Work related musculoskeletal disorders affect numerous workers each year. The repetitive tasks sometimes combined with forceful exertions expose workers to risk of over exertion which may deem susceptible of developing musculoskeletal disorders. Among the major tasks being performed in the manufacturing sector, lifting is the most common type of task encountered daily. Researches have adopted different methodologies for assessing the fatigue levels during lifting tasks. The current methods of assessing the occupational exposure to repetitiveness focuses more on the local muscle fatigue and single indicators of fatigue such as electromyography, however fail to provide a meaningful picture of how the multi-dimensional phenomenon of fatigue can be represented as a unified scale representing whole body fatigue. Furthermore, most of the studies focus on a particular region of perceived exertion rather than incorporating the maximum indicators of fatigue to make a comprehensive framework. Therefore an alternate approach of assessment is required that not only incorporates multiple features of the phenomenon of the fatigue but also provides an easy assessment of fatigue through a single scale. This research is an attempt to address the assessment of multidimensional nature of fatigue and introduces a method of incorporating the physiological and psychological variables of fatigue using electromyography, heart rate and Borg scale. The variables are used to assess the level of fatigue and to find how each of the underlying variable contribute towards perceived whole body fatigue. For this purpose, the regression modelling approach is used. The study is carried out in two phases: the design of experiment phase (1) and the scale development phase (2). Each of the phase is carried out to compliment the preceding steps and provide with the relevant data related to the variables selected. The perceived fatigued from the upper and lower extremity of the body and the whole body is obtained using Borg scale while the time series recordings of the muscle activity is obtained with the surface electromyography (sEMG). The electromyography signals of each contraction are identified through root-mean-square (RMS) amplitude which are then transformed from time domain to frequency domain. The RMS is used to find the onset of the contraction and to accurately calculate the mean power frequency at each contraction. The validated Borg scale ratings from the upper and lower extremities are observed and it is found that the lower extremity dominates the perceived exertion during squat lifting. The key muscles undergoing fatigue are found through principal component analysis (PCA). All of the eight muscles of the upper and lower extremities are correlated with their respective extremities to find if there is any relation between the mean power frequencies and the perceived exertions. Heart rate and the whole body perceived exertion indexes are found to have very strong correlation. Logistic regression modeling is used to quantify the measured indicators of fatigue into fatigue and non-fatigue states and with dichotomous responses. The key muscle from the Principal component analysis, the heart rate and the lower extremity are the independent variable, while the whole body fatigue is quantified into dichotomous as well as four levels as a dependent variable separately. For the adequacy assessment, the Borg scale, EMG and Heart rates are selected as the variables being categorized as physiological and psychological indexes. The factor analysis is performed through PCA to have optimum number of the variables for the logistic regression models. The data for each of the variable is checked for reliability, using Cronbach alpha test. In the end the accuracy check for the model is performed. The average accuracy is found to be 80 percent. The model is also checked without incorporating the perceived rating of lower and upper extremities but heart rate is included as independent variable. There was significant difference found between the two methods at higher fatigue level. The dichotomous scale developed through logistic regression modelling will help ergonomists interested in understanding the importance of multidimensional nature of whole body fatigue and modeling the fatigue for other lifting tasks. The methodology presented in this study introduces a new metric for determination of whole body fatigue by incorporating combined factors of fatigue The findings revealed that it is significant to take into account the relation between perceived and measured effort that can help prevent musculoskeletal disorders in repetitive occupational tasks.Docto

Design and Fabrication of LongTerm Stable DyeSensitized Solar Cells: Effect of Water Contents in Electrolytes on the Performance

    No full text
The effects of water-containing I−/I3− liquid electrolytes on the photovoltaic performance and long-term stability of ruthenium based complex Z907 dye was examined in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Despite of high water content up to 60 vol% in organic solvent-based liquid electrolyte, the photovoltaic properties and long-term stability measured under the standard global (G) air-mass (AM) 1.5 solar irradiation were not significantly affected. The underlying correlation between the effects of water and the photovoltaic performances were identified by UV–visible spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We investigated the long-term stability of performance for DSSCs in conjunction with I−/ I3− redox electrolytes in different water compositions. The findings revealed that the competitive photovoltaic performance and longterm stability of water-containing DSSCs mainly depends on the hydrophobicity of dye as well as the transport phenomena of I3− throughout the electrolytes. The water-based DSSCs proposed herein are free from water permeation issues and these results will provide great insight into the development of less expensive and more environmental friendly DSSCs.Authors acknowledge the funding support by development program "Development of high drapability of textile type dye-sensitized solar cell materials and outdoor applications. Transient receptor potential melastatin 2 governs stress-induced depressive-like behaviors

    No full text
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a devastating disease that arises in a background of environmental risk factors, such as chronic stress, that produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the brain. The chronic stress-induced ROS production involves Ca2+ signals; however, the mechanism is poorly understood. Transient receptor potential melastatin type 2 (TRPM2) is a Ca2+-permeable cation channel that is highly expressed in the brain. Here we show that in animal models of chronic unpredictable stress (CUS), deletion of TRPM2 (Trpm2(-/-)) produces antidepressant-like behaviors in mice. This phenotype correlates with reduced ROS, ROS-induced calpain activation, and enhanced phosphorylation of two Cdk5 targets including synapsin 1 and histone deacetylase 5 that are linked to synaptic function and gene expression, respectively. Moreover, TRPM2 mRNA expression is increased in hippocampal tissue samples from patients with MDD. Our findings suggest that TRPM2 is a key agent in stress-induced depression and a possible target for treating depression. We thank Christopher W. Cowan and David S. Background and objective A coughspecific qualityoflife questionnaire is recommended to assess the impact of cough; however, a simple instrument to quantify cough is required for everyday clinical practice. This study was aimed to develop a short patientcompleted questionnaire (COugh Assessment Test, COAT). Methods The COAT was developed and validated by comparison with the Korean version of Leicester Cough Questionnaire (KLCQ) and cough numeric rating scale (NRS, 0–10, 11point scale) for chronic cough patients. Results Item selection identified five items regarding cough frequency, daily activity, sleep disturbance, fatigue and cough hypersensitivity (0–4 scaling of items, 0–20 score range) through reliability test cohort (n = 78). Test–retest reliability was strong (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.88). The final COAT was compared with KLCQ and cough NRS in a validation cohort (n = 323). In Rasch analysis, COAT fitted well to a unidimensional model. Pearson correlations of COAT versus KLCQ (i) before treatment, (ii) after treatment; COAT versus cough NRS (iii) before treatment, (iv) after treatment; (v) deltaCOAT versus deltacough NRS, (vi) deltaCOAT versus deltaKLCQ were (i) −0.71, (ii) −0.81, (iii) 0.69, (iv) 0.82, (v) −0.66 and (vi) 0.72, respectively. Conclusion The COAT is a useful, simple questionnaire for assessing and monitoring cough. This study was supported by a 2016 research grant from theKorean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease. Role of Klf4 in the Regulation of Apoptosis and Cell Cycle in Rat Granulosa Cells during the Periovulatory Period

In the ovary, the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge suppresses the proliferation and induces the luteinization of preovulatory granulosa cells (GCs), which is crucial for the survival of terminally-differentiated GCs. Kruppel-like factor 4 (Klf4) has been shown to play a role in regulating the cell cycle and apoptosis in various cell types. The rapid induction of Klf4 expressions by LH was observed in preovulatory GCs. To evaluate whether Klf4 affects GC proliferation and survival, primary rat GCs were isolated from pregnant mare serum gonadotropin-primed Sprague-Dawley rat ovaries and transfected with a Klf4 expression vector or Klf4-specific siRNA, followed by determination of the transcript levels of apoptosis-related and cell cycle-related genes. Cell proliferation, viability, and apoptosis were analyzed by BrdU incorporation, a Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, a bioluminescence caspase 3/7 assay, and flow cytometry. LH treatment increased Klf4 mRNA expression in preovulatory GCs. Transcripts of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and cell cycle promoters (Cyclin D1 and Cyclin D2) decreased, whereas those of the cell cycle inhibitor, p21, increased. Altering the expression of Klf4 by overexpression or knockdown consistently affected the expression of Bcl-2 and Cyclin D1. In agreement with this, Klf4 overexpression reduced cell viability, increased the fraction of apoptotic cells, and arrested cell cycle progression in G1 phase. We conclude that Klf4 increases the susceptibility of preovulatory GCs to apoptosis by down-regulating Bcl-2, and promotes LH-induced cell cycle exit. It appears to be a key regulator induced by the LH surge that determines the fate of GCs in preovulatory follicles during the luteal transition. This study was supported by the Ministry of Education and Science (NRF-20090074679)

Application of plasma medicine has been actively explored during last several years. Treating every type of cancer remains a difficult task for medical personnel due to the wide variety of cancer cell selectivity. Research in advanced plasma physics has led to the development of different types of non-thermal plasma devices, such as plasma jets, and dielectric barrier discharges. Non-thermal plasma generates many charged particles and reactive species when brought into contact with biological samples. The main constituents include reactive nitrogen species, reactive oxygen species, and plasma ultra-violets. These species can be applied to synthesize biologically important nanomaterials or can be used with nanomaterials for various kinds of biomedical applications to improve human health. This review reports recent updates on plasma-based synthesis of biologically important nanomaterials and synergy of plasma with nanomaterials for various kind of biological applications. This work was supported by a grant from the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), which is funded by the Korean Government, Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) NRF-2016K1A4A3914113; NRF-2016R1C1B2010851 and also by the Ministry of trade; industry & energy grant No. 20131610101840. In the field of organizational behavior, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), an activity in which firms fulfill their social responsibilities, is one of the areas under active study. CSR study can be largely divided into two sections: First is to examine the impact of CSR on financial performance, and the second is to identify the impact of CSR, which is primarily an activity that carries out external social responsibilities to internal employees. The study sought to examine the relationship between a corporate’s CSR activities and attitude of its internal employees from a second perspective. Therefore, this study was set as a dependent variable into organization commitment and job engagement for exploring attitude of the internal employees specifically. In addition, the relationship between a corporate’s CSR activities and attitude of its internal employees may vary depending on how internal employees perceive the organization, verifying its effects by setting the procedural justice as a moderating variable. In order to test the hypothesis of this study, the data was collected for various industrial groups in South Korea, and finally, the sample was composed of 5510 workers of total 232 companies. Hypothesis testing has shown that a corporate’s CSR activities have a significant influence on organization commitment and job engagement of its internal employees. Also result revealed moderating effects of procedural justice: the relationship between a corporate’s CSR activities and job engagement of internal employees strengthened when internal employees perceived procedural justice high. We describe the theoretical implications of these results for future research in CSR literatures. Based on the results of this study, implications of this study is as follows: First, this study contributed to the expansion of CSR research by confirming that a corporate’s CSR activities have a positive effect on its internal employees’ attitude toward organization or job. In particular, in this study, CSR was measured by top manager, not by the level of perception of internal employees. Specifically, that is to measure CSR as an organization’s external activities, not as a perception of its internal employees. Also, it will be meaningful that the role of positive moderation of procedural fairness in the relationship between a corporate’s CSR activities and job engagement of its internal employees has been confirmed. This can be said to imply that a fair decision-making process within an organization is necessary in order for a corporate’s CSR activities to positively affect job attitude of its internal employees. Finally, it could be meaningful that discriminant moderating effect of procedural fairness in the relationship between a corporate’s CSR activities and attitude of its internal employees. This means that the employees’ attitude can be differently by the corporate’s activities, depending on whether that attitude is toward the organization or toward the job. In other words, it is can be said to suggest that an organization should develop more specific way to influence attitude of its internal employee
