Eschatological quests in the 18th century region of Epirus: the iconographic cycle of the Apocalypse of John at the Faneromeni church near Fortosi Village, Katsanochoria, 1787

During the 18th century the eschatological concerns of the enslaved Greeks intensified, while at the same time their expectations for liberation from Ottoman rule peaked. Especially in the region of Epirus, which suffered from mass Islamization, the expectation for the restoration of the Christian kingdom, as described in the Book of Revelation, might have led, in 1787, the inhabitants of Fortosi, Katsanochoria, to choose some scenes from the prophetic book of John for the decoration of the naos of the newly erected church of Faneromeni

A clay lagena from Hagia Sophia and Jewish piety in 11th-century Thessaloniki

The study presents a clay lagena with impressed and incised geometrical decoration dating to the mid-11th century discovered in Hagia Sophia’s western gallery in Thessaloniki. At least 14 lagenes similar in size and shape were identified from the same context likely locally made. What sets this vessel apart is the secondary Hebrew inscription «berakhah» ( הָכָרְּב ), meaning «blessing», revealing its Jewish ownership. This is the only movable archaeological find directly linked to the middle Byzantine Thessalonian Jews

Byzantium and Venice after the First Crusade: “Ratification” of imperial privileges through “pious” thefts of the relics (1123-1126)

The “Translatio mirifici martyris Isidori a Chio insula in civitatem venetam” is the testimony of an eyewitness of the Venetian campaign of the period 1122-1124, regarding the “pious” theft of the relic of St. Isidore that took place during the Venetian return trip from the Holy Land. The Saints, who from ports-stations on the commercial roads to the East, “accepted” to be transported to Venice during the period 1123-1126, ratified with their grace the commercial privileges of the Venetians that John II Komnenos refused to ratify

First report of Hemiberlesia cyanophylli (Signoret) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) in Tunisia and North Africa

    Get PDF
Hemiberlesia cyanophylli (Signoret, 1869) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae) was determined for the first time on Opuntia triacanthos Willd (Cactaceae) in a private garden at Akouda (Sousse, Tunisia) in 2022. The infestation was observed on the racket of O. triacanthos. This is the first record of H. cyanophylli in Tunisia, as well as for North Africa. Two other scale insects: Parlatoria oleae (Colvée, 1880) (Diaspididae) and Planococcus citri (Risso, 1813) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) were also recorded on other ornamental plant species respectively, i.e. Rosa indica (Rosaceae) and Kalanchoë sp. (Crassulaceae)

New findings of Isidella elongata (Esper, 1788) in the Levantine-Balearic demarcation (western Mediterranean Sea)

The bamboo coral Isidella elongata (Esper, 1788) is a near-endemic species of the Mediterranean Sea, which forms dense aggregations on bathyal muddy bottoms and contributes to the three-dimensional structure of bathyal environments. Isidella elongata populations have experienced a regression since the middle of the last century; it has been attributed to the impact of bottom trawling. In this work, we report the identification of I. elongata colonies, both dead and alive, during scientific surveys conducted in the western Mediterranean Sea. We also characterise the associated benthic and nekto-benthic assemblages and analyse the presence of the species relative to trawl fishing grounds. One field of I. elongata was identified off south-eastern Menorca, from photogrammetric sledge images. The presence of the species was also detected in beam trawl and experimental bottom trawl samples in the Ibiza Channel, and in several Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and beam trawl sampling stations in Ses Olives seamount in the Mallorca Channel. The I. elongata field observed off south-eastern Menorca was one of the densest (with maximum values of 6.7 colonies/m2) described thus far in the western Mediterranean Sea. The identification and location of these habitats are of high conservation interest, as they can be useful for an appropriate spatial planning of marine areas and ecosystem-based fisheries management; this information could be especially relevant for an adequate management of deep-water benthic habitats  and living resources. The challenge is to combine the conservation of ecosystems with the sustainability of fisheries, which are both objectives of the Common Fisheries Policy and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive

Tracking the Lionfish (Pterois miles) invasion through public engagement: new records and implications for Species Distribution Models in the Mediterranean Sea

    Get PDF
A comprehensive update on the distribution of lionfish (Pterois miles) in the Mediterranean Sea was conducted by documenting 16 newly confirmed photographic records from southern Italy, collected through a national alert campaign supported by three Italian ministries. The campaign, titled Attenti a quei 4! (“Beware of those 4!”), also led to the detection of other invasive species, although lionfish were the most frequently recorded. These new observations, along with 60 georeferenced records from recent scientific literature, were integrated into the www.ormef.eu dataset, resulting in the most up-to-date compilation of P. miles records in the Mediterranean as of March 2025. This updated dataset, now comprising a total of 1,840 georeferenced records, was visualized in a distribution map and compared with predictions made by previously published species distribution models. Notably, most new occurrences were concentrated in the Ionian Sea, a region where climate change projections had previously identified a high risk of invasion for this tropical species. These findings offer valuable insights into the ongoing expansion of P. miles, lending support to model predictions of high-risk areas

Milk Yielding-Associated Hypokalemia and Treatment with Potassium Chloride in Holstein Dairy Cows

    Get PDF
SUMMARY: Potassium (K) is a major electrolyte in intracellular fluids. Milk as an intracellular fluid contains large amounts of K, and high-milk yielding cows always obligatory excreted significant amounts of K in milk, so they may be exposed to hypokalemia. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the serum K changes related to different milk production levels and to evaluate the treatment of the possible hypokalemic dairy cows with gelatin capsules of potassium chloride (KCl). 135 and 170 lactating dairy cows were studied from two farms (Isfahan and Behbahan, respectively) with different milk production levels. Blood samples were taken and serum K values were determined. In Behbahan farm, 12 out of 23 high-producing hypokalemic cows were randomly enrolled to treatment with KCl. Each cow received two capsules (each containing 100 g) at a 12-h interval and blood samples were taken at five-time points after administration. The results revealed that 31.6% of very high-producing (VHP), 11.4% of high-producing (HP), and 12.5% of medium-producing (MP) cows in Isfahan and 28.7% of HP, 11.1% of MP, and 8% of low-producing (LP) cows in Behbahan farm were hypokalemic. A significant K rising was observed only at 1/2 and 1 day after KCl feeding (p < 0.05), but it was below the physiologic level. In conclusion, HP dairy cows are at the highest risk for hypokalemia compare to the MP and LP ones, without underlying diseases and these hypokalemic cases require more and longer K doses than the conventional total doses
