders and stimulate for further research in this area
