Endometriotic cyst and fibrocystic disease of the breast treated with individualised homoeopathy – A case report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Endometriosis is one of the benign gynaecological disorders in childbearing women, characterised by the presence of functioning endometrial tissue outside the uterine mucosa. Fibrocystic disease of the breast is the most common and benign lesion among women of reproductive age group seeking medical advice for breast problems during a lifetime. It is characterised by hyperproliferation of connective tissue or fibrosis, which is followed by facultative epithelial proliferation in the breast tissues. Case Summary: A case of a left endometriotic ovarian cyst with multiple cystic lesions in the right breast in a 36-year-old patient successfully treated with individualised homoeopathic medicine is reported. She had severe cyclic lower abdominal pain for more than 7 years, and conventional analgesics and even surgical procedures could not afford relief. Homoeopathic treatment was started with Silicea based on the totality of symptoms and repertorisation and later switched to Conium maculatum as an anti-miasmatic remedy, which showed disappearance of the left endometriotic cyst and reduction in the size of cystic lesion in the right breast with general improvement. The Modified Naranjo Criteria were used to assess causal attribution to the prescribed medicine in this case. Assessment of pain was done using a visual analogue scale. This evidence-based case reported according to the HOM-CASE guidelines suggested that individualised homoeopathic medicines can be used as a useful, safe and non-invasive mode of treatment for ovarian endometriotic cyst, associated with fibrocystic disease of the breast

Individualised homoeopathic approach for simple endometrial hyperplasia presenting with post-menopausal bleeding – A case report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Post-menopausal bleeding (PMB) is defined as bleeding per vagina occurring after 1 year of amenorrhoea in a menopausal woman who is not receiving hormonal therapy. Case Summary: This is a case report of a nulliparous woman aged 61 years, having PMB due to simple endometrial hyperplasia (EH) after 10 years of menopause. She was treated with individualised homoeopathic medicines. Trans-abdominal USG of lower abdomen showed complete resolution of hyperplastic endometrium from hyperplastic state (14 mm) to normal thickness (4 mm) after treatment for 11 months. Possible causal attribution of changes was assessed by Modified Naranjo Criteria (Score-10 out of 13). Follow-up over a period of 1 year of treatment, reflected no recurrence of symptoms, thus demonstrating a positive role of individualised homoeopathic treatment in simple EH having PMB

Individualized homoeopathy in the treatment of gallbladder polyp with multiple comorbidities: A case report

    Get PDF
Introduction: Gallbladder polyps are usually asymptomatic and detected incidentally during abdominal ultrasonography (USG). Their presence, irrespective of size, is considered an indication of surgical removal. Case Summary: A 44-year-old hypertensive and diabetic male presented with severe pain in the left lower back for 1 month. Abdominal USG revealed the presence of a 4-mm size gallbladder polyp, mild hydronephrosis of the left kidney, two left renal microliths, 5.2-mm calculus in the left vesicoureteric junction, Grade-I fatty liver and Grade-I prostatomegaly. The patient was advised for cholecystectomy, but he opted for homoeopathic treatment to avoid surgery. At the first visit, homoeopathic medicine Calcarea fluorica was prescribed and the patient was followed up periodically for 1 year. His back pain reduced within 15 days. The patient was assessed for subjective improvement through the ‘outcome related to impact on daily living’ scale. USG after 10 months of treatment revealed that the gallbladder polyp was not present and his liver, kidney and ureteric functions returned to normal as per investigations. Modified Naranjo Criteria for Homoeopathy score (+8 on the ‘−6–+13’ scale) assesses if the improvement of the patient can be attributed to the homoeopathic treatment provided. This case report is presented to document the scope of individualized homoeopathy in the treatment of gallbladder polyp with multiple comorbidities pathologies. Further, documentation of consistent results from a large number of similar cases is warranted

Reply to Hahnemann\u27s position on vaccination: A call to rethink.

    Get PDF
There is a debate on the merits of modern vaccination in relation to Hahnemann’s position regarding this practice in his time. The authors of a recent Letter to the Editor argue that Hahnemann was in favour of vaccination and that we need to assess vaccination objectively. I agree with both of these positions, but disagree as to the details regarding what is meant by these two conclusions. I argue that Hahnemann made clear that vaccination did not provide immunity, and never can. I further argue that there are better alternatives to vaccination in terms of boosting the immune system, and that there are also remedies that provide actual immunity

Homoeopathic pathogenetic trial of Mentha piperita L.: A multi-centric, double-blind, randomised and placebo-controlled trial

    Get PDF
Introduction: Mentha piperita L, a lesser-known and partly proved drug in homoeopathy, is used extensively as a herbal medicine. Objective: The objective of this study is to elicit the pathogenetic response of Mentha piperita in comparison to placebo. Materials and Methods: A multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled and randomised clinical trial was carried out at three centres with 46 relatively healthy provers. After randomisation, 32 provers were given verum in 6C, 12C, 30C and 200C potencies and in the placebo group,14 provers were administered identical, un-medicated globules. All the changes were recorded by the provers and elaborated by proving masters. The data were finally processed at proving-cum-data processing cell. Results: Out of the 32 provers of the Verum group, 22 reported 61 symptoms, whereas 24 symptoms were reported by seven provers in the placebo group. The majority of the symptoms were produced in the sphere of the locomotor system, followed by the gastro-intestinal system beside other systems. Altogether, ten new Grade I symptoms were identified, while 11 symptoms were similar to those found in the previous literature. Conclusion: Mentha piperita revealed a significant pathogenetic response in this trial which verifies its previously observed symptoms. Among the newly developed symptoms, two symptoms showed opposite character when compared to the previous literature. Also, statistically significant difference was found in differential eosinophil count in the verum group pre-post intervention. These are the findings that need to be clinically verified to enhance the scope of their clinical use

Lycopodium clavatum as an inhibitor of monosodium urate crystallisation in gout: An in vitro study

    Get PDF
Background: Hyperuricaemia plays a significant role in the development and pathogenesis of several metabolic and systemic disorders including metabolic syndrome, hypertension, stroke and atherosclerosis. Lycopodium clavatum is the most widely used drug in homoeopathy for treating hyperuricaemia and gout. However, its mechanism of action in reducing serum uric acid remains uncertain. Objective: The objective of the study was to study the potential role of homoeopathic preparation of Lycopodium clavatum in different potencies on monosodium urate crystallisation in vitro. Methods: Spectrophotometric crystallisation assay was carried out on a stock solution of 5 ml of uric acid after its preparation. The time course of the optical density was measured in a standard solution and values were measured every 5 min after agitation with cyclo-vortex mixer. The optical density values were also measured in the homoeopathic preparation of Lycopodium clavatum in different potencies with same method. Inhibiting effect of this medicine was found from graphs by measuring slope of nucleation and aggregation from optical density value and the percentage inhibition exerted by the proteins was calculated. Results: Spectrophotometric analysis showed all potencies of Lycopodium clavatum inhibited aggregation of monosodium urate crystals with a maximum inhibition at 200C and 1M potency. Conclusion: We found that the homoeopathic medicine Lycopodium clavatum could be effective in inhibiting the formation of monosodium urate crystals in vitro and also causes the dissolution of crystals, especially in high potencies. Further studies are required to understand the exact mechanism of action

    Get PDF
Background: Total cholesterol content of erythrocyte membranes plays a critical role in atherosclerotic plaque progression and instability. Several homoeopathic medicines are known to have a significant role in the control of hyperlipidaemia. Colchicum autumnale is a plant remedy used mainly for gout, but also for hyperlipidaemia. Objectives: This is a study to assess the in vitro anti-cholesterol action of the Colchicum autumnale (Colch. at.) on the erythrocyte membrane. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted using a hyperlipidaemic blood sample which was divided into eight parts. Six different potencies of Colch. at. were tested, and two controls, one negative and another positive were used. Cholesterol was estimated using Liberman Burchard reagent and spectrophotometry. Results: In a hyperlipidemic blood sample, the range of reduction of cholesterol concentration was from 18.20% to 19.16%. The 6C potency removed 18.24% of cholesterol,12C potency removed 18.50% cholesterol,30C potency removed 19.02% cholesterol,200C potency removed 19.68% cholesterol and 10M potency removed 19.16% cholesterol. The maximum effect was seen in 1M potency where the reduction was 19.68 %. Conclusion: This study suggests that the Colchicum autumnale might be useful for the management of hypercholesterolemia
