The Impact of Oral Cancer in Argentina: Analysis of Risk Factors and Health Responses in 2024

    No full text
In the year 2024, oral cancer was highlighted as a significant public health problem in Argentina, reflecting global trends and country-specific challenges. Oral cancer, included within malignant neoplasms, was characterized by an abnormal growth of cells that affected the oral cavity and sometimes spread to other parts of the body through metastasis. The disease mainly affected men over 50 years of age, although an increase in cases linked to the human papillomavirus (HPV) was observed in younger people. The geographical distribution of oral cancer in Argentina revealed significant inequalities. Northern provinces, with lower levels of socioeconomic development and limited access to health services, had higher rates compared to metropolitan regions. Risk factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and poor diets contributed to this disparity. Although prevention and education campaigns were intensified, their reach was insufficient in some rural and peripheral areas. The impact of oral cancer was not only limited to physical health, but also affected patients\u27 quality of life, imposing a considerable emotional and economic burden. The public health system faced difficulties in providing advanced treatments due to lack of resources and unequal access. However, government efforts to strengthen primary care, train professionals and promote HPV vaccination as a key preventive measure were highlighted.Despite the challenges, prevention and early diagnosis were identified as essential strategies to reduce the burden of oral cancer and improve health outcomes in the countr

    No full text
Introduction: Denture stomatitis is a commonly used term to refer to mucosal alterations in the oral cavity of denture-wearing patients. Objective: To describe the behavior of denture stomatitis in adults over 45 years of age. Method: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on patients belonging to Medical Office 131 of the "Abel Santamaría Cuadrado" Hospital, Pinar del Río, from January 2022 to December 2023. The population consisted of 479 patients, and the sample included 85 patients selected by non-probabilistic expert criteria sampling. An interview and clinical examination were conducted for all patients. Absolute and percentage frequencies, Chi-square, and Odds ratio were used as summary statistical measures. Results: Type II stomatitis predominated in female patients over 60 years old. All grade III patients had been using dentures for 8 years or more. Incorrect use of dentures, ill-fitting dentures, and poor oral hygiene were the predominant risk factors. Inadequate knowledge levels were most common in patients aged 77 and older. Conclusions: In the studied population, type II denture stomatitis predominated in female patients over 60 years old, which was associated with incorrect use of the prosthetic device, poor oral hygiene, ill-fitting dentures, lack of replacement for more than 4 years, continuous use, and insufficient knowledge about their care and management, which worsens with age

Risk factors and preventive strategies in oral cancer: a comprehensive review

    No full text
Introduction: Oral cancer was identified as a global health problem due to its high morbidity and mortality. This malignant neoplasm, originating in the oral mucosa, affected structures such as the lips, tongue and hard palate, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most prevalent, representing 90% of the cases. The main risk factors included tobacco and alcohol consumption, with a synergistic effect that facilitated carcinogenesis. Other elements, such as diets low in fruits and vegetables, exposure to radiation, immunosuppression and unfavorable socioeconomic conditions, also contributed significantly. Early detection of premalignant lesions, such as leukoplakias and erythroplasias, was crucial to prevent progression to advanced malignant stages.Development: The study highlighted that tobacco consumption generated thermal, chemical and systemic damage to the oral mucosa, while alcohol promoted desiccation and immunodeficiency, increasing the risk of oral cancer. In addition, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables offered a protective effect, while excessive consumption of red meat and spicy foods increased exposure to carcinogens. Factors such as the use of ill-fitting dentures, viral infections, especially HPV, and prolonged radiation were relevant. Diagnosis by TNM classification allowed determining prognosis and directing effective treatments. Conclusions: The article concluded that oral cancer control required a comprehensive approach based on prevention, education, early diagnosis and timely treatment. The active participation of stomatologists in early detection and education of the population was essential. The importance of implementing educational programs and strengthening primary care to reduce risk factors, improve survival rates and guarantee a better quality of life in vulnerable populations was emphasize

Anatomical and functional concepts of the temporomandibular joint

    No full text
The temporomandibular joint articulates the mandible with the lower surface of the base of the skull; it constitutes a fundamental component of the masticatory apparatus. The objective was to describe the temporomandibular joint from the embryological, histological and morphofunctional point of view, taking into account the importance of this knowledge for dentists. A bibliographic review was carried out taking into account the most up-to-date scientific literature on the subject. 15 bibliographies were used. Documentary analysis, analytical-synthetic and historical-logical analysis methods were used for the development of the research. The study of the embryology, histology, anatomy and physiology of the temporomandibular joint reveals its complexity and vital importance in oral and general health; in addition, it allows us to understand its biomechanics and the distribution of forces during mastication. A comprehensive understanding of this joint is of great importance for dentists, as it will allow the timely detection and treatment of temporomandibular disorders that negatively influence the quality of life of patients.

Introduction: The health system aims to ensure the improvement of both individual and collective health. In Argentina, where health is recognized by the National Constitution itself as a right, the system is mixed where social security, the offer of public management services, and the private sector coexist) and access to health care is assumed to be guaranteed. For central cardiovascular surgical procedures, consultation with a dentist is mandatory in order to avoid infectious endocarditis, a very common complication. Objective: to evaluate the type of care that patients access when this consultation is indicated from a public hospital that does not have the service in the hospital itself.Method: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out, where 65 medical records of patients who underwent valve replacement surgeries at the El Cruce Hospital in Florencio Varela were evaluated, in the period from January to December 2021. An observational guide was used to collect data. Results: It was determined that 75.5% of the patients treated did not have social security coverage, compared to 24.5% who did have social security or prepaid insurance, and that of the former, 97% accessed the consultation through the public health system, leaving only 3% within the so-called “disadjustment area” where the system does not fulfill its purpose. Conclusions: The Argentine public health system, specifically in health region VI, works correctly

Periodontal pathogens in the appearance and progression of chronic periodontitis

Periodontal diseases are considered a public health problem due to their high prevalence worldwide, so the authors set out to describe the role of periodontal pathogens in the onset and progression of chronic periodontitis. The documentary analysis method was used and a total of 18 bibliographies were reviewed. Current scientific evidence supports the association between periodontal pathogens and the development of periodontitis, demonstrating that bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia and Treponema denticola play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease by triggering inflammatory responses and promoting the destruction of tooth-supporting tissues

Cardiovascular surgery and the importance of dental consultation

    No full text
Introduction: A health system is based on meeting the needs of the population, which presents cultural and social differences when defining these needs and health-related problems and when using available health care services. Methods: A bibliographic review was conducted using the terms "health system", "dental consultation", "cardiovascular surgery" to search databases.Development: Valve surgery involves a comprehensive patient care process that covers from the request to leaving the surgical center, with the aim of providing information, comfort and safety. This process includes several phases such as surgical indication and presurgical evaluation, whose purpose is to identify risk factors and optimize perioperative care to reduce morbidity and mortality. Conclusions: The oral cavity can contribute to the development of pathologies such as caries and periodontal disease, which are risk factors for cardiovascular conditions. Infective endocarditis (IE), a bacterial infection of the heart valves, may be associated with oral foci in 10-20% of cases. For this reason, organizations such as the American Heart Association recommend dental consultation before valve surgery to minimize risks

Introduction: Oral lesions are more common in older individuals with old or damaged dentures. Objective: To characterize oral lesions associated with the use and care of dentures in older adults. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on patients from the "Antonio Briones Montoto" Provincial Teaching Stomatological Clinic, Pinar del Río, during the period 2019-2021. Universe: 3886 patients aged 60 or over, rehabilitated with prostheses. Sample (non-probabilistic intentional): 250 elderly individuals with oral paraprosthetic lesions. Data were processed using absolute and relative frequencies and non-parametric Chi-square tests. Results: Oral lesions associated with denture use remain a highly prevalent health problem in the elderly, with the main causes being the absence of preventive measures, inadequate oral hygiene, and lack of knowledge about denture use and care. Conclusions: The study population was characterized by the presence of subprosthetic stomatitis and poor oral hygiene, caused by total acrylic prosthetic appliances; most of which were in poor condition and had been used for more than 5 years. The predominance of nighttime use of the prosthetic appliance conditioned the presence of the detected oral lesions
