Social determinants and oral health conditions in the elderly
Introduction: In older adults, the social determinants of health directly influence the health-disease process; oral health is no exception. Objective: Determine the behavior of social determinants and oral health conditions in older adults. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on 221 individuals aged 60 years and over from office 19, La Demajagua, in June 2024. Questioning and clinical examination of the oral cavity were used, with prior informed consent of the participants and caregivers. The variables studied were: age, sex, occupation, economic well-being, family functioning, housing conditions, eating habits and oral health conditions. Results: The most represented age group was 60 to 74 years old with 72,8 %, with a predominance of males. Only 32,6 % of older adults worked and 11,8 % had good oral health conditions. 56,1 % of those examined reported not having economic well-being, and 73,8 % presented a regular oral health condition. Dysfunctional families predominated in 56,6 %, 46,2 % living in homes with regular conditions and 58,8 % with inadequate eating habits. Conclusions: The unfavorable behavior of the analyzed determinants reveals their negative influence on the oral health condition of older adults
Ozone therapy in periodontal disease in type 2 diabetic patients
Introduction: periodontopathies are frequent in the world population and Cuba does not escape from this situation. In the search for more effective treatments, ozone therapy is a therapeutic alternative.
Objective: to determine the efficacy of oleozon in the treatment of periodontal disease in diabetic patients.
Methods: quasi-experimental study of therapeutic intervention in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 and periodontal disease who attended Periodontics consultation at the "Hermanos Saiz" Stomatological Clinic of San Juan y Martínez, Pinar del Río in the period November 2023-April 2024. Universe: 125 patients. By means of intentional sampling by expert criteria, the sample was 96 patients, divided into 2 homogeneous groups: group I (oleozon) and group II (aqueous chlorhexidine 0.2 %). The Russell Periodontal Index, a revised WHO form to determine prevalence and severity of periodontal disease, was applied. The results were expressed in absolute and percentage frequencies and the non-parametric Chi-square test.
Results: Male patients and the 50-60 years age group predominated with higher numbers of advanced periodontitis in both groups before and after treatment. Bleeding on probing was eliminated 21 days after treatment in both groups. Most of the patients were cured after 21 days and the treatment applied was successful in both treatment groups.
Conclusions: Oleozon is an effective drug in the treatment of chronic inflammatory periodontal diseases in diabetic patient
Evaluation of tooth angulation and vestibular bone table in anterosuperior teeth prior to immediate implant placement. Descriptive study with cone beams computed tomography
The present study evaluated dental angulation and vestibular bone table thickness in anterosuperior teeth in order to optimize immediate implant placement. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 30 teeth in 15 patients were analyzed, considering the distance between the amelo-cementary boundary and the bone crest, as well as tooth angulation. The results indicated that bone thickness varies at different heights and that the average angulation is greater in men than in women. However, a clear correlation between bone thickness and dental angulation could not be established due to the sample size. The study highlights the importance of these factors in achieving an esthetic and functional result in implant dentistry, suggesting the need for further research to validate these findings and optimize implantation techniques
Characterization of the tartamudez from the point of view logofoniátrico
Stuttering is the most common speech disorder in children. Its etiology is multifactorial. The diagnosis is based on a correct anamnesis and clinical examination. Despite the fact that a large number of cases resolve spontaneously, treatment should not be delayed for more than a year, because long-standing forms have a worse prognosis. In cases where stuttering is associated with other neurological symptoms, other pathologies must be ruled out. A literature review was carried out, finding 35 articles in total, of which only 15 fulfilled the validity criterion in order to characterize the most frequent verbal fluency disorders from the logofoniatric point of view. Studies carried out by different authors show that stuttering is considered one of the chronic logofoniatric diseases that occur more frequently in the child population, not only at the national level, but also in our province, which shows that the knowledge of the family about the management and treatment of this condition in their children
Evaluation of the preference and recommendation of dentists regarding the use of bamboo toothbrushes
The present study evaluated the knowledge, use, and perception of bamboo brushes among 35 health professionals. Although 97.1% are aware of these brushes, only 22.9% use them, indicating a significant gap between knowledge and adoption. Some 67.7% of the respondents showed interest in trying them, but only 35.3% recommend them, influenced by the perception of their effectiveness. In addition, 80% know that plastic toothbrushes take more than 70 years to disintegrate, but 91.2% have never received information on how to properly recycle a toothbrush, highlighting the need for sustainability education. Despite the willingness of 60% to switch to bamboo brushes, the lack of information and education on recycling remains an obstacle. The study concludes that the adoption of sustainable practices requires increased awareness and education on recycling and plastic waste managemen
Pleomorphic adenoma in an adolescent, about a clinical case
Introduction: salivary gland tumors in children represent a low percentage of pediatric head and neck tumors; most of them are diagnosed in association with the Parotid salivary gland and present a higher proportion of malignancy than in adults. Objective: to present a case with a diagnosis of Pleomorphic Adenoma: clinical symptoms, complementary examinations, treatment and evolution. Case presentation: female patient, 13 years old, from a rural background and white race, attended the Maxillofacial Surgery consultation, in good general condition, accompanied by her parents, due to an increase in volume of a hard consistency, not fixed to deep planes ( mobile), asymptomatic, of 7 months of evolution and 3 cm in length located in the left parotid region. Ultrasound of soft tissues and neck was indicated, as well as contrast-enhanced facial mass tomography, which showed a mass in relation to the left parotid gland that captured contrast. In addition, complementary examinations and a fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) were performed, resulting in a benign parotid gland tumor (Pleomorphic Adenoma). Superficial parotidectomy was performed with preservation of the facial nerve. The patient progressed satisfactorily and continues to be followed up by consultation. Conclusions: pleomorphic adenomas are discovered in practice as slowly growing asymptomatic masses; the size is variable and will always depend on the stage at which it is detected
Theoretical-strategic conceptions of the values formation process in stomatology students
Introduction: in this research, by analogy to the definitions of knowledge and skill invariants, the concept of value invariants is defined, it is based on the fact that responsibility, solidarity, industriousness and dignity constitute the value invariants. Development: a pedagogical strategy for the formation of values in students of the Dentistry career is presented, which consists of five stages and actions in each of them, which is conceived in two dimensions; The first is the teaching, in which, on the basis of the logic and components of the educational teaching process, a hierarchical treatment of values is suggested, on the basis of which is the systematization of the value invariants and, on this, the proposes to address the rest of the values of the social assignment; The second dimension is the extra-teaching dimension, in which the modes of action of the values to be formed in the social activity of the students can be valued in greater richness. Conclusions: the fact is revealed and argued that responsibility, solidarity and industriousness make up a dialectical triad, which on the axiological level becomes the driving source of the value formation process, while dignity constitutes the cell of said process.
Functional aesthetic rehabilitation and its impact on self-esteem
The study analyzes the relationship between dental esthetic rehabilitation and self-esteem in adult patients at the Inter-American Open University. The research focuses on how improving dental appearance through prosthetic-aesthetic interventions positively impacts patients\u27 perception of themselves and their overall well-being. Using a qualitative approach, interviews were conducted and clinical documents were reviewed to capture the experiences of 11 patients. The results show that, following rehabilitation, patients experienced a significant increase in their self-esteem, satisfaction and emotional well-being. The study underscores the importance of addressing both functional and esthetic aspects in dentistry, highlighting how a healthy smile influences quality of life and social interaction, reinforcing the need for comprehensive care that includes psychological and emotional consideration
The logophoniatric articulatory apparatus
Communication from the socio-historical point of view arose in the very beginnings of humanity as a process of exchange of messages understood in a symbolic way. That is, from the first moments in which the human being faces the process of transformation of nature to obtain from it the necessary elements for its subsistence. In order to describe the morphofunctional characteristics of the organ systems that participate in the phonoarticulatory processes for the production and emission of the voice, a review of the literature was carried out, finding a total of 50 articles of which 20 met the validity criteria. The human organism is conceived as a whole, an example of which is the nervous and hormonal regulation of all its functions. Hence, the organs in isolation cannot perform those functions that are inherent to the entire organism
Temporomandibular Disorders and Climacteric Disorders in Argentina: Advances and Challenges for Comprehensive Care
In 2024, the Stomatognathic System (ES) and Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) acquired a particular relevance in Argentina due to the demographic, economic and health changes affecting its constantly changing population. The aging population structure and the increase in life expectancy generated direct implications in the prevalence and management of TMDs, especially in women during climacteric and menopause. The socioeconomic context presented contrasts, with growing access to health services thanks to public policies focused on primary health care, although inequalities persisted between urban and rural areas. These inequalities affected the quality of the specialized treatments needed for TMDs, aggravating the situation of vulnerable women due to economic barriers and lack of information.During the climacteric period, hormonal changes had a negative impact on oral and maxillofacial health, exacerbating TMDs, which are more prevalent in women than in men, with a ratio of three to one. Factors such as emotional stress and psychological disorders, intensified by inflation and economic uncertainty, played a crucial role in the etiology of TMDs. The importance of preventive strategies, such as educational campaigns and professional training to identify and treat TMDs early was highlighted. However, the limitations of the public health system and the high costs of specialized treatments restricted their scope. Despite advances in academic training and interdisciplinary approach, the need for more comprehensive public policies that prioritize women\u27s health became evident. Argentina faced the challenge of consolidating an equitable model that would guarantee access to effective treatments, allowing women in climacteric conditions to live with dignity and wellbein
