ÁREAS DE IDONEIDAD PARA Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus BAJO DIFERENTES ESCENARIOS DE CAMBIO CLIMÁTICO EN MÉXICO
Background. Climate change models have projected an increase in the distribution of certain crop pests of economic importance by forecasting more favorable future conditions for these organisms. In citrus farming, Huanglongbing is one of the most devastating diseases worldwide, since it has caused the death of millions of trees. Objetive. The objective of this study was to estimate the current and future distribution of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus in Mexico, under the climate change scenarios SSP2 4.5 and SSP5 8.5, for the years 2050 and 2070. Methodology. Distribution models were generated with MaxEnt and R, using uncorrelated bioclimatic variables from eight General Circulation Models (GCM) derived from CMIP6 and disease presence data. Results. The results indicate that the current suitability is 44.6 %. The future distribution depended on how model predictions were pooled. An optimistic approach that considered the intersection of all models showed a small reduction of 4.1% while, considering the union of all the GCM models, the increase will vary from 12.3 to 20.1 % of the Mexican territory depending on the particular scenario and time projection. Implications. The zones of potential occurrence of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus include most of the citrus-growing areas in Mexico. Conclusion. In some regions, future scenarios show a reduction in the potential occurrence of the species in citrus plantations. However, the risk remains because its surroundings include suitable areas that can be sources of dissemination of the disease. Antecedentes.
Background. Fine root production and turnover are the fundamental processes of net primary productivity in forest ecosystems. Fine root production and turnover rates can vary with the successional gradients of the forest ecosystems created by land use changes. Objective. To evaluate the variations in fine root production and turnover along the successional gradients of tropical secondary forests and compare them with adjacent primary forests. Methodology. A total of 256 cylindrical ingrowth bags (of 8 cm diameter and 30 cm depth) were established in 16 forest stands representing four stages of succession. Four ingrowth bags from each stand were collected at an interval of about three months. Live and dead fine roots (≤2 mm diameter) were separated, washed, oven-dried, and weighed. Results. There was no significant difference in annual fine root productivity between secondary forests and primary forests but the fine root turnover rates were higher in secondary forests than in primary forests. Fine root production rates varied from 1.9 to 2.8 Mg of dry biomass ha-1 yr-1 while fine root turnover over rates ranged from 1.1 to 1.5 yr-1. Fine root production was higher in the dry season compared to the wet season. Implications. The results on fine root dynamics can be useful in modeling below-ground mechanisms of carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems during succession. Conclusions. Fine root productivity did not vary with forest age but the relative turnover rates were higher in secondary forests than in primary forests. Tree basal area was a significant predictor of fine root production. Antecedentes.
Background: Weeds invasion into rangeland ecosystems is a precursor for biodiversity loss, increased soil erosion, declining wildlife habitats, and decline in carrying capacity for livestock. These weeds are fierce competitors with range grasses often possessing attributes of high seedling vigor and short life cycles compared to the grasses. Weeds invasion to a pasture land, can starve the grasses grown in the land. Objective: To investigate the competitive interactions of three range grasses with weed infestation. Methodology: The grasses evaluated were; Chloris roxburghiana (CHLORIS), Cenchrus ciliaris (CECI), and Eragrotis superba (ERASU). Four weed control regimes were applied: Continuous weeding (T1), weeding on the 8th week (T2), weeding on 10th week (T3) and the control (T4). The grass species Morpho-ecological data was collected on parameters such as; tiller density, grass height, grass density and biomass yield at the grass bloom stage. Results: A significant difference in morpho-ecological traits of all the weeding regimes was found. Continuous weed management and weeding at 8th week of establishment, respectively showed the highest performance in all the parameters measured. None-weeding management demonstrated the least performance. Implication: These research findings will help in developing a long term pasture weeds management plans to prevent encroachment of problematic weed species and to rehabilitate the already degraded rangelands. Conclusion: On all the grass species, continuous, weeding, periodic weeding at 8 weeks and 10 weeks demonstrated an increase in dry matter biomass respectively. None-weeding had the least pasture performance.
Background: Given the importance of the agricultural activity for the economic development of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in this paper we assess the effect of the environmental parameters related to soils and socioeconomic factors on the performance of the municipalities. Objective: To identify factors that influence on agricultural production performance, as well as the directions of such influences (positive or negative). Methodology: A two-stage Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was chosen for this analysis. The performance scores are computed considering land, labor, and capital (or technology) as inputs, and the value of crops and of livestock production as outputs. Results: The average efficiency was 0.5509 and 12 municipalities out of the 89 assessed were 100% efficient. A high level of susceptibility to erosion significantly and negatively influences the efficiency scores. The suitability of land for agriculture and for livestock are positively associated with performance. The presence of family-based farmers favors the agricultural performance of the assessed municipalities. Implications: These results may support public policies related to land use and soil governance. Conclusions: The proposed two-stage DEA approach was useful to assess the influence of factors related to soils and socioeconomic indicators on the agricultural performance of the municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
MAIZE DIVERSITY IN THREE GEOMORPHOLOGICAL REGIONS OF YUCATAN, MEXICO
Background: Maize (Zea mays L.) is the main sustenance in the daily diet of Mexican families. As a crop, it is one of the most important in the country of Mexico, and in Yucatan state, it is grown under rainfed conditions in milpas with no mechanizable lands. In this study, an analysis of the phenotypic variability from cob collects of native maize from Yucatan state was carried out, with ethnobotanical information collected within passport data. Objectives: To introduce the genetic diversity of maize into a germplasm bank, to know the genetic diversity of native populations based on the characteristics of cob, to know its distribution, to find the potential populations in each collection area for its use in genetic improvement programs. Methodology: 66 Tuxpeños, 13 Dzit bacal, 6 Nal tel, 13 Xmejen nal, and 2 Nal xoy were collected in the southern, central, and eastern regions of the state, from January to March 2020, by sampling the four cardinal points in each community visited. A vector map of collections in Yucatan was developed and quantitative data of 13 biometric cob variables were recorded in 100 populations (crop cycles: late n=68; intermediate n=26; early n=6), a general data analysis of variance (ANOVA) and by crop cycles were made, principal component analysis (PCA), hierarchically clustered with the average linkage method and discriminant analysis were made. Qualitative data from ethnobotanical surveys with mixed questions applied to milperos at the time of collection are presented. Results: The diversity of native maize in Yucatan is made up of three main groups based on the crop cycle: late, intermediate, and early. The southern and eastern regions of Yucatan preserve greater diversity, representing 44 and 40% of the total collections, respectively. There were significant differences in all ear variables; in a late growth cycle, only the grain thickness did not show differences between populations, and in the early growth cycle the grain thickness, width, and length variables were not significant. The PCA explained 80% of the total variation, seven different groups were formed, with greater differentiation in early maize Nal tel, intermediate Xmejen nal and Dzit bacal, contrary to the Tuxpeños late maize. Ten promising populations were identified for selection in each geomorphological region: eight correspond to the southern, two to the eastern, and one to the center of Yucatan state. The main factors to select for sowing corn in the region are: white and yellow maize for yield, the resistance to weevil attack for red maize, and the perception of color and palatability in purple maize. Implications: A complete phenotypic characterization in the field is required with a special interest in red-pigmented maize. Conclusions: The interest of the milperos in conserving and sowing the different native maize are based on the color of the grain, the benefits and uses that they can obtain from them, which determine the planting area in the milpas of the different races/varieties of maize. Red grain maize is being planted in a lower area in relation to other colors. The southern and eastern geomorphological regions showed a genetic flow between them
ALMACENAMIENTO DE CARBONO EN LA BIOMASA ARBÓREA Y EL SUELO EN SISTEMAS SILVOPASTORILES DEL TRÓPICO HÚMEDO
Background: The transformation native of forests into pasturelands for livestock farming, affects ecosystems carbon (C) stores and soil properties. Objective: Estimate the carbon stored in tree biomass (above and below ground) and determine soil organic carbon and some physical and chemical properties in two silvopastoral systems (SPS): scattered trees in paddocks (STP) and living fences (LF), taking grass monoculture (PM) as reference. Methodology: The C content in the above and below-ground biomass of the trees was estimated through allometric models, the C fraction of the soil from 0-100 cm was determined by chemical digestion, and the soil organic carbon (SOC) stock was estimated. The physical and chemical properties of the soil were determined. Results: SSPs with STP and LF stored a greater amount of total C (387.0 and 362.6 Mg ha-1 de C) compared to GM (312.5 Mg ha-1 de C), tree biomass contributed 6.3% and 8.4% for STP and LF respectively. Soils stored 90% of the total C in STP and LF. The tree component favorably modified soil pH, the bulk density, the organic matter, carbon, and nitrogen content. Implications: This study contributes with scientific information useful to develop low-emission livestock systems for transition towards climate-smart farming systems essential to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. Conclusions: Tree diversity and density in STP ADP and LF play an important role in the storage of total C, favor C accumulation in the deeper layers of the soil and improve the physical and chemical properties of the soil.

Background: Potato cultivation in the northern highlands of Peru has intensified due to the high demand of the national market for the nutritional quality of this tuber, however, the conventional system presents critical points in social, economic and environmental terms that limit the profitability of the cultivation, being relevant the identification of these critical points to carry out the intervention and propose strategies to improve said agricultural system. Objective: Determine the sustainability index of potato producing farms in the province of Cutervo, Cajamarca, Peru. Methodology: 165 questionnaires with structured questions were applied to farmers whose main activity is potato cultivation. Multiple correspondence analysis was used to determine the reliability of these surveys. The values of the economic, social and environmental indicators were found through multidimensional analysis and an ordinal scale from 1 to 5, in which "1" was considered the least sustainable and "5" as a maximum level of sustainability. Results: The analysis of internal consistency of data for the 14 indicators and 24 sub-indicators presented Cronbach's alpha coefficients of 0.977 and 0.968 respectively, indicating high reliability and acceptable internal consistency of the evaluated indicators and therefore, the questionnaire presents high reliability. Likewise, the sustainable analysis of the potato agroecosystem in Cutervo reported that the farms are socially and environmentally sustainable, with indexes of 3.39 and 3.11, respectively, while the economic dimension presented critical conditions with a value below the minimum sustainable threshold (2.93) being the critical points: "percentage that causes the incidence of pests and diseases in potatoes", "number of marketing channels", "dependence on external inputs", "application of organic matter", "internal conservation”, “situ of native varieties”, “degree of damage from the use of pesticides” and “use of pesticides”. Regarding the general sustainability index, the potato agroecosystem is not sustainable. Implications: Potato producers in the mountains need to reduce environmental impact and increase productivity and profitability. Conclusion: The sustainability index of the potato agroecosystem in Cutervo, Peru, reported that the social and environmental dimensions exceeded the critical conditions while the economic dimension presented values below the minimum threshold of sustainability, resulting that the potato production system is not sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to intervene in the sub-indicators that presented critical points and thus establish strategies to improve the potato agroecosystem in the northern highlands of Peru
