Margins of Conservation: Indigenous Resistance and Ecological Politics in The Hungry Tide

    Get PDF
Introduction: The paper explores the representation of Indigenous tribal communities in Amitav Ghosh’s The Hungry Tide, focusing on how their lived experiences and sentiments often stand in stark contrast to state laws and policies. Method: Through The Hungry Tide, Ghosh narrates the struggles of the displaced settlers and indigenous groups in the Sundarbans, highlighting the friction between environmental conservation policies and the rights of marginalized communities. Roy’s Walking with the Comrades offers a journalistic account of the Naxalite movement in India, portraying the deep-seated grievances of tribal communities against state oppression, displacement, and militarization. Results: The novel reveals how the state’s legal and developmental frameworks often disregard indigenous perspectives, treating them as obstacles rather than rightful stakeholders of their land. The paper examines the portrayal of forced evictions, ecological conflicts, and insurgency as resistance, arguing that these literary works serve as counter-narratives to the state’s dominant discourse. By juxtaposing fiction with non-fiction, the study sheds light on the intersection of literature, politics, and human rights, questioning the legitimacy of laws that prioritize economic and environmental interests over the survival of indigenous communities. Conclusion: This paper uncovers how Ghosh and Roy challenge hegemonic narratives, giving voice to the indigenous communities marginalised by history and policy

Introduction: The Colombian government proposes the creation of special development zones to promote economic growth in vulnerable regions. The objective is to analyze the impact on income tax and employment generation in Norte de Santander due to the exclusion of coal mining companies from the benefits of the Special Economic and Social Zone regime.Method: A mixed research type is followed. The analysis consists of a bibliographic review supported by research articles published in the Scopus, Scielo, Science Direct, Dialnet, and Redalyc databases. In addition, Colombian regulations related to the Special Economic and Social Zone regime are analyzed, and relevant academic texts are consulted. The sample consists of six coal companies.Result: There is a significant difference in the capacity of both sectors to take advantage of the incentives offered by the Special Economic and Social Zone regime. While the producing companies achieved substantial growth thanks to their focus on labor-intensive activities, the marketing companies showed a more limited impact, possibly due to their lesser dependence on direct contracting. Conclusions: The exclusion of coal mining companies from the Special Economic and Social Zone regime during 2020-2023 has significant effects on the Norte de Santander region, limiting the potential of this key sector to contribute to economic development and employment generation.

    Get PDF
The metaverse was conceptualized as an immersive environment capable of transforming learning experiences through three-dimensional interaction, virtual collaboration, and educational simulation. The main objective of this study was to analyze how academic participation, student performance, and digital equity were influenced by the integration of the metaverse in Latin American higher education. A mixed-methods sequential design was applied; quantitative instruments were designed and validated according to the core variables, achieving strong reliability levels, and surveys were administered to 600 students. Additionally, semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with students and instructors to explore perceptions in greater depth, followed by systematic open, axial, and selective coding. Quantitative results indicated that the metaverse increased participation and motivation, with mean values above 3.30; however, improvements in performance were moderate and uneven across participants. Significant digital equity gaps related to device access and connectivity also emerged, limiting the scope of immersive activities. Qualitative findings reinforced these patterns, revealing that participants perceived clear pedagogical benefits but experienced persistent technological barriers and limited training. Overall, the results showed that the metaverse had substantial potential to enhance participation and learning, although its effectiveness depended on institutional support, technological conditions, and users’ digital literacy levels

High-resolution dissociation analysis for the molecular diagnosis of cystic fibrosis in Cuba.

    Get PDF
Cystic fibrosis is a common recessive disease in the Caucasian population. Mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene can cause damage to the protein it encodes. Seven mutations are directly analyzed in Cuba, representing 55.5% of the pathogenic allelic variants in cystic fibrosis patients. The high allelic heterogeneity of this gene and its varied phenotypic expression make it vitally important to detect a greater number of genetic variants that cause the disease. With this data, patients can receive better genetic counseling and personalized treatment that would improve their quality of life. It is therefore necessary to search for new variants to complete the diagnosis. The objective of this work was to identify new genetic variants in the CFTR gene and confirm the clinical diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis. Twenty-one patients clinically diagnosed as cystic fibrosis by the National Medical Genetics Network or identified as positive through the Neonatal Screening Program were analyzed. Eleven real-time polymerase chain reaction assays were performed on the isolated DNA, followed by high-resolution dissociation curve analysis. The amplification of these eleven fragments covered the five exons of the gene with the highest number of described mutations and the adjacent intronic regions. Subsequently, the samples that showed changes in the curve pattern were sequenced. Five mutations were detected: one pathogenic, two of uncertain significance, one benign, and one with conflicting clinical significance. Point genetic variants were identified in four of the five exons analyzed. The real-time polymerase chain reaction – high resolution melting curve technique proved useful for searching for point mutations along the CFTR gene sequence, which, in combination with Sanger sequencing, will allow for the identification of new variants in the Cuban population
