Tell me a curious (hi)story. Historical content in Vitruvius’ De architectura
The article examines the significance of history–themed passages (historiae) in Vitruvius’ architectural treatise De architectura and assesses their veracity vis–à–vis their rhetorical impact. The article’s particular focus lies on Vitruvius’ reflections on history, since the sound knowledge of it—as the author claims—is vital for any competent architect. It asserts that Vitruvius tends to stretch the historical truth whenever he makes an attempt at self–promotion (as an author or an architect) or seeks to win the approval of his patron emperor Augustus, to whom he dedicated his work. The article examines the significance of history–themed passages (historiae) in Vitruvius’ architectural treatise De architectura and assesses their veracity vis–à–vis their rhetorical impact. Lekarz Hermiasz z Kos w świetle źródeł epigraficznych
The aim of my article is to discuss six Hellenistic inscriptions which mention Hermias, son of Emmenidas, a distinguished physician from Kos. Two longer honorary inscriptions are connected with Hermias’ five-year stay on the island of Crete as a public doctor. The epigraphic sources in question will be carefully reviewed, translated into Polish and commented on the article. The aim of my article is to discuss six Hellenistic inscriptions which mention Hermias, son of Emmenidas, a distinguished physician from Kos. Perypetie Maksymiana, czyli o paratekstach, zmienności gustów czytelniczych i łabędzim śpiewie elegii rzymskiej
Varied were the vicissitudes of Maximianus, whose unique opus elegiacum marks a swan song of sorts of the Roman elegy. No less interesting, however, are the changes in the reception of this text, i.e., following H.R. Jauss’s understanding of the term, in the modes of its interpretation by readers through the centuries. They can be efficiently traced by analyzing varied codicological data and, in particular, some paratexts (introductory notes/accessus, marginal notations, tituli, subscriptiones etc.) accompanying the author and his work as transmitted in a manuscript or an early printed book. Such data provide also us with a great deal of information concerning the generic classification of a text, as based on the Erwartungshorizont, or the horizon of expectations of its literary audience at a certain moment in history. As I demonstrate throughout my article, the historical flexibility of the interpretations of Maximianus’s opus is an excellent example of the above-mentioned phenomenon.Varied were the vicissitudes of Maximianus, whose unique opus elegiacum marks a swan song of sorts of the Roman elegy. Heksametr „kunsztowny” i inne formy sztuczne w twórczości Jurgi Valentina Winthera [1578–1623]
The article describes selected poetry by the Pomeranian diplomat Jurga Valentin Winther (1578–1623), which can be included in the inter–genre category of ‘poesis artificiosa’. The works discussed include: anagram, chronogram, acrostic, palindrome, ‘versus concordans’, emblem, labyrinth. The poetic repertoire of Winther clearly shows that while writing, he readily experimented with form, and his searches and innovations sometimes elude genology. The article describes selected poetry by the Pomeranian diplomat Jurga Valentin Winther (1578–1623), which can be included in the inter–genre category of ‘poesis artificiosa’. Z Wielkopolski na Helikon. Rozważania o życiu i twórczości Bonawentury Czesława Graszyńskiego (1859–1922) w stulecie śmierci polsko-greckiego poety
The aim of my paper is to present the life and poetical works of Bonawentura Czesław Graszyński (1859–1922), a Polish classical philologist, who wrote a number of tragedies and lyrical poems in Ancient Greek. He was born in Murowana Goślina (Greater Poland). After graduating from the high school in Leszno (Greater Poland), he studied medicine and classical philology from 1879 to 1887 at the University of Greifswald. In 1908 he received awards from the Academy of Athens, as well as George I of Greece. It can be said that Graszyński conquered Mount Helicon as a symbol of poetical mastery in Polish-Greek literature. The aim of my paper is to present the life and poetical works of Bonawentura Czesław Graszyński (1859–1922), a Polish classical philologist, who wrote a number of tragedies and lyrical poems in Ancient Greek. Niewydane tłumaczenie epigramów Sarbiewskiego, czyli uwagi o działalności przekładowej prof. Zofii Abramowiczówny
The paper describes a Polish translation of M. K. Sarbiewski’s Latin epigrams made by Zofia Abramowicz (1906–1988) during the interwar period. These epigrams (partially preserved) were prepared to be published in 1939 or 1940 by Prof. Ryszard Ganszyniec in his „Filomata” Press. Abramowicz’s translational work seems to be a part of history of the classical philology in Poland. The paper describes a Polish translation of M. K. The Philosopher’s Diet in Porphyry’s De Abstinentia: Characterizing a Historical Legacy of Minimalism in Food Consumption [Dieta filozofa w dziele Porfiriusza „De Abstinentia”. Charakterystyka historycznego dziedzictwa minimalizmu w konsumpcji pokarmów]
Historical legacy, as an important constituent for the evaluation of the extent to which the past influences the present, sheds much light on some of the broader issues of the relation between the past and the present. One of the components of historical legacy is human food consumption habits. The domain of food consumption habits, in traditional Greek and Roman culture, contains a fairly noticeable diversity as it fluctuates between what seems to be two wide poles of dietary practices such as a simple diet, with the focus on minimalism and health and a luxury diet, with the focus on excess and extravagance. These poles, upon close analysis, have determined the dietary customs of antiquity while also formed a gastronomic identity. The impact of this historical legacy seems to have not only flavored Porphyry’s discussion of the nature of the philosopher’s diet in On Abstinence from Killing Animals but has also served in characterizing an advanced stage of minimalism in Greek and Roman food consumption habits.Historical legacy, as an important constituent for the evaluation of the extent to which the past influences the present, sheds much light on some of the broader issues of the relation between the past and the present.
