    An Investigation of the Effect of Electrode Geometry and Frequency of Power Supply in the Homogeneity of Dielectric Barrier Discharge in Air

    An experimental investigation of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) produced in air isreported in the present paper. The discharge was produced by applying 0?20 kV AC source atfrequency 10?30 kHz. The main objective of the study was to investigate the dependence ofthe discharge homogeneity on the frequency of applied source and the geometry of theelectrodes. For this propose, three different types of electrodes were used. The discharge wassystematically investigated on an extended range of electrical parameters using highfrequency digital oscilloscope. Non-thermal nature of the discharge was tested by thetreatment of hydrophobic polymer surface by measuring the change in contact angle withwater drops

    Actuator design for arc welding robot

    The present work is an attempt to determine torque required at each joint of 6-Degree of Freedom Arc Welding Robot for typical horizontal fillet welding operation which will be useful for designing actuator. Here, range of welding speed 90mm/min & 2000mm/min is taken. Result obtained at the end of this analysis will be useful for designing actuator capacity for typical application. The methodology adopted for analysis includes development of dynamic model, determination of velocity and acceleration with respect to time and thus determination of torque using velocity-acceleration and dynamic model

Currently, land tenure issues are primarily governed under the legislations enacted by the Ministry of Land Reform and Management, while there are a number of policies formulated in order to facilitate agricultural production by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Ministry of Water Resources for irrigation regulation, Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation through Leaseholds forestry programme

    Assessment of Traffic Noise Pollution in Banepa, A Semi Urban Town of Nepal

    Noise pollution is an interfering air-pollutant which possesses both auditory and a host of non-auditory effects on the exposed population. Since there is no medicine to cure hearing loss prevention to overt exposure is the only alternative left. The study reports community noise levels measured during day time in a fast developing semi-urban area of Nepal. The noise levels were measured following standard procedure using calibrated sound pressure level meter at many places predominated by both commercial and residential tenements at Banepa town particularly reflecting motor vehicular traffic prone areas. A small exercise of nose generated by different vehicles that frequent on the arterial roads has also been carried out. To delineate the perception about the noise and its significance on health of community a representative sample of public has been interviewed using a questionnaire. The results indicate high noise levels, surpassing on many occasions to the prescribed levels. Overall minimum and maximum noise levels for the Main Road are 60.1dB (A) and 110.2 dB (A). Bus parks and Bus stops had minimum and maximum noise levels were 63.9 dB (A) and 110.2dB (A). The picture near residential tenements also had substantial levels of noise, a minimum of 59.11dB (A). The noise levels produced by different motor vehicles ranged from 121 to 91.2 dB(A), which was substantial. The study observes motor vehicles as main source in the town. The perception survey indicate high prevalence of head aches, lack of concentration, sleep. Since levels lie much above the prescribed limits there is am imminent health risk to the exposed population and the study suggests control measures to be instituted on a priority.     Tracking Facila Expressions by using Stereoscopy Video and Back Propagation Neural Network

    In this paper we propose a method to tracking facial expressions. A system with two cameras is used to capture stereoscopic video sequences. The frames are acquired and analyzed by matching two stereoscopic frames through a correlation method that performs image processing to obtain a resulting frame, and then it is processed to recognize a human face by using the Viola and Jones (VJ) method. The face is located via the Nitzberg operator and it provides the feature points of the eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth, which are introduced into a Backpropagation neural network that is capable of learning and classifying different types of facial expressions that make a person, feel such as: surprised, scared, unhappy, sad, mad and happy. Finally, the result of this process is recognition of facial expressions

    Formulation and Evaluation of Antimicrobial Herbal Ointment

    Most of the antibiotics were originally derived from micro-organisms while thechemotherapeutic agents are from plants. Herbal medicine refers to the use of anyplant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Alongwith other dosage forms, herbal drugs are also formulated in the form of ointment. Anointment is a viscous semisolid preparation used topically on a variety of bodysurfaces. The objective of the study was to formulate and evaluate the antimicrobialherbal ointment from the local medicinal plants. The ethanolic extracts of the selectedplants were taken in different ratio randomly and the antimicrobial tests of thecombinations were carried out. The most effective combination was then determinedby comparing the results of the zone of inhibition given by the 10 different extractratios on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species. Then theminimum inhibitory concentration of the effective combination was found out. Theointment base was prepared and formulation of ointment was done by incorporatingthe active ingredients in most effective ratio in the base by trituration. After thecompletion of the formulation, quality of the ointment was assessed in terms ofirritancy, spreadability, diffusion and stability

    Urban Environmental Quality Mapping: A Perception Study on Chittagong Metropolitan City

    Urbanization is a global phenomenon. It is taking place at a faster pace in the less developed countries of the world like Bangladesh. The implication of such urbanization are manifested in mass poverty, gross inequality, high unemployment, crowded housing, proliferation of slums and squatters, deterioration in the environmental condition, highly inadequate supply of water, over crowding in schools and hospitals, increase in traffic jams, road accidents, crimes and social tensions. These features are the characteristics of nearly all urban centers of Bangladesh. The study has endeavored to analyze both the factual status and the perceptual pattern of the environmental quality of Chittagong Metropolitan City. The factual data have been collected from various secondary sources; while the perceptual data are based on a questionnaire survey of opinions of 492 respondents at the household level by city ward. Finally, it has been statistically justified by the use of a satisfaction index to know the degree of satisfaction of the respondents and chi-square test to examine the relationship between the income groups and degree of satisfaction. The study of perception residents f the different environmental aspects, show variation of degree of satisfaction by income groups and by groups of environmental features. The expected growth of population in Chittagong city will have adverse impact on the quality of urban environment

    Application of artificial neural network to predict properties of diesel-biodiesel blends

    The experimental determination of various properties of diesel-biodiesel mixtures is very time consuming as well as tedious process. Any tool helpful in estimation of these properties without experimentation can be of immense utility. In present work, other tools of determination of properties of diesel-biodiesel blends were tried. A traditional statistical technique of linear regression (principle of least squares) was used to estimate the flash point, fire point, density and viscosity of diesel and biodiesel mixtures. A set of seven neural network architectures, three training algorithms along with ten different sets of weight and biases were examined to choose best Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict the above-mentioned properties of dieselbiodiesel mixtures. The performance of both of the traditional linear regression and ANN techniques were then compared to check their validity to predict the properties of various mixtures of diesel and biodiesel

    Indigenous approach in organic solid waste management in Guyana (South America)

    Organic waste posses a serious environmental problem globally. This can be solved by combination of effective technologies like Biodung composting and Vermitech (incorporating earthworms for the production of vermicompost). The present work was carried out during the year 2006-2007 at University of Guyana, Georgetown to recycle grass clippings, water hyacinth and cattle dung by using Eisenia fetida the locally available surface species of earthworm. The results indicated that the organic waste (grass clipping s and water hyacinth) were successfully processed through partial biodung composting and vermicomposting during the period of 60 days. The temperature study during biodung composting showed two peak rise of temperature resulting in destruction of harmful microbes. Subsequent vermicomposting resulted in production of vermicompost confirming to the excellent nutrient status recorded in earlier experiments. The temperature study during vermicomposting showed that fluctuation was restricted to +0.83
