Language, Ethno-nationalism and the South African university

    Get PDF
This article presents a conceptual analysis of the relations between language, ethnicity, and nationalism – within the domain of the university. While an analytical distinction is commonly madbetween “ethnicity” and “nationalism,” here “ethno-nationalism” is used to highlight aspects of cultural continuity between these constructs and to draw attention to problematic “telementational” assumptions about the vehicular role of “languages” in influential modernist theories of nationalism (notably Ernest Gellner and Benedict Anderson). The empirical focus of the article falls on long-run institutional changes in the South African university system; and on the deployment of ideas about ethnicity, nationalism, language, and race. While assumptions about the vehicular capacity of languages have deep roots in the colonial and apartheid periods, these also feature prominently in post-apartheid debates on the transformation of the university system

Axing the Rainbow: Does Fallism reconfigure post-apartheid nationhood in South Africa?

    Get PDF
Today, the Rainbow Nation as the central metaphor for postapartheid South Africa falls short of serving as a unifying identification marker due to its tendency to gloss over contrasting living realities of diversified identities and ongoing systemic discrimination. The South African Fallism movements – the student-driven protests against neocolonial structures in academic institutions – spearheaded public criticism with the current state of ongoing social disparity in South Africa and revived the critique of so-called rainbowism, i.e., the belief that a colour-blind society can be created. In an application of Critical Discourse Analysis focusing on mythical metaphors, this article asks to what extent the new president Cyril Ramaphosa in his maiden State of the Nation Address projected a post-Zuma South African nation and answered to the challenges posed by Fallists

Is it possible to solve the dispute between realism and constructivism?

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to engage in a debate on the conflict between realism and constructivism that occurred between Jaroslav Peregrin and Tomáš Marvan, on the pages of journal Filosofie dnes. The discussion developed as a reaction to Marvanʼs book Realismus a relativismus. In his book, Marvan defends specific kind of realism, criticizing relativistic positions. Peregrin claims that this conflict cannot be resolved, because in the end, both sides are irrefutable and arguments for and against leads to deadlock. On the other hand, Marvan claims that conflict can be resolved in favour of realism. Presented paper defines itself against both claims and proposes solution for the conflict. The solution is to dissolve the conflict using a hybrid concept that can overcome the problems of realism and constructivism. The paper is divided to three main parts. The first part deals with Marvan´s realism. The source of the conflict is main topic of second part and last part deals with the concept that can overcome the conflict

    Augustine’s Self-Knowledge in Animals

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on Augustine’s concept of self-knowledge or self-awareness in non-rational animals through examining the relation between external senses, internal sense and rationality. The explanation of what causes motion in non-rational living beings is quite puzzling in the case of animal’s self-perception – for what reason do they move, sense or live. This motivation is also connected to the self-preservation principle, which is one of the two sources of confusion regarding self-perception in animals; the other one is the ability of internal sense or anima to perceive themselves, other animals and humans as alive – in spite of the fact that this can in no way be sensory information. This paper focuses on Augustine’s concept of self-knowledge or self-awareness in non-rational animals through examining the relation between external senses, internal sense and rationality. Henri Bergson and analytical philosophy

    No full text
During his lifetime, Henri Bergson achieved great popularity. Despite a certain decline of the attention paid to his philosophy, his work kept inspiring authors even in the second half of twentieth century, among others Gilles Deleuze. Nevertheless, the analytical philosophy has rather ignored Bergson so far.  Though at first sight his philosophy seems orthogonal with the analytical tradition, his work contains ideas which could prove productive for the analytical thought. We will focus on Bergson’s approach to wrong questions which in many respects resembles that of logical positivists. Then we will propose how Bergson’s ideas can contribute to the theory of rule-following and normativistic theories of meaning. Both issues will be rather just sketeched, a more detailed elaboration remains yet to be pursued as further work
