Background: Peru is considered the third largest exporter of mango in the world and Piura is the first mango producing region representing 68% of the national production; however, the fungus Lasiodiplodia theobromae has been associated with dieback and the presence of cankers in mango cultivation, reducing fruit production and quality. Objective: To evaluate sustainable alternatives for in vitro and in vivo control of L. theobromae in mango, using products based on copper sulfate pentahydrate and a liquid biofertilizer. Methodology: Treatments were applied: T0 (Control), T1 (Vacun-Q organic 0.35 mL100 mL-1), T2 (Vacun-Q organic 0.175 mL 100 mL-1), T3 (Phyton 27® 0.35 mL100 mL-1), T4 (Phyton 27® 0.175 mL100 mL-1), T5 (Biol 10%) and T6 (Biol 20%). Radial growth and mycelial growth inhibition percentage (GIP) of the pathogen were evaluated in the in vitro phase with poisoned media, and necrotic area progression was assessed in the in vivo phase on mango leaves. Results: At 72 h after inoculation, treatments T3, T5 and T6 showed the lowest radial growth of L. theobromae, statistically equal to each other and inferior to the control that completed its development in the Petri dish; likewise, they showed 100% GIP. Five days after inoculation of mango leaves, T5 and T6 presented the smallest necrotic areas with 1.44 cm2 and 1.61 cm2 respectively, followed by T4 with 1.64 cm2 and T2 with 1.69 cm2 compared to the control with 2.05 cm2. Implications: In view of the constant restrictions of active molecules, sustainable and innocuous alternatives for humans and the environment are sought for the control of L. theobromae. Conclusion: Treatments T5 and T6 based on liquid biofertilizers showed to be effective in the in vitro and in vivo control of L. theobromae

Background: Forest conversion to other land use types lead to changes in soil physico-chemical properties and a reduction in soil fertility. Although forest conversion is extensively recognized to alter soil properties, the influence on distribution of soil phosphorus (P) fractions and abundance and diversity of soil biota is not well explored. Objective: To assess the effects of converting undisturbed natural forest to plantation forest (cypress), grazed pastures and potato fields on soil phosphorus (P) fractions and abundance and diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in Nyandarua County, Kenya. Methodology: Transects laid out in triplicate were established in each land use type. In potato fields and grazed pastures, transects measured 50 m with three sampling points established 15 m apart along each transect, each point measuring 1 m² divided into 25 grids with each grid being 400 cm². Transect length was increased to 150 m in forest sites due to relatively larger size of the area studied and sampling points were placed at 50 m apart, each point measuring 25 m² and divided into 1² m grids. Soil and plant samples were randomly collected from sampling points and were used to determine chemical properties, soil P fractions and AMF spore examination. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Soil chemical properties were significantly (p<0.001) higher in natural forest compared to potato fields, grazed pasture and cypress forest. On the contrary, readily labile and moderately labile P was higher in fields cultivated with potato (125.3 mg and 258.2 mg P kg-1, respectively) than in natural forest (51.1 mg and 95.3 mg P kg-1) and cypress forest (36.4 mg and 82.7 mg P kg-1, respectively). However, non-labile P was higher in natural forest (599.1 mg P kg-1) and lower in cypress forest (251.3 mg kg-1). Of the ten AMF genera identified, only Glomus and Acaulospora were significantly (p<0.01) affected by land use change, where they were more abundant in fields cultivated with potato than the other three land use types. Land use type did not significantly influence diversity and richness in AMF. However, AMF composition varied across the land use types. Implication: Land use change may negatively affect soil chemical properties, enhance redistribution of soil P, and change AMF community composition, and this could have long-term implications on soil fertility. Conclusion: Land use change from natural ecosystems to croplands, grazed pastures and tree plantations alter soil chemical properties, AMF composition and spore abundance, and redistribute soil P fractions by increasing labile P and reducing non-labile P fractions showing that the type of land use chosen significantly influence soil physical and chemical properties and soil biodiversity.

Background. The Conventional use of henequen (Agave fourcroydes), has mainly focused on the use of the leaves for the production of fiber. However, there are other components such as the stem (“pineapple”), the spines, and the by-product of fiber generation (leaf juice) in which we should pay attention to. Objective. To provide a systematic analysis of the biotechnological overview from those investigations where the potential of each of the structural components of A. fourcroydes is being studied. Methodology. A systematic review of the literature was carried out, based on the PRISMA protocol (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses), search for information was carried out in the most prominent databases (Redalyc, SciELO, Scopus, Elsevier, EBSCO, and Google Academic, using A. fourcroydes as the main keyword, using inclusion and later exclusion criteria according to the literature found, in the period from 1990 to 2022, which allowed a broader perspective on this crop and its biotechnological importance. Main findings. In the bibliographic review more information was found on the applications of the plant in an integral way, so that bioactive compounds such as fructans, flavonoids, and sterols can be obtained from the henequen stem, which can be incorporated into animal and human diets, while ethanol has been obtained from the juice of the leaves and the development of that of new materials using the fiber in a native and modified way to obtain fiber-reinforced mortars for its sustainable application in the construction industry. On the other hand, contributions were found on promising alternatives for the use of crops such as modified fibers, and combined with other compounds (composites) for the mechanical reinforcement of new materials. Implications. The literature consulted allows us to report that henequen (A. fourcroydes) is not only cultivated in the Yucatan Peninsula, but also in other regions such as the State of Tamaulipas, Mexico, where its use and commercial exploitation has not well documented. Conclusion. The bibliographical review allows us to deduce that the obtaining of new henequen compounds would revalue their integral use and use in different industries.Antecedentes.

Background. The vegetative material for in vitro establishment of avocado explants is from the field, for this reason, the proportion of contamination, oxidation and mortality of explants is elevated, therefore we are looking for alternatives to decreased. Objective. To evaluate concentrations of alternative products for disinfestation in avocado explants cv Duke 7, and decrease oxidation with the addition of L-cysteine in the in vitro establishment. Methodology. The products used were: peroxyacetic acid (AP), chlorine dioxide (DC), and quaternary ammonium salts (ACS), in three concentrations. 54 explants were used in each treatment, and placed in culture medium for establishment, evaluating contamination (%) and oxidation (%). Two weeks later, 50% of viable explants from each treatment were immersed in L-cysteine (100 mgL-1) and placed in a culture medium for multiplication, the rest was placed a in multiplication medium containing L-cysteine; only oxidation was evaluated (%). Contaminated explants were isolated, identified, and characterized fungi and bacteria. Results. The best results of the disinfestation were with ACS with 3.7% contamination, without oxidation. Regarding the use of L-cysteine (100 mgL-1), the lowest percentage of oxidation (47%) was obtained when immersed in a cysteine solution. Three genera of fungi were identified: Aspergillus (3), Penicillium (1) and Cladosporium (1), and Agrobacterium as a bacterium. Implications. With the proposed methodology, we can continue with the following stages of in vitro culture, to establish methodologies for budding, growth, and rooting of avocado clonal rootstocks. Conclusions. The use of ACS and cysteine in solution reduces both contamination and oxidation of explants, but it is necessary to modify concentrations and exposure times in the disinfestation protocol, in addition to identifying even the genus the microorganisms found.Antecedentes. Background. Vanilla planifolia is a species of commercial and cultural importance. However, its growth and development could be affected by the increase in temperature caused by climate change. In contrast, V. pompona and V. insignis are wild species with potential use as aromatic species and they show greater tolerance to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Objective. To determine the effect of temperature on the development of roots and shoots of V. planifolia, V. pompona and V. insignis under controlled conditions. Methodology. Cuttings of approximately 20 cm with two nodes were grown at 25, 32, 35 and 38 °C under controlled conditions, with a relative humidity of 100%, for six weeks. To evaluate cutting development, the number of roots produced was recorded, as well their length, their growth rate and their diameter. Likewise, the number of shoots generated, their length, growth rate and diameter were also counted. The experimental design was completely random, and the data were analyzed using Tukey post hoc analysis of variance (P < 0.05). Results. The increase in temperature affected the promotion and root growth in V. planifolia, which showed the greatest length at 25 °C (20.64 ± 0.26 cm) and the lowest value at 35 °C (1.22 ± 0.49 cm), contrary to V. insignis, where the increase in temperature at 35 °C favored root elongation (4.76 ± 0.07 cm), while the lowest growth was observed at 25 °C (1.74 ± 0.13 cm). V. pompona did not present significant differences in root growth at the three temperatures evaluated. Similarly, the increase in temperature showed a distinct influence on the promotion and growth of the shoot. V. planifolia only produced shoots at 32 °C (8.4 ± 0.4 cm) and V. pompona generated them at 32 and 35 °C, being those of greater length at 35 °C (3.3±0.13 cm) and did not produce at 25 °C; while V. insignis showed the highest shoot growth at 25 °C (7.22 ± 0.2 cm) and the lowest at 32 °C (6.56 ± 0.12). At 38 °C, 100% mortality was observed in the three species. Implications. The growth of roots and shoots of V. planifolia are affected by an increase in temperature above 32 °C, therefore, conservation and genetic improvement programs are needed that could start from the qualities that V. pompona and V. insignis showed. Conclusion. Temperature ranges between 25 and 35 °C have a differential effect on the promotion and growth of roots and shoots for the species V. planifolia, V. insignis and V. pompona.Antecedentes.

Background. The Fan of Ibagué is one of the most important livestock and agricultural regions in the country, which faces a sustainability crisis and whose origins can be a critical point for understanding it. Objective. To understand the historical processes of settlement of the Ibague fan and the development of the rice and livestock industries in the region. Methodology. This historical perspective is constructed from agroecology, a transdisciplinary science that seeks to understand the multidimensional nature of current environmental problems. Qualitative analysis is thus relevant at this point since it provides means to analyze ecosystem transformations and the consequences derived from contemporary production practices. Oral testimonies by diverse actors (producers, members of institutions, traders, researchers in the region) were gathered through semi-structured interviews after field visits and later analyzed in the search for agricultural production milestones and their role in the ecological transformation of the region. The findings were contrasted with written sources and documentary records such as agricultural censuses, institutional files, and fieldwork evidence. Results. Four crucial events in the local agricultural development of the Ibagué Fan were reported: the extensive livestock farming around 1900, which lead to the consolidation of four generations of producers; the construction of irrigation channels which benefited large-scale rice production in the area by the mid-twentieth century; the combination of rice production, livestock farming and all its associated crops; and finally, the introduction of sustainable livestock farming projects. Implications. Historical analyzes show the need to know the perspective of the actors involved in the development of agriculture and livestock in the region over the years; these milestones are fundamental for the development of public policies that recognize the historical, social and geographical particularities. Conclusions. The history of the colonization of the Colombian territory from the seventeenth century was characterized by the introduction, adaptation, and expansion of the livestock farming culture, together with the populating of the territories near the plains of the Magdalena river, as it was the main connecting route in the region.Antecedentes.

Background: L-carnitine is a lipid metabolism enhancer and a potent antioxidant that prevents oxidative damage and improves cryotolerance of bovine embryos. Objective: To determine the effect of L-carnitine during oocyte maturation on developmental competence and cryotolerance of single bovine embryo cultured. Methodology: Embryos were produced in vitro using abattoir-derived cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs). In experiment 1, two individual maturation, fertilization and culture systems were used in 24-well plates with 20 µL drops of medium covered with mineral oil and 96-well plates with 30 µL drops of medium. In experiment 2, oocytes were randomly distributed into two groups and single matured in 96-well plates in medium supplemented or not with 0.6mg/mL L-carnitine. On day 7 post fertilization, blastocysts were vitrified on solid surface in Fiberplug. Non-vitrified blastocysts were used as control. Embryonic survival after devitrification was determined by blastocysts re-expansion and hatching rate at 24 and 48 hours of post-devitrification culture. Total cell number and apoptotic rate by TUNEL-DAPI staining were used as quality and cryotolerance indicator. In both cases, cleavage and blastocyst rates were evaluated at 48 hours and 7 days post fertilization, respectively. Results: No significant differences were found for embryonic development between single culture systems. There was no effect of L-carnitine supplementation during maturation on embryo development, but embryo survival had increased (P < 0.05) at 24- and 48-hours post devitrification. Implications: Treatment with L-carnitine had increased (P < 0.05) post-thaw re-expansion rates (86.8 ± 3.0 vs 70.0 ± 4.4) and it was similar to non-vitrified control (89.7 ± 2.6). Mean cell number and apoptotic cell index, were similar for all treatment groups. Conclusion: L-carnitine supplementation during maturation, does not improve division rate and subsequent development of single cultured embryos, however increases cryotolerance post devitrification
