The River Goddess and Melody-Makers in Nigeria: A Cultural View on Majek Fashek and Victor Uwaifo
Get PDFThe art of music-making is a mental/creative activity. However, spiritual influence cannot be ruled out in the process of constructing music. The mental activity is akin to the deployment of the intellect, while the spiritual influence could be as a result of a direct encounter or impartation by a spirit being through dream/vision as typified by two Nigerian performing artists, Majek Fashek and Victor Uwaifo, who are the foci of this study. Exploring the concept of esotericism with emphasis on music performance, this article contends that although music-making is a mental/creative activity, spiritual or extra-mental influences supervene, with particular reference to the lives and performance careers of the two selected African musicians/media celebrities from Benin City in Nigeria. In doing this, it uses historical-analytic, key informant interview (KII), and direct observation methods to critically reflect on how the supernatural influences their music-making activities

Get PDFThis article unravels the manipulation of language and nonlinguistic communication strategies in political and sports discourses to negotiate various identities in Kenya. Kenya is multilingual with over 42 stable and unstable languages whose users are, historically, “forced” into one country. Through a historical sociolinguistic approach, the article analyses code choice, stereotypes, jokes and nicknames for ethnic and other identity negotiation. It shows that negative ethnicity based on “we” versus “they” dichotomies enhances ethnic cleavages but Sheng pervades ethnic boundaries and politicians use it to endear and identify themselves with the youth. The present article calls for responsible language use
Five Approaches to Ethics of Sexuality? The Consequences of the Asymmetric Argument by David Benatar for the Ethics of Sexual Behaviour
No full textTato práce se zabývá možnými přístupy k etice sexuality, jejich klady i zápory. Etikou sexuality zde není míněno moralizování, stejně tak sexualitou není míněn pouze koitus, pohlavní chování je zde míněno v širším významu tedy včetně rozlehlé oblasti lidského svádění, okolků či otálení. Popsány jsou čtyři klasické přístupy k etice sexuality: tradicionalistický, romantický, marxisticko-feministický a liberální, avšak uvážen je i přístup antinatalistický, který vyplývá z asymetrického argumentu Davida Benatara uveřejněného v jeho práci Nebýt či být. Benatarův antinatalizmus totiž vytváří etiku pohlavního chování, v níž pouze sex, který nevede k rozmnožení, může být morální. I když je tento pátý, antinatalistický přístup značně kontroverzní a zdaleka ne intuitivní, extrémnost jeho pozic se příliš neliší od tradicionalistického pohledu, v němž je morální pouze sex k rozmnožení vedoucí, tyto dva přístupy tak lze postavit do přímé opozice jako dvě krajní možnosti uvažování o etice pohlavního chování. Roli střední cesty v takovém řazení potom zaujme liberální přístup, který jako jediný etiku sexuality nevidí jako etiku odlišnou od jiných lidských činností.This paper deals with possible approaches to ethics of sexuality, with their advantages and disadvantages. Ethics of sexuality is not considered in terms of moralising, also sexuality is not limited only to coitus but it is considered in its broader meaning including the vast area of human seduction, hesitation and ado. Four classic approaches to sexual ethics are described: traditionalistic, romantic, Marxist-feminist and liberal, though, the antinatalist approach based on the asymmetric argument by David Benatar published in his work Better Never to Have Been is considered too. Benatar’s antinatalism creates sexual ethics in which only non-procreative sex can be moral. Even though this fifth, antinatalist approach is quite controversial and is not intuitive at all, its extremity is not very different from the traditionalistic approach, in which only procreative sex is moral. When considering sexual ethics, these two approaches can be put in opposition as two extremes, while liberal approach, the only one which does not see sexual ethics different from ethics of any other human conduct will play a part of the middle path between extremes

No full textČlánek z oblasti analytické metafyziky se věnuje problému, zda vágní objekty implikují vágní (neurčitou) identitu. Pokud by tomu tak bylo, pak lze s Evansem argumentovat tak, že nemohou existovat, protože vágní identita vede k nekoherenci. Studie představuje argument pro zmíněnou implikaci (Weathersonovský argument) a ukazuje, jak se jeho závěru vyhnout. Evansův argument předpokládá, že jména v tvrzeních o neurčité identitě referují určitě. Nejlepší cesta, jak se celému problému vyhnout, je tedy ukázat, že vágní objekty sice implikují vágní (neurčitou) identitu, ale v takových tvrzeních o identitě vystupují výrazy, které nereferují určitě. Tím vyřešíme i námitku, že sice tvrzení o identitě mezi vágním objektem a jeho přesnou realizací není neurčité, ale neurčité je tvrzení o identitě dvou vágních objektů.The paper in the field of analytic metaphysics focuses on a problem whether vague objects imply vague (indeterminate) identity. If this be so, one can argue with Evans that such objects cannot exist because vague identity leads to incoherence. The study presents an argument for such an implication (Weathersonian argument) and shows how to evade its conclusion. Evans’ argument presupposes that names in indeterminate identity claims refer determinately. Hence the best way to evade the problem as a whole is to show that vague objects do imply vague (indeterminate) identity, but in such statements of identity, there appear expressions not referring determinately. By this we also solve the objection that the assertion of identity between a vague object and its precise realization is not indeterminate, but what is indeterminate is the identity statement concerning two vague objects
Hilbert’s arithmetisation of geometry
No full textTato práce se podrobně věnuje způsobu, jakým David Hilbert (1862–1943) pojal aritmetizaci geometrie v knize Grundlagen der Geometrie z roku 1899. Nejprve stručně představíme Hilbertovy předchůdce z téže doby, kteří buď po změnách v založení geometrie volali, nebo je již sami prostřednictvím axiomaticko-deduktivní metody zapracovali. Neopomeneme přitom, co dílu předcházelo v dřívějších Hilbertových přednáškách. Následně se pokusíme nastínit obsah prvních dvou kapitol knihy a vysvětlit dobové i věcné souvislosti, nutné k jejich pochopení. Představíme způsob implicitních definic základních pojmů a vztahů v axiomech, a dále Hilbertovo rozdělení axiomů do skupin, přičemž se zejména zaměříme na axiomy spojitosti v kontextu s otázkou o její bezespornosti. K tomu popíšeme konstrukci aritmetického modelu axiomů geometrie, který Hilbert pro důkaz bezespornosti používá. V závěru se pokusíme nastínit hlavní důvody, které Hilberta k napsání díla vedly, a některé klíčové důsledky jeho pojetí axiomatiky geometrie.In this article, we describe how David Hilbert (1862–1943) understood the arithmetisation of geometry in the book Grundlagen der Geometrie from 1899. First, we introduce Hilbert’s forerunners from the same period who were either asking for changes in the foundations of geometry or implemented them by axiomatic-deductive method, and we do not omit the work included in Hilbert’s previous lectures. Further, we try to explain the contents of the first two chapters of the book and present the context which is necessary to understand them. We present the implicit definitions of the elementary notions and relationships in the axioms and Hilberts division of the axioms into groups. We focus more on the axioms of continuity in context with the problem of the consistency. As an aside, we describe the construction of the arithmetical model of the axioms of geometry that Hilbert uses for the consistency proof. At the end, we strive to show Hilbert’s main intentions for writing the book and we mention some of the implications of his treatmen

Ukazuje, že přestože se klip Přemluv bábu od své americké předlohy zásadně neliší v obecné struktuře, deklarovaném cíli či motivické výbavě, v jiných persvazivně významných ohledech se původnímu klipu vzdaluje. Rozdíly jsou patrné zejména v odlišné konstrukci publika, v jiném situování mluvčích a v topickém výběru vyjádřeném jinými stylistickými prostředky.The text compares the persuasive strategies used in similar political videos, The Great Schlep (2008) and Přemluv bábu ( Convince your grandma, 2010). It shows that even though Přemluv bábu does not differ from its American original in the overall structure, the declared goal or the theme, it moves away from the original clip in other persuasively important aspects. The differences are especially evident in a construction of audience, the role of the speaker, and in the topical choice expressed by particular stylistic instruments
