Background: Individualisation is the process of arriving at the image of the patient for the selection of remedy. The customary way of individualisation of the patient is through the construction of totality of symptoms. The little explored area in Homoeopathy is individualisation solely based on personality characteristics. Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the effect of individualised homoeopathic medicine administered based on totality of symptoms vis-à-vis personality in patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis. Methods: The observational study includes 60 clinically diagnosed cases of osteoarthritis knee, of which 30 cases were administered the homoeopathic medicine selected on the basis of totality of symptoms and thirty cases based on personality. Randomisation was done using computer-generated numbers. The personality of the patients was assessed through the 44-item Big-Five Inventory. A self-made tool, transcribing trait items to rubrics of the homoeopathic repertory, was prepared. The knee osteoarthritis scores on physical function, pain and patient global estimate in Routine Assessment of Patient Index Data 3 (RAPID3) sheet, before and after treatment, were compared. Results: The paired difference mean of RAPID3 in totality of symptom-based administration was 4.06 and for personality-based administration was 1.92 with a standard deviation of 3.91 and 3.29, respectively. The test result is statistically significant at 0.05 level (P \u3c 0.05). Conclusion: Administration of individualised Homoeopathy medicine based on totality of symptoms is found to be more effective as compared to individualised Homoeopathy medicine based on personality amongst patients suffering from osteoarthritis knee

Homoeopathy for infantile spasms: An open label, single arm, clinical trial

    Get PDF
Background: Treatment of infantile spasms (ISs) with allopathic medicines along with homeopathy is poorly understood in context with the seizure profile, psychomotor outcome, and electroencephalogram (EEG) changes. Objectives: The objective of the study was to evaluate the role of homeopathic treatment in seizure control, psychomotor development, and EEG changes in patients of IS. Materials and Methods: An open label, single-arm, clinical trial was conducted. Patients found eligible were enrolled (n = 30) and given individualized homeopathic intervention along with conventional medicine for 3 months. Follow-up assessment was done weekly based on 7 points: Sense of well-being, changes in cognitive behavior, changes in activity level, changes in seizure ictal period, changes in hypsarrhythmia, changes in speech, and gross and fine motor development. Results: About 76.66% (n = 23) of patients had improved clinically (sense of well-being, activity level, and seizure ictal period). Cognitive behavior improved in 50% (n = 9), while hypsarrhythmia improved in 16.66% (n = 5) of patients. Speech improved in 13.33% (n = 4), while gross and fine motor skills improved in 21% (n = 4) and 16% (n = 4), respectively. Calcarea carbonica (n = 4, 13.33%), Arsenic album (n = 4, 13.33%), Causticum (n = 4, 13.33%), Lycopodium (n = 3, 10%), and Nux vomica (n = 2, 6.66%) were frequently used medicines. Conclusion: Homeopathy plays a positive role in seizures in IS patients. More multicentric, randomized trials are required to make conclusions

Elderly patient with post-herpetic neuralgia treated with homoeopathic medicine: A case report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most troublesome complication of herpes zoster (HZ). It often occurs in elderly and immunocompromised persons. PHN is a chronic neuropathic pain that can persist months to years after HZ rashes have healed. The persisting pain causes physical and psychological distress and negatively impacts the quality of life. The conventional method of treatment (CMT) is often only partially effective. In patients with inadequate response, or intolerance to current conventional treatments for pain relief, homoeopathy may be considered. Case Summary: A 64-year-old woman presented with severe neuralgic pain on the right upper chest wall and upper arm with a recent history of HZ. The acute neuralgic pain was accompanied with HZ rashes. Within 1 month of CMT, HZ healed, but neuralgic pain persisted. Homoeopathic medicines Hypericum perforatum and Sulphur were prescribed as per the totality of symptoms and individualisation, which relieved PHN (assessed by ‘Visual Analogue Scale’ [VAS]). It was accompanied with relief in associated symptoms and improvement in functional daily activities. The causal attribution of the improvement was assessed using the Modified Naranjo Criteria. This case report suggests that homoeopathic intervention may be the choice of treatment for relief of pain of PHN along with improvement in the psychological distress and quality of life

Homoeopathic management of wrist ganglion: Case series

    Get PDF
Introduction: Ganglion cysts are soft tissue swellings occurring most commonly in the hand or wrist. Studies have reported 8%–50% of them resolve spontaneously in adults within 2 years approximately. Cases Summary: We present three cases of wrist ganglion treated successfully with individualized homoeopathic medicines; the results were evident within few weeks. Individual curative response of a homoeopathic medicine in each case was assessed through Modified Naranjo Criteria for Homoeopathy-Causal Attribution Inventory, which further elucidated role of constitutional treatment in homoeopathy

National Convention on World Homoeopathy Day – A conference report

    Get PDF
Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy organized a scientific convention on the World Homoeopathy Day on 10th and 11thApril, 2021 to commemorate the 266th birth anniversary of Dr Christian Fredrich Samuel Hahnemann at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, India. The theme of the conference was ‘Homoeopathy – Roadmap for Integrative Medicine’. There were oral presentations and a panel discussion during the convention organized in the hybrid mode, with participants and presenters attending the convention either physically, or remotely through video link. Recommendations to develop a roadmap for Homoeopathy for integrative care were also proposed during the convention. Integration is not simply co-location of all systems but a wholesome clinical approach for the public health benefit where systems have known limitations. Specific strategic actions are needed at research, practice and education levels to promote integrative care with Homoeopathy as a key contributor

Evaluation of Hypericum perforatum mother tincture as an antigingivitis agent in comparison with Chlorhexidine: A randomised controlled trial

    Get PDF
Background: Homoeopathic medicine Hypericum perforatum (Hyper.) has antimicrobial, wound healing and anti-inflammatory activity. It has been used as an analgesic postextraction, for nerve pain, burning mouth syndrome singly, or in combination with other Homoeopathy medications. Objective: Evaluation of the efficacy of Hyper. Q in reducing dental plaque and gingival inflammation. Materials and Methods: Three hundred and eighteen participants with chronic gingivitis (probing depth ≤ 3 mm) and bleeding gums were recruited and allocated randomly into three groups (n = 106 each): Group A (saline mouthwash), Group B (Hyper.) and Group C (Chlorhexidine [CHX]). Clinical parameters: Plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), sulcus bleeding index (SBI) and oral hygiene index simplified (OHIS) were measured at baseline, first, third and sixth month. Results: All the three groups showed a statistically significant reduction in the PI, GI, SBI and OHIS (P \u3c 0.05) at 3 months. Intergroup comparison showed significant reduction in PI, GI, SBI and OHIS (P \u3c 0.05) in Group C compared to Groups A and B. Group B showed a statistically significant reduction in all clinical parameters when compared to Group A (P \u3c 0.05) after 3 months. At 6 months, all the groups showed statistically significant reduction (P \u3c 0.05) in all the clinical parameters; however, intergroup comparison did not show significant difference (P \u3e 0.05). Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that the use of Hyper. Q as mouthwash significantly reduces plaque and gingival inflammation as compared to saline as mouthwash. However, CHX was found better than Hyper. Future research on use of Hyper. Q, dosage, substantiality and antimicrobial properties is warranted for its potential clinical use
