Afterword. Decentring and Renarrating Europe (One More Time): Echoes of War (One More Time)

    No full text
This Afterword examines how the Russo-Ukrainian War and shifting geopolitics have reshaped historiography, particularly regarding Europe’s evolving borders, centres and peripheries. The war accelerated calls to decolonise Slavic, Russian and European studies, emphasising the agency of Ukraine. Ultimately, the war has reinvigorated debates about Europe’s identity, reminding scholars that Europe is not monolithic but a mosaic of shifting, intersecting regional, global and contested stories

Honorands and Slave-owners: Tracing the Fortunes of an Achaian Elite Family in IG IX 12 3, 721

    No full text
This article is a study of a single block of marble from the West Lokrian polis of Chaleion, which hosts three separate inscriptions (IG IX 12 3, 721a-c): a dedication, a proxeny decree and a manumission by sale to Apollo. I first provide an overview of the history of the stone, as well as the dates, content and context of each inscription. I then propose that the homonymity between Kleogenes of Aigion, the recipient of proxenia in text b, and the Kleogenes who manumits his slave in text c suggests that they belonged to the same family. I explore the implications of this identification for tracing the fortunes of an elite Peloponnesian family in the wake of the disaster of 146. Furthermore, I argue that the act of freeing an enslaved person, along with its record, was employed by the second Kleogenes as a means of performing and establishing his own status. I suggest that this example is indicative of the fact that manumission inscriptions were firmly embedded within a culture of conspicuous elite display

This reflexive piece offers a critical reflection on my scholarly trajectory by mapping the theoretical and political commitments that have shaped my academic work over time. Drawing from lived experiences of dislocation, and political urgency, I trace how my scholarship has developed across three interrelated thematic domains: (1) the discursive construction and normalization of far-right authoritarianism, (2) the ideological functions of education as a contested site within capitalist structures, and (3) the centrality of historical thinking as a methodological, epistemological, and political imperative. Grounded in Critical Theory —particularly the Frankfurt School— and articulated through Critical Discourse Studies and Critical Pedagogy, I examine how my work has aimed to expose and disrupt the logics of neoliberalism, authoritarianism, and epistemic violence. Across these domains, I argue that critique is not a methodological add-on but a historically and politically situated praxis. This paper is both an intellectual memoir and a synthesis of scholarly contributions, foregrounding the imperative to historicize, politicize, and radicalize intellectual labor in the service of social transformation

Discourse and Mediation: A Historical Overview of Theoretical Narratives and Research Agendas

This article examines key conceptualizations of discourse that have shaped scholarly analyses of mediation, communicative networks, and practices of digital modernity across the social sciences and humanities throughout the 20th century. It traces four influential frameworks through which discourse has been appropriated: (1) discourse as communicative power, (2) discourse as popular empowerment, (3) discourse as the textualization of power, and (4) discourse as symbolic power. These frameworks reveal distinct analytical orientations to the political and popular dimensions of mediation, and reflect varying understandings of the power of discourse as shaped through language and visuality in the construction of social realities. The article concludes by briefly addressing how these conceptualizations of discourse and power are being reconfigured in the context of machine learning, algorithmic mediation, and big data in the digitized landscape of the 21st century

This study explores the characteristics of the content and organization of the pedagogical knowledge of secondary school teachers who teach Mathematics. For the purposes of the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted with two teachers who teach Mathematics in secondary schools in Northern Greece, as well as semi-structured observations of Mathematics lessons in their classrooms. The two participating teachers have sufficient teaching experience but have different professional paths, as the former is a mathematician, while the second is a physicist who teaches Mathematics for the first time in his career so far. The results highlight a more flexible perception and practice of the teacher with a non-traditional professional development pathway compared to those of the teacher with a traditional professional identity

To Be Human is to Be Better: A Discussion with Julian Savulescu

    No full text
In this paper, Julian Savulescu discusses humanity’s trajectory – past, present, and future. As the world undergoes relentless transformation driven by technological advancements, some pressing questions arise: Is it time to provide modern solutions to old problems such as discrimination, inequality, and crime? Should people retain absolute autonomy over their decisions, even in the case that their judgment may falter? What role is Artificial Intelligence going to play in our day-to-day lives, and how far could it go? This dialogue unveils a visionary blueprint for humanity, regarding how much could really be achieved with the help of technology, what are some of the difficult decisions we would have to make, and ultimately what would it look like if we tried to use the tools we have to actually create a society that values justice and equality above individual freedom

A functional trait-based approach to disentangle trawling disturbance on bentho-demersal assemblage composition: Evidence from a heavily exploited fishing ground (South-central Mediterranean Sea)

    No full text
Trawling along continental shelves causes severe disruptions to benthic communities by altering sedimentary compositions and increasing species mortality, thus favoring opportunistic species over long-living, ecologically important ones. This study was carried out in the southern Strait of Sicily, a highly exploited fishing ground, using a trait-based ecosystem approach to assess the impacts of trawling in sandy and muddy sediments. The intensity of fishing here, measured by the swept area ratio (0.36-37.37), has exhibited a gradient from coastline to offshore, peaking along the eastern continental shelf. Surveys, being part of studies, captured 8191 individuals from 103 species (70% demersal). Demersal species’ density decreased with fishing intensity but increased with temperature, while benthic species density correlated positively with temperature and chlorophyll concentration. Taxonomic diversity was unaffected by fishing intensity but driven by chlorophyll, negatively for demersal species and positively for benthic diversity. Functional diversity showed no significant variation. Multivariate analysis explained limited variance in taxonomic and functional composition, highlighting the homogenization of benthic communities due to chronic trawling and bathymetric variation. Assemblages in this study reflected long-term exploitation, favoring opportunistic species and masking functional adaptations to fishing and environmental gradients. These findings emphasize the subtle yet significant impacts of chronic disturbances on benthic ecosystems, underscoring the value of trait-based analyses for assessing ecological responses in highly exploited zones

Marine Amphipods of the Macaronesian archipelagos and north-west African margin: checklist and geographical distribution

    No full text
An updated amphipod checklist for 2024 is given for the amphipods recorded from the adlittoralto abyssal zones of the Macaronesian archipelagos and the north-west African margin. Four marine regions are taken into account: 1) North West Africa (NWA), 2) Mauritania and Senegal (SEN), 3) Canary, Selvagens and Madeira Archipelagos (CAN MAD) and 4) the Cabo Verde Archipelago (CV). The total number of species recorded in these four regions is 509. CAN-MAD is the region with the greatest species richness (302 species), followed by NWA (297 species), SEN (152 species) and finally CV (122 species). Among the 509 species recorded, 66 have been described from this region while 59 are endemic. The most diverse family is the Ampeliscidae Krøyer, 1842 (32 species), the Scinidae Stebbing, 1888 (29 species), the Caprellidae Leach, 1814 (22 species). Then, five other families are each represented by 16 species or more, the Photidae Boeck, 1871, Maeridae Krapp-Schickel, 2008 and Ischryroceridae Stebbing, 1899 (17 species), Aoridae Stebbing, 1899 and Hyalidae Bulyčeva, 1957 (16 species). Only five species are non-indigenous or possibly non-indigenous. The biogeographical affinities of the benthic amphipods are highlighted by comparing them with communities from the continental/insular shelf of the four regions studied here as well as with three neighbouring areas, i.e.: part of the Lusitanian maritime province (BIS-IBE), the Mediterranean shores of Morocco and Algeria (MOR-ALG) and the Azores Archipelago (AZO). The CV and SEN fauna are distinguishable from the others, which form two main groups: the NWA, MORALG and BIS-IBE on the one hand, and the CAN-MAD and AZO archipelagos on the other. Future research should be focused along the coasts of Mauritania and Senegal and around the Cabo Verde Archipelago where there is a lack of knowledge not only on amphipods but also regarding marine invertebrate biodiversity in general. Special attention should be paid to biofouling in harbours since this is liable to increase the number of non-indigenous species which appears to be very low in the Macaronesian archipelagos in spite of the intense maritime traffic

Infralittoral coralligenous reefs: a modified ESCA index for the ecological quality assessment

    No full text
Coralligenous reefs characterize the circalittoral zone of the Mediterranean Sea, but, in many areas, they are also distributed within the infralittoral zone. Despite their wide distribution, the infralittoral coralligenous reefs are less considered in monitoring programs and no specific methods have yet been developed for their assessment. This study aims at testing a modified ESCA index (I-ESCA) on the infralittoral coralligenous reefs in order to propose a new tool suitable to evaluate the ecological quality of this habitat. Thirteen sites were sampled in the western Mediterranean Sea and the relationship between I-ESCA and the Anthropization Index was tested with a regression model in order to evaluate the response of the index to human pressures. Infralittoral coralligenous assemblages were dominated by macroalgae, while the bryozoan Myriapora truncata and the cnidarian Parazoanthus axinellae were the most widespread animals. The I-ESCA index allowed to highlight the level of human pressures of the sites similarly to ESCA. Thus, results of this study suggested the possibility of applying the index also to the infralittoral habitat using an adequate calibration of the original method on the new spatial scale and reference conditions
