Three apex bodies, namely the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy, the National Commission for Homoeopathy and the National Institute of Homoeopathy, jointly organised a scientific convention on the occasion of the World Homoeopathy Day to commemorate the 267th birth anniversary of the founder of Homoeopathy, Dr Christian Fredrich Samuel Hahnemann which was held on 9 and 10 April 2022 at New Delhi on the theme ‘Homoeopathy: People’s Choice for Wellness’. Over the 2 days, scientific sessions and interactive meets were held. This convention was an opportunity to review the developments in the field of Homoeopathy and formulate future strategies for the advancements of Homoeopathy to make homoeopathy the first choice for people for wellness
Effectiveness of homoeopathy for the treatment and management of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis in women: A case series
Introduction: Idiopathic Granulomatous Mastitis (IGM) is a rare, debilitating, chronic inflammatory disease of the breast, occurring in women of the child-bearing age, which can clinically, and radiologically mimic abscess, tubercular infection or breast cancer. Homoeopathy can treat the disease by addressing its multifactorial origin, given its holistic approach. The paper presents a case series of 11 patients of IGM treated with classical homoeopathy in place of conventional methods.
Case Summary: After exclusion of differential diagnosis of inflammatory breast lesions by radiology, and biopsy, the patients were given individualised homoeopathic treatment. Common symptoms were pain, single or multiple lumps, abscesses, sinuses, ulcers and discharge in various patients. Descriptive statistics, clinical observation and patient’s feedback were used for analysis. 11patients were followed up for a median period of 24 months. All 11 patients experienced subsidence of the lumps with no recurrence and general improvement in health, without any conventional medication or surgical intervention. The initial experience of resolution of IGM with homoeopathic treatment is encouraging. For an evidence-based evaluation of the results, larger numbers of case studies are required. The key to positive outcome of the case series was meticulous follow up of each patient and intervention with acute homoeopathic remedies, as indicated
Homoeopathic management of infertility due to blockage of fallopian tube – A case series
Introduction: Infertility is characterised by the failure to establish a clinical pregnancy after 12 months of regular and unprotected sexual intercourse. The prevalence of infertility in the general population is about 9–18%. Out of several causes of infertility, the tubal factor plays a role in 15.4% of cases. Homoeopathy is a gentle and effective mode of treatment. A few previous studies indicate that homoeopathy is a useful method of treatment for the treatment of infertility cases. Cases Summary: Four cases of female infertility due to blockage of fallopian tubes treated at Dhabaleswar Homeo Clinic, Cuttack, are presented herewith. The cases were treated successfully with individualised homoeopathic medicines. After the treatment, all patients conceived normally and delivered healthy babies. The medicines used were Sepia, Sulphur and Medorrhinum in centesimal potencies. Difficult cases of infertility with fallopian tube blockage are thus treatable and women can attain pregnancy with the help of homoeopathic treatment
Homoeopathic management of polycystic ovarian syndrome – A case series
Introduction: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in females of the reproductive age group. It is characterised by menstrual irregularities, enlarged ovaries, infertility, high levels of male hormones, excess hair on the face and body, acne and obesity. PCOS can result from abnormal function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Women with PCOS have an increased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and endometrial cancer.
Case Summary: A case series of seven PCOS patients treated with indicated constitutional homoeopathic medicines at Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, New Delhi, India, is presented here. Overall improvement was assessed by improvement in signs and symptoms like restoration of regular menstrual cycles, weight loss, and disappearance of ovarian cysts, as evident in ultrasonography reports, and improved scores of the integrative Medicine Outcome Scale (IMOS) scale and quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) . The resolution of cysts in the ovaries, along with marked symptomatic improvement and improvement in quality of life in all seven patients, shows that homoeopathy has a potential for treating PCOS. Gradation of IMOS scale reduced to 1 in all seven patients after treatment showing complete recovery. One patient, who had presented with infertility, conceived during the treatment. Homoeopathic medicines such as Natrum muriaticum, Lycopodium clavatum, Silicea terra, Pulsatilla nigricans and Sepia were found most useful
Homoeopathy in the management of chronic kidney disease – A narrative review
Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the third fastest-growing cause of death around the world and is projected to become the fifth most common cause of years of life lost worldwide by 2040.
Objective: This review was done to explore the strengths of homoeopathy in the management of CKD through pre-clinical, clinical and anecdotal evidence.
Methods: A search was made for homoeopathic management of CKD in PubMed, Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy e-library, AYUSH Research Portal, EMBASE and Google Scholar. The basic search terms included ‘Homoeopathy’ or ‘homoeopathic drugs’, ‘ESRD’, ‘CRF’, ‘CKD’ and ‘Bright’s disease’. No rigid inclusion criteria was kept due to the paucity of literature on this subject concerning homoeopathy; hence, all studies were included in this review. Further, literature review, through homoeopathic repertories, was also conducted for the anecdotal evidence of frequently used homoeopathic drugs used in the management of CKD.
Results: Through an online search, 11 studies were found related to the subject which included two randomised controlled trials (RCTs), eight case series/case reports and one pre-clinical study. Two RCTs focussed on symptoms/signs due to CKD such as pruritus, asthenia, lethargy and headache with positive effects. The evidence generated through case series/reports, though useful for hypothesis-generating studies, was found to have poor reporting quality.
Conclusion: At present, the available evidence towards the benefits of homoeopathy in CKD is weak. Further well-designed studies are warranted
Polycystic ovarian syndrome with obsessive-compulsive disorder treated with homoeopathy: A case report
Introduction: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a multisystem endocrine disorder which is gradually on a rise due to lifestyle changes and increased stress. Case Summary: A case of 29-year-old female suffering from PCOS showed improvement with homoeopathic treatment. The improvement was evident from the hormonal assays and ultrasonography reports of the patient. This case report suggests that individualised homoeopathic medicines are effective in the treatment of PCOS
Homeopathic management of Reinke’s edema in a non-smoker: A case report
Introduction: Reinke’s edema, also known as polypoid degeneration of vocal cords, is a bilateral, symmetrical swelling of the whole of the membranous part of the vocal cords. Surgery has been the mainstay of treatment for Reinke’s edema. Thus, patients are often left with practically no non-invasive treatment option. Case Summary: This is the case of a 40-year-old male, teacher, who presented with hoarseness of voice for 1 year and opted for homeopathic treatment when he was advised surgery. A rapid improvement in the symptoms, as well as significant objective improvement as confirmed with video laryngoscopy. The results were seen within 3 months of individualized homeopathic treatment. One-year follow-up revealed complete resolution of edema in both vocal cords. This case report shows a promising, non-invasive intervention option for such cases, wherein radical surgery and consequent prolonged voice therapy could be avoided
Homoeopathic medicine Gettysburg water in osteoarthritis: A case series
Introduction: Rheumatism alludes to various painful medical conditions which influence joints, bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles. It is also called musculoskeletal disease which is portrayed by pain and a gradual diminishing in the range of motion and function, in one or more areas of the musculoskeletal structure. In a few specific diseases, there are indications of inflammation, swelling, redness and warmth in the influenced zones like in osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Cases Summary: Four cases of Osteoarthritis were treated with Gettysburg water (Get.) as a potentised homoeopathic medicine. Each case was followed up with clinical observation and reported according to the criteria of the HOM-CASE guidelines. Assessment of homoeopathic treatment and its effect was carried out using the visual analogue scale (VAS) during every visit. Improvement in all cases was evident from the reduction of pain in the affected joints and relief in other associated symptoms within 2–6 months of treatment. VAS scores for the cases ranged from 8 to 4 in all cases. Complaints associated with chronic OA were relieved by potentised Get. This case series has shown promising outcomes and a further high-quality clinical trial is needed for the establishment of effectiveness data for the said medicine
Homoeopathic treatment of a diabetic COVID-19 patient with the complication of bronchitis and pleural effusion - A case report
Introduction: COVID-19 is a novel SARS-CoV-2 disease that has caused a worldwide pandemic. It is highly contagious and produces severe acute respiratory syndrome. Many homoeopathic medicines have been suggested for treatment of COVID cases and reports have also been published. Case Summary: The present case report is of a 61-year-old COVID-positive, male, presenting with complications such as bronchitis and pleural effusion. He was treated for COVID-19 with a suitable homoeopathic medicine, based on the totality of symptoms, while the patient continued his regular regime of conventional medicine for diabetes mellitus and hypertension. The indicated remedy led to immediate relief of the symptoms, especially chest pain, along with a marked improvement in the laboratory investigations. The Modified Naranjo Criteria score after treatment was 8, which explicitly shows the positive causal attribution of the individualised homoeopathic medicine, Phosphorus, in this case. Homoeopathic treatment has shown favourable results in this case and demonstrates the scope of Homoeopathy in infectious cases
