Background. Studies in temperate regions report the effect of lactation length (LL) and farrowing- service (IFS) and weaning-to-first service intervals (IWS) on the reproductive efficiency of sows in commercial farms. However, research about this topic under tropical conditions is scarce. Objective. To investigate the relationship of LL, IWS and IFS on subsequent number of piglets born alive (SPBA), and the effect of LL on number of parity per sow per year (NFY) and number of piglets born alive per sow per year (PBAY) in a commercial farm in the tropics of Mexico. Methodology. Data from 9663 litters were used. The statistical model for SPBA, NFY and PBAY included the fixed effects of farrowing year (2013, 2014), farrowing season (rainy, north and dry), farrowing number (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), simple interaction of year by farrowing season, and the linear and quadratic effects of LL, IWS and IFS for SPBA, and the linear and quadratic effect of LL for NFY and PBAY. Results. The factors evaluated were significant for all variables of interest. Linear effect (P < 0.05) of LL, IWS and IFS was found only on SLNV. The predictive equation for SLNV was Y= 10.8551+0.02242*LLL+0.01515*IDS. The equation for SPBA with IFS was Y= 10.9939 + 0.01604*IFS. In addition, a negative linear and quadratic effect (P < 0.05) of LL on NFY, and a negative linear effect (P < 0.05) on SPBA were found. The predictive equation for NFY was Y= 2.7432-0.001689*LL-0.00032*LL2 and for PBAY was Y= 32.2414-0.1444*LL. Implications. The effect of LL, IWS and IFS on sow productivity is fundamental for decision making and adapting management, techniques and technologies to production systems. Conclusion. Under the conditions of the present study, increasing LL and IWS increased sow SPBA. However, increasing LL reduced NFY and PBAY.Antecedentes.

Background: Studies that help to evaluate agroecosystems are of great importance for world agricultural production in order to achieve a more sustainable agriculture. Objective: To evaluate the physical and chemical attributes of the soil with crops intercropped with coffee. Methodology: The research was carried out on the property of a family farmer located in the municipality of Alegre, state of Espírito Santo, in southeastern Brazil. For this, three farming systems were defined: monoculture coffee, coffee intercropped with plantain, and coffee intercropped with plantain and hearts of palm. Five randomly selected experimental units were established in each system. The physical attributes were evaluated: texture and mechanical resistance of the soil; and chemical attributes: pH, P, K, Ca, Mg, Al+H, SB, CIC-e, CIC-T, %SB, %SA and MO. Results: Soil texture was similar in the three cultivation systems, however, the monoculture coffee soil had a higher percentage of sand and a lower percentage of clay. The mechanical resistance was similar between the culture systems in the two depths evaluated. Regarding chemical attributes, monoculture coffee presented higher values for pH, P, K, Ca and Mg, SB, CICe and %SB, and lower value for organic matter content. Conclusion: These results show that the physical and chemical attributes of the soil are affected by intercropping with coffee, so it is necessary to modify the agronomic management for these conditions.

Background: The Yucatan Peninsula is covered mainly by semi-humid forests associated with karstic zones. These landscapes show high rates of endemism, and although they are resilient ecosystems, climatic variations place them as highly susceptible areas to climate change. Objective: To identify environmental and anthropogenic risk factors in the semi-humid forests of the Yucatan Peninsula, and to evaluate the vulnerability to climate change of 25 forest species with economic importance in this region. Methodology: A multi-criteria analysis was carried out to rank edaphic and climatic variables, changes in potential distribution due to climate change, species density and growing rate. These variables were integrated into a matrix and each variable was valued from 0 to 4, weighted between parameters, the higher the value, the greater the susceptibility. Four percent of the species were classified into the high-risk susceptibility and 84 % as medium risk and the rest as low. These species have a low density per hectare, have a restricted distribution, are slow growing and are over shallow soils. Implications: Species that can develop in a wide range of environmental conditions and have rapid growth rates were less susceptible to the risk factors analyzed here. Conclusions: The greatest risk factor was due to the effect of climate change, followed by the proximity to the Caribbean coast and the type of soil, which suggests that more conservation actions for forest species are needed, which will also ensure the provision of environmental services to human populations.

Background. The amount of nutrients required by pineapple varies depending on the cultivar and planting density. Knowing the nutrient requirement in quantity and the appropriate phenological stage will allow the development of an adequate fertilization program. Objective. To determine the effect of pineapple cultivar and planting density on N, P, and K content during plant development and at harvest. Methodology. The cultivars 'Smooth Cayenne', 'Champaka', and 'MD-2' were established at 30000, 45000, and 60000 plants ha-1. Eight samples were taken to determine the N, P, and K content in the organs and the total plant. Results. The highest and lowest N, P, and K contents were detected in the leaf and root, respectively. The highest N and K contents occurred at 441 - 506 days after planting. Higher P content occurred close to harvest. The highest N, P, and K contents per plant were at 30000 plants ha-1 (14.86, 1.52, and 16.29 g plant-1, respectively) and the lowest at 60000 plants ha-1 (10.16, 1.13, and 14.6 g plant-1, respectively). Higher N, P, and K contents per hectare were detected with 60000 plants ha-1 (609, 68, and 875 kg ha-1, respectively).  At harvest, ‘Smooth Cayenne’ at 60000 plants ha-1 accumulated the highest amount of N, P, and K (147, 37, and 306 kg ha-1, respectively). Implications. The changes that can occur in the nutrient requirements of pineapple as a function of cultivar, planting density, and stage of plant development were identified. This information will be useful for producers, agricultural technicians, and researchers in Mexico and the world, to generate fertilization programs or establish new research. Conclusion. At the beginning of plant growth, a higher N, P, and K contents in the leaf, this amount decreases as the fruit harvest approaches. Regardless of cultivar, the highest nutrient content per plant occurs at the lowest planting density, however, the highest content per hectare occurs at the highest planting density. At harvest time, fewer nutrients are removed from the soil with 'Champaka' and 'MD-2' fruit.Antecedentes.

Background. White mango scale (WMS) is present at any physiological stage of the mango tree, can remain on leaves and fruits, and affects photosynthesis and fruit aesthetics. Knowing the population fluctuation of WMS and its natural enemies over time will help to design efficient control strategies. Objective. To determine the annual population fluctuation of WMS and its natural enemies in three mango-producing areas, in Veracruz, Mexico. Methodology. In three mango orchards cv. 'Manila' in productive stage, located in the municipalities of Actopan, Medellín, and Tierra Blanca (one orchard at each municipality), the number of female individuals and male colonies of WMS, and its natural enemies Chilocorus cacti, Scymnus spp., Azya orbigera, Ceraeochrysa spp. and Pentilia spp., were monitored for 12 consecutive months. Results. Higher densities of WMS and Ceraeochrysa spp. were found in the Actopan orchard. The density of natural enemies changed according to species and time of year. The density of Pentilia spp., Scymnus spp., and Ceraeochrysa spp. correlated with the WMS density, with a higher and lower density of individuals per leaf in December-May and June-October, respectively. Implications. The time when the highest and lowest populations of WMS and its natural enemies occur in different 'Manila' mango-producing areas in Veracruz were identified. This knowledge will help to define the most appropriate timing and strategy for WMS control. Conclusion. The greater WMS population coincides with the fruiting stage, so its control should start in winter, during the flowering stage. Considering that the population of C. cacti, Pentilia sp., Scymnus spp., and Ceraeochrysa spp. present positive correlation with the WMS, it is recommended to reduce the use of broad-spectrum pesticides and to increase the use of cultural practices to benefit the population of these natural enemies.Antecedentes.

Background. Climate change is a global phenomenon, with varying indicators and impacts from one region to another. The impacts of the changing climate are high in developing countries that are mainly dependent on climate-driven economic sectors such as pastoral and agro-pastoral livelihoods. Objective. Analyze the temporal trend, the variability in temperature and precipitation, and the relationship between both parameters to determine the influence of the El Niño phenomenon in Marsabit County, Kenya, from 1981 to 2021. Methodology. Daily rainfall and temperature data for the four study locations (Maikona, Kargi, Dakabaricha, and Sololo) were obtained. The analysis of extremes was the main method used in the analysis of the temporal and spatial variability of rainfall and temperature to establish the frequency and magnitude of climate variability in the study area. The seasonal mean plus or minus 1 Standard deviation for the entire period of study was used in the analysis of extremes. Results. Findings from trend analysis showed that rainfall trends have significantly increased in Marsabit County. Further, results on seasonal trends and variability of rainfall showed that March-April-May rainfall has been decreasing over the years. Below average rainfall has been experienced in Maikona in 2000 and 2011 with a magnitude of -42.9 mm, and -39.3 mm, respectively, while below average rainfall has been experienced in Kargi in 2000, 2009, 2011, and 2012 with a magnitude of -41.7 mm, -24.2 mm, -35.3 mm, and -34.3 mm, respectively. Analysis of the temperature trends and variability showed that both night and day temperatures have significantly increased over the years in Marsabit County. The magnitude of warming was found to be double that of cooling. The regression analysis further showed that there exists a negative correlation between temperatures and rainfall, implying that generally, rainfall decreases with increasing temperatures. Implications. This finding is important because it could help policymakers and people working on development in Marsabit County see what temperature and precipitation changes are happening locally. This could help them plan for climate change better. Both pastoral and agro-pastoral areas have been affected by both El Niño and La Niña activities, with the El Niño years recording the highest amounts of rainfall while the La Niña years recording the lowest amounts. Conclusions. This study recommends the use of rainwater harvesting during the October to December Season to take advantage of the increasing Trends and flood episodes associated with high magnitudes and frequencies of above average rainfall and use the same to cope with reduced rainfall in the March to May season. Antecedentes.

Background. Dairy cows convert between 24 to 32% of dietary nitrogen (N2) into milk protein, the rest of the dietary N2 is excreted in urine and feces which contributes to environmental N2 pollution. Besides the N2 excretions, crude protein (CP) represents up to 69% of the diet´s total cost. Therefore, the best way to reduce environmental pollution and increase dairy profits is the reduction of crude protein in the diet of cows. Objective. To determine the productive and economic performance of Brown Swiss cows at different stages of lactation fed two crude protein levels 14 vs 16%. Methodology. Twenty-three multiparous Brown Swiss cows stratified by stage of lactation as early (EL), mid (ML), and late (LL) were used and subjected to two CP levels 14 and 16% on a crossover design with two experimental periods (EP) of three weeks each. Cows on experimental CP 14% in the EP1 switched to 16% in the EP-2, whereas cows that received a 16% diet in the first EP switched to 14% in the EP2. Milk-to-feed price ratio and income over-feeding cost were estimated as indicators of profitability. Results. The were no significant differences in any response variable due to dietary crude protein (P > 0.05), except for milk protein yield (kg/day) (P = 0.03), where 16% CP had higher yields (0.57) than 14% CP (0.55, kg/day). Cows in early and mid-lactation stages had higher performance than in late lactation (P < 0.05), on most of the response variables. Income over feeding-costs were 0.24 and 0.21 (USD/kg)forCP14and16 USD/kg) for CP 14 and 16%, respectively. Total income over feeding cost per treatment was 1,020 for CP 14%, and 917forCP16917 for CP 16%. Implications. The reduction of crude protein in the diet of lactating cows will allow reductions if milk production cost, as well as reductions of N2 excretions to the environment. Conclusions. The productive performance of the cows was not affected by a reduction of crude protein in the diet, but the reduction of crude protein resulted in lower milk production cost and higher income-over feeding cost.Antecedentes.

Background. Pasture growth rate (PGR, kg/ha/day) depends on climatic and management practices. However, studies on the influence of the environment on pasture production and productivity of dry matter are scarce in tropical, hot, and humid regions of México. Objective. To estimate the pasture growth curve using time and climatic variables. Methodology. We related, through nonlinear models, the accumulated growth of a pasture composed of native grasses mixed with exotic grasses, using time and the variables temperature and day length as independent variables, the latter integrated into a single variable called thermal photo units (PTU). We estimated the daily growth rates of five divisions; from these, the forage yields for ten days until completing 29 periods. The best-fit models had the largest coefficients of determination and the lowest Akaike’s information criterion. Results. The model that best described the relationship between cumulative yield (Y) and cumulative growing days (X) was reciprocal-quadratic: y = x/(0.097535 – 0.0000881x + 0.0000006810x2) with R2Adj, of 0.9988 and an AICC of 222.6. The model that best described the relationship between the accumulated performance and the accumulated PTU was rational: y = (- 317.8 + 1.594x + 0.00001307x2)/(1 + 0.001059x + 0.00000001964x2), with R2Adjt.=0.9985 and AICC=233.4. Likewise, a two-segment model showed a close fit. The logarithmic model described the first segment: y1 = -2268 + 417.2*(ln(x)), when y2 =1079.3e0.00003932X, if x > 8415; with R2Adj. = 0.9975 and AICc = 245.1. The value 8415 PTU was when the first derivative of both models coincided. Implications. The information generated is useful because it allows grazing system adjustment concerning the correct stocking rate application and designing more efficient grazing rotations. Conclusions. The conversion of growth rates to accumulated yield for ten-day periods produced a smooth curve that allowed fitting high-precision nonlinear models to predict forage accumulation from time and climatic variables.Antecedentes.

Background: The aguaymanto has aroused great interest in both the national and international markets for its different uses: aesthetic, medicinal, nutritional and gastronomic.  However, agronomic management strategies for this crop with commercial potential are unknown, resulting in low yields and profitability. Objective: To evaluate the effect of different doses of Biogen 1 biostimulant (Bg) and planting distances (PD) on the production and economic analysis of aguaymanto. Methodology: Two factors were evaluated: planting density and dose of biostimulant, resulting in 6 treatments: T1- control (250 ml Bg/200 L + 1m x 1m); T2 (250 ml Bg/200 L + 1.5m x1.5m); T3 (500 ml Bg/200 L + 1m x 1m); T4 (500 ml Bg/200 L + 1.5m x 1.5m); T5 (750 ml Bg/200 L + 1m x 1m) and T6 (750 ml Bg/ 200 L + 1.5m x 1.5m), using a randomized complete block design. The following production parameters were evaluated: number of fruits per plant-NFP, fruit weight-FW (g), fruit diameter-FD (cm), yield per plant-YPP (kg/plant), yield per hectare-YPHA (kg ha-1). Results: T6 had the best yields per plant; however, in the yield per hectare and in the economic analysis, T5 performed better. The correlation in NFP was positive on FD, YPP and YPHA; also, FW with respect to FD and YPP. FD was positively correlated with YPP. However, YPP presented a very weak correlation with YPHA. Implications: Proper use of biostimulants and planting distance increases crop yields. Conclusion: The T6 treatment improved the parameters evaluated per plant, and T5 improved YPHA and the B/C ratio.
