    Oral chromatin detection: an example of scientific and technological development management at an Angolan university

    Introduction: The Faculty of Medicine of Benguela, province of Angola, has the social responsibility to respond to the perceived health needs of the population with its technological resources, its students in training, linked to one of the most important substantive processes, which is scientific research.Objective: To implement the sexual chromatin technique, as a management of the scientific and technological innovation process of the Faculty of Medicine of the Katyavala Bwila University (FMUKB)Methods: A descriptive observational study was carried out, reporting a series of cases with sexual differentiation disorders (SDD). The technique was standardized with the Giemsa reagent and the procedure was carried out on four cases with SDD.Results: Genetic sex was defined based on sexual chromatin in the four cases with SDD. Three cases were chromatin positive, with clinical suspicion of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, while one case was chromatin negative, with clinical suspicion of a 5 α reductase deficiency.Conclusion: It is possible to define the chromatin sex in the cases studied, a result of great importance for the clinical management and therapeutic strategy by the multidisciplinary team. It is demonstrated that the monitors of the Medical Genetics discipline are protagonists in the management of scientific processes and the capacity for technological innovation in the faculty.     Anaphylactic shock: a review of the pathophysiology and therapeutic management

    Introduction: Anaphylactic shock is a severe allergic reaction that can occur rapidly and be life-threatening. Understanding it is crucial for medical care, especially in settings where medications are administered or procedures are performed that can trigger allergic reactions.Objective: To review the etiological, pathophysiological, clinical, and therapeutic features of anaphylactic shock.Development: The most common causes of anaphylactic shock include allergies to food, insect stings, medications, and latex. Pathophysiologically, it is characterized by massive release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, leading to vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and bronchoconstriction. Clinically, it presents with symptoms such as urticaria, edema, respiratory distress, and hypotension. Diagnosis is based on clinical history and symptom presentation. Immediate treatment includes the administration of adrenaline, which acts as a vasoconstrictor and bronchodilator, and may be followed by antihistamines and corticosteroids.Conclusions: Anaphylactic shock is a medical emergency that requires immediate recognition and treatment. Education and preparation of medical personnel are essential to ensure an appropriate response to this condition. Early identification of triggers can prevent future episodes and improve patient outcomes

    Introduction: the article addresses the professional training of the dentist and the role of the professor in the formation of values in students, in the conditions of a new Cuban university, in a neoliberal globalized world with the predominance of North American imperialism, and its allies. Objective: to base the training process on values by establishing interdisciplinary relationships in students of the Dentistry career. Methods: methods such as documentary, historical-logical and analytical-synthetic analysis were used. 27 bibliographies were used. Development: a theoretical framework is proposed to establish interdisciplinary relationships from the Biological Bases of Stomatology to Comprehensive Dentistry with the subjects History of Cuba and Philosophy and Health. Conclusions: for the formation of values in the Dentistry career, it is necessary to establish interdisciplinary relationships in the teaching-educational process as a guarantee for the future performance of students in the practice of the profession, guaranteeing the comprehensive training of the professional that allows him to defend the conquests of the Revolution with an internationalist, humanist, supportive and responsible attitude.     Level of knowledge of dentists about technologies and their impact on dental practice management

    Introduction: the use of technologies in the dental office streamlines patient care, facilitates the exchange of information and its administrative management. Objective: to evaluate the level of knowledge of dentists about technologies and their use in the administration of the dental practice. Method:  observational,  descriptive,  cross-sectional  study  in  the  period  January-August  2024  of  dentists who work in private offices or comprehensive centers under their charge, belonging to the Autonomous City  of  Buenos  Aires  and  Greater  Buenos  Aires.  The  universe  and  the  sample  coincided  from  a  non-probabilistic convenience sampling and the established inclusion and exclusion criteria, for a total of 100 dental professionals. The information was processed through Excel, to generate graphs and percentages that allowed a better understanding. Results: of the total number of professionals surveyed, 61 % were female and 39 % were male. More than half, 55 % of the respondents were general dentists, while another group with a greater presence was that of implantology specialists with 9 %, 68 % use the traditional form or model of clinical history, while the remaining 32 % already work with digital models, 66 % do not use software for diagnosis and design of dental treatments; the other 34 % do use it. Conclusions: it is of great importance to train dentists in all aspects of administration, restructure their training, change the profile of new professionals and educate them to implement technological tools in their offices

    Clinical Update on Oropharyngeal Candidiasis in HIV Patients

    Introduction: Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OOP) is a candidiasis of the oral mucosa, which is caused by yeast species of the genus Candida spp. and develops in individuals with predisposing factors such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.  Objectives: Update the clinical presentation of COF in HIV-infected individuals. Material and methods: A descriptive and retrospective bibliographic review of documents published by scientific societies that describe the current clinical approach to diagnosis will be carried out. For the bibliographic search, works published in recent years will be included and several documentary sources will be reviewed considering the keywords, to identify relevant and pertinent scientific articles in English and Spanish pages, in different databases such as: PubMed, Elsevier, NCBI, Google Scholar, medical bibliography and clinical practice guides will also be attached. Results: OFC presents clinically in a variety of ways, pseudomembranous, hypertrophic, erythematous and as angular cheilitis, although when the patient is assisted it is common to find mucosal lesions that are observed as whitish areas and erythema in the oropharyngeal region. Conclusions: It is important to consider its relationship with HIV infection, since it may be the first opportunistic manifestation in an individual who is unaware of his or her infection status

    Tooth whitening: esthetic benefits and clinical challenges

    Introduction: Tooth whitening has been widely used as an esthetic procedure, growing in demand since its initial description in 1864. This process uses chemical agents such as hydrogen peroxide, capable of oxidizing chromogens present in tooth enamel, lightening the teeth. However, its continued use can have side effects, including demineralization of the enamel and alterations in the oral microbiota, such as the growth of Candida albicans.Development: Several studies have analyzed the effects of hydrogen peroxide at different concentrations. At high concentrations, such as 35%, its capacity to alter the morphology and mineral content of dental enamel, increasing its roughness and favoring the adhesion of microorganisms has been demonstrated. The formation of biofilms by bacteria and fungi, such as Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans, has been the subject of debate, with contradictory results regarding their prevalence on surfaces treated with bleaching agents. This study found that the control group, without peroxide treatment, presented greater adhesion of C. albicans, which could be attributed to an antimicrobial effect of the oxidizing agent.Conclusion: Tooth whitening, although effective as an esthetic procedure, presents clinical challenges due to its potential adverse effects. The findings highlight the need for further research to fully understand the impact of these agents on the oral microbiota and enamel. Future studies should include larger samples and employ advanced techniques to improve the validity of the results and optimize the safety of the procedures

    Conquering Calcification: How PriciGuide® system is Transforming Endodontics. A Case Report

    Introduction: Traumatic injuries are a common cause of pulp canal obliteration (PCO), frequently affecting the maxillary central incisors. PCO presents significant challenges for root canal treatment due to procedural complexities and risks of iatrogenic errors. The PriciGuide® system, offers an innovative solution for guided endodontics, enhancing precision, visibility, and efficiency.Case Report: A 26-year-old male presented with a discoloured upper front tooth, tender on percussion and non-responsive to cold tests. Radiographic evaluation revealed a widened periodontal ligament (PDL) space, and the tooth was diagnosed with PCO and symptomatic apical periodontitis. The patient opted for root canal treatment using the PriciGuide® system. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and a diagnostic impression were used to create a customized guide. The PriciGuide® system facilitated precise access cavity preparation, and the root canal was instrumented with Hyflex CM files and irrigated with sodium hypochlorite with Twin Kleen enhanced by passive ultrasonic activation. The tooth was obturated with gutta-percha and restored with an all-ceramic crown. At a one-year follow-up, the tooth remained asymptomatic both clinically and radiographically.Conclusion: The PriciGuide® system effectively addressed the challenges of root canal treatment in a tooth with PCO, ensuring precise access, preservation of tooth structure, and optimal treatment outcomes. This case highlights the system\u27s potential to advance guided endodontics and improve clinical success rates in complex case

    3D biomodels to integrate an imaging diagnosis as an aid in learning clinical diagnostics in dentistry

    The work presented here corresponds to the purpose of the PAPIT Project IN306823 Emerging pedagogies and open educational movement, particularly in digital and 3D printed format; applied in learning activities in Health Sciences, in dentistry. In the salud area, the challenge is to attract the attention and interest of students to learn anatomy, pathology and promote the integration of knowledge of the basic areas referred to above in the process of identifying lesions, in that formative experience focused on the use of radiographic images of patients. The learning experiences that are shared incorporate 3D printed models that have been generated with DICOM data obtained from CT scans, which are transformed into a geometry data. STL (Blue Sky Plan software) data are transformed into slices (SLICER) for 3D printing in the CURA program. These resources have been a support for teaching and learning. The 3D models are called Biomodels and have been tested in small groups as part of the Design Thiniking methodology; the results have been identified through open interview and online forms

    Strategy for improving the work of tutors in workplace education in dentistry

    Introduction: The role of the tutor in the comprehensive training of future health professionals is one of the methodological lines of work that has been developed over several academic years to improve the teaching process.Objective: To design a strategy to improve the work of tutors in the Stomatology degree program.Methods: Qualitative research was conducted to design a working methodology with the aim of improving the performance and development of the teaching staff as tutors in this teaching activity. Theoretical and empirical methods were used, such as surveys and document analysis, taking into account the provisions of the regulations and governing documents of Higher Education in Medical Sciences.Results: The presence of a novice faculty was found, composed mainly of instructors with limited experience as tutors. The difficulties observed may influence the acquisition of skills and habits in stomatological practice that are intended to be achieved by graduates of the Stomatology program.Conclusions: The strategy designed constituted a teaching tool to guide tutors in their educational work and to strive for excellence in the training processes of the Stomatology Degree Program
