The study of the history of medicine has expanded considerably to encompass its connections, among others, with literature, the visual arts, poetry, bioethics and sociology. The branch of the latter that analyses medical organisations and institutions and examines how social and cultural factors shape health and medicine, is termed medical sociology.1 However, although as early as 1894 Charles McIntire defined medical sociology as ‘the science of the social phenomena of the physicians themselves as a class apart and separate’2 the collective social advancement of medical practitioners and donors to health institutions has been scarcely investigated. We therefore undertook the present pilot study. Our research, initiated with a painting depicting a group of predominantly nineteenth-century Greek benefactors, aims to present the lives and works of two prominent figures among them: Baron Konstantinos Bellios and Apostolos Arsakis (known in Romania as Apostol Arsache), both closely associated with medicine and medical institutions. In addition to the biographies of these two eminent benefactors, the study explores in depth the social trajectories of these once impoverished, uneducated Vlach boys who rose to become wealthy, educated, aristocratic Greek national benefactors

The bergsonian concept of “durée” in the poetry of Andreas Empeirikos:  An illustrative example from “Argo” This paper endeavors to illuminate the presence of the bergsonian concept of “durée” within the poetry of Andreas Empeirikos. It seeks to examine an illustrative example of this presence in the form of an “epiphany of the past recaptured” found in his novel “Argo”. “Durée”, considered one of the most profound concepts of bergsonism, encapsulates the idea of fluid and undivided time, wherein the past and present seamlessly interpenetrate through the faculties of memory. Bergson emphasizes that a poet has the capacity to reveal this interpenetration and portray the fluidity inherent to the “real durée”. In “Argo” the enigmatic character Don Pedro undergoes an “epiphany of the past recaptured”. Within this experience two significant events, profoundly relevant to his psyche, interpenetrate: the (present) witnessing of his daughter’s intimacy with her lover and the (past) recollection of the Freudian “primordial scene”. Empeirikos adeptly incorporates the bergsonian concept of “durée” into his literary work, adopting it in a manner akin to Deleuze, even though he wrote “Argo” two decades before the advent of Bergsonism. The bergsonian concept of “durée” in the poetry of Andreas Empeirikos: An illustrative example from “Argo” This paper endeavors to illuminate the presence of the bergsonian concept of “durée” within the poetry of Andreas Empeirikos. Has Europe learned the lessons of territory? An African perspective on Oscar Mazzoleni's book

    Get PDF
N/AIn his book, Territory and democratic politics: A critical introduction (2024), Oscar Mazzoleni reflects upon territory, and the outcome this notion creates. He pushes back against the trend of "deterritorialization" in social sciences and underlines a need for a correct understanding of territory for management of late modernity issues inclusive of citizenship, nationalism and migration. Mazzoleni further opined that ‘territory can hardly be understood as an area or a geographical space but it is an aspect of identities and politics’. Within this context, by dwelling on the territory/identity/power connection, Mazzoleni offers valuable insights into most of the problems that affect democracies today. This review contextualizes and refines Mazzoleni’s work through a lens by addressing fundamental issues related to the African context. The purpose of this article is to deconstruct the arduous nature of the land and the dynamics of democratization in Africa, which still lags in responding to the challenges of decolonization, not to mention the colonial invention of borders and nations

Epidemiology of Q fever in milk by using nested-PCR targeting the repetitive elements IS1111 and COM1 genes in Coxiella burnetii in Iran

    Get PDF
Q fever, which is caused by Coxiella burnetii, distributes worldwide. The main reservoirs of the disease are small ruminants. However, many species of animals can be infected. Humans and animals get Q fever when they breathe in contaminated aerosols accompanied by C. burnetii. The excreted bacterium in the milk could infect animals and humans. In this cross-sectional study, the number 416 cattle milk samples were collected randomly from dairy herds in Khorramabad, Iran in 2019. All the samples were analyzed for the presence of C. burnetii by nPCR targeting two different genes (Trans, Com1). The PCR products were examined by electrophoresis using an agarose gel. All milk samples were subjected to DNA extraction and examined by a high specific nested-PCR method. The frequency of C. burnetii in the evaluated samples using OMP and IS1111 target genes were 24 (5.8%) (95% CI: 3.9%-8.6%), and 60 (14.4%) (95% CI: 11.4%-18.1%) respectively. The results of this study show that Trans-PCR is highly sensitive and useful for the direct detection of C. burnetii in milk samples. This technique is a one-step and fast process in comparison to the other assays. The overall results of this study indicated that cattle milk can be a potential reservoir for C. burnetii in Iran

The effect of processing methods of canola seed on growth performance, blood parameters, liver enzymes, and immune status of broiler chickens

Canola meal is a protein source for poultry feeding. Canola has anti-nutritional compounds whose effects can be reduced during processing. The research aim is to investigate the processing methods of canola seed by irradiation, roasting, and enzyme methods on the broiler chicken traits. To experiment, 450 day-old broiler chickens of the Ross 308 strain were placed in 30 pens. Treatments included the control treatment (without canola seeds), the treatment containing raw canola seeds, and 3 treatments processed by enzymes, gamma rays, and roasting methods. Repeat were 6 in all treatments. The traits were growth performance, blood and immune parameters, liver enzymes, and antibody titers against Bronchitis and Gumboro disease. GLM procedure and Duncan's test (α=0.05) by SAS software were used for data analysis and to compare treatment' means, respectively. The processing methods effect was significant (P<0.01) on the protein solubility percentage in KOH, the peroxide number, and the urease activity. Also, the processing methods effect was significant (P<0.05) on the feed consumption in different rearing phases, body weight gains in the starter and grower phases, FCR in all rearing phases, the total protein concentration, uric acid, kidney enzymes, and antibody titers. In general, the gamma radiation and roasting improved the chicken's traits. The canola seed processing increases the absorption of its nutrients by reducing anti-nutrient compounds. Improving antibody titers against Bronchitis and Gumboro diseases is very effective in health management and herd vaccination, and will reduce related costs. Feed processing can change nutrient requirements by influencing activities related to feed consumption

Effects on beef microstructure using fractal dimension and ANN modelling

    Get PDF
The freezing time of beef has been predicted using an artificial neural network (ANN), which relies on data obtained from the microstructure of meat. For this reason, cross-sectional images of beef meat were captured during six periods of frozen storage (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 months after slaughter). The equivalent diameter and ratio of area of the ice crystals relative to the cell were determined, and the fractal dimension was chosen to describe the porous microstructure due to the crystallization of ice in frozen beef. As a result, when meat has been frozen for a long time, larger ice crystals form. In contrast, the fractal dimension decreased with the change in the microstructure of muscle tissue during storage. Artificial neural network analysis (ANN) revealed a high accuracy of prediction performance for each morphological attribute. These results show that the fractal dimension can be used as an effective method to characterize the structure of beef during frozen storage, and ANN models can successfully describe structural changes in beef meat during frozen storage
