Polyneuropathy in obstructive sleep apnea patients
Aim: Hypoxemia due to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is thought to cause peripheral nerve damage. A case-control study was conducted to test the accuracy of this phenomenon. Materials and Methods: The patient group consisted of 45 patients with OSA who had an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) score of >10 and were newly diagnosed with OSA and control group consisted of 37 individuals who did not have OSA. Sensory and motor nerve conduction investigations were performed on both the upper and right lower extremity Mann-Whitney U, chi square and independent sample T tests were carried out. Results: Both groups had the same average age of 46. The mean body mass index (BMI) in patients with OSA was 31.81; the average AHI was 55.17; the periodic leg movements in sleep (PLMS) was 30.71; the T90 value was 74.23; the lowest saturation was 37; the average saturation value was 72.97. The other nerves’ sensory and motor distal latency lengths were more prolonged than the control group, except the ulnar nerve. The averages of the left median, ulnar, and right peroneal motor nerves’ compound motor action potential (CMAP) amplitude were lower in individuals with OSA than in the control group. Compared to the control group, patients with OSA had slower right tibial nerve motor conduction velocity. The mean snap amplitude of bilateral median and left ulnar sensory nerve were higher in patients with OSA. Conclusion: OSA-induced hypoxia may have an impact on peripheral nerve damage
Clinical Evaluation of TNM-7 and TNM-8 Stages in Patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Objectives: The AJCC/UICC TNM (tumor, node, metastasis) classification is a system used to describe the anatomical extent and stage grouping of solid malignant tumors. This system provides a worldwide standardization and is updated periodically. In this study, we aimed to compare the staging of patients with operated Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) according to TNM-7 and TNM-8. Methods: In this study, we retrospectively analyzed data from 113 NSCLC patients resected without neoadjuvant therapy. Patients with another malignancy diagnosis were excluded from the study. Patients with multiple nodules were excluded because a clear TNM classification could not be made. We evaluated patients individually by restaging them using their post-operative pathology reports. Results: The stage distribution according to TNM7 was as follows: IA: 30 (26.5%), IB: 14 (12,3%), IIA: 36 (31,8%), IIB: 16 (14.2%), IIIA: 13 (11,5%), IIIB: 2 (1,7%). Staging the cases according to TNM8, there is no case was down-staged, 60 (53%) were upstaged; most pronounced between stages IIA (TNM7) to IIB (TNM8), and IIB (TNM7) to IIIA (TNM8). Most of the up stages did not change the adjuvant treatment decision. Approximately 6% of patients experienced a change from IB to IIA. Conclusion: In conclusion, a significant stage change was detected in patients whose stages were reevaluated using TNM7 and TNM8. Most of these upgrades do not change the treatment plan. This stage change may affect the adjuvant treatment decision in a small number of patients. With both classification systems, there was no statistical significance for disease-free survival (DFS) among subgroups, but the statistical significance for overall survival (OS)
A novel prediction model for durability properties of concrete modified with steel fiber and Silica Fume by using Hybridized GRELM
The service life performance of conventional and modified concrete subjected to harsh climatic condition environment is directly related to durability properties of concrete like abrasion, freezing and thawing cycles. These properties are critical issues that should be predicted before performing experimental test. On this basis, the basic purpose of this paper is to predict the abrasion loss, freezing and thawing properties of concrete modified with silica fume (SF) and steel fiber (SFb) by using mix design and additional properties. From this point of view, a conducted experimental study was selected as a case study. In the control concrete (CC) mixtures, Portland cement, crushed stone aggregate, and superplasticizer (SP) were used in the selected experimental study. SP in concrete mixtures was used in the amounts of 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0% by weight of cement, and so modified concrete was produced with and without SFb according to the target strength of C25. Furthermore, SF and SFb were used in different amounts to modify the concrete. The SF was replaced with cement in the amounts of 7.5%, 10.0%, and 15.0%. In total, 16 different mix designs were prepared with different SP and SF ratios. In addition, SFb was added to all mixtures of designed concrete at a constant amount of 65 kg/m3. Additionally, a 16-mix design was prepared with SFb. Cumulatively, 32 different mix designs were prepared for the experimental study. Tests on the fresh, hardened, and life-cycle performance properties of the concrete were conducted. As for the metaheuristic part of this study, on the basis of the available experimental data, life-cycle performance parameters of the concrete modified with SF and SFb are predicted by using single and hybrid generalized extreme learning machine methods. Eight different data sets were generated with gradually extended input data. Two different outputs were considered: abrasion resistance (AL) and freezing/thawing (FT). Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithms were used to produce binary and ternary hybrid methods. Four different models were proposed as listed: single use of Generalized Extreme Learning Machine (GRELM), binary use of GRELM-PSO, and GRELM-GWO. Finally, PSO and GWO were hybridized and integrated into GRELM. Two quality indicators, namely Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and correlation of determination (R2), were considered to see the performance of the prediction. Scars of unknown cause, traces resulting from burning, spots due to impact on any part of the body, traces caused by a bite by another person, bruises and stains caused by squeezing with any tool, burns and scars caused by smoking cigarettes on the victim reflect physical abuse. Investigation of therapeutic effects in the wound healing of chitosan/pGM-CSF complexes
Granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) has been shown to promote the growth, proliferation, and migration of endothelial and keratinocyte cells. Chitosan has been widely used as a biopolymer in wound-healing studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro proliferative effects of chitosan/pGM-CSF complexes as well as the therapeutic role of the complexes in an in vivo rat wound model. The effect of complexes on cell proliferation and migration was examined. Wounds were made in Wistar-albino rats, and examined histopathologically. The cell proliferation and migration were increased weight ratio- and time-dependently in HaCaT and NIH-3T3 cell lines. Wound healing was significantly accelerated in rats treated with the complexes. Calreticulin Mutations in Philadelphia Chromosome Negative Myeloproliferative Neoplasms
Calreticulin (CALR) is a multifunctional protein. CALR gene mutations are one of the driver mutations in cases with essential thrombocythemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis (PMF). The aim of this study is to comprehend the functional relationship of CALR type1 and type2 mutations in the pathogenesis of Phi-ladelphia Chromosome Negative Myeloproliferative Neop-lasms (MPNs) by emphasizing the incidence, biological and clinical features of CALR mutations in Janus Kinase2 (JAK2) V617F mutation negative and thrombopoietin receptor gene (MPL) mutation negative ET and PMF cases, and to determine their effect on the disease phenotype. The laboratory results of cases analyzed with essential throm-bocythemia and primary myelofibrosis were analyzed retros-pectively. In our study of the ET cases, 18.4% CALR exon9 mutation car-ried, 5.1% a thrombopoietin receptor gene (MPL) mutation, and 57.1% JAK2 V617F mutation. 19.4% of our cases do not carry any of these three mutations. Our ET patients with CALR muta-tion positive, 61.1% have type1, 27.8% have type2 and 11.1% have mutations other than type1 and type2. In our study of the PMF cases, 27.7% CALR exon9 mutation carried, 3.6% a MPL mutation, and 47% JAK2 V617F muta-tion. 21.7% cases are triple negative. Our PMF patients with CALR mutation positive, 69.6% have type1, 30.4% have type2 mutations. CALR mutations are a new and important molecular marker for Philadelphia chromosome negative myeloproliferative neoplasm cases. Longer follow-up and larger case populations are required to investigate the effects of clinical and laboratory pa-rameters of diseases
Utilization of waste apricot kernel shell derived-activated carbon as carrier framework for effective shape-stabilization and thermal conductivity enhancement of organic phase change materials used for thermal energy storage
In this study, low-cost and eco-friendly AC obtained from waste apricot kernel shells (ACAS) was utilized to simultaneously solve the inherited drawbacks and enhance thermal conductivity of (Capric-Myristic acid (CA-MA), Lauryl alcohol (LAOH), n-Octadecane (OD) and Polyethylene glycol (PEG)) as different type organic PCMs. The ACAS/PCM composites had high PCM loading rates of up to 75 wt%, hence a high latent heat capacity of up to 193.7 J/g. Their melting and freezing temperatures varied in the range of 20.21-26.61 degrees C and 18.37-28.78 degrees C, respectively. All the prepared composites exhibited high thermal degradation resistance as well as high cycling stability even after 1200 melting-freezing cycles. The thermal conductivity of ACAS/CA-MA, ACAS/LAOH, ACAS/OD and ACAS/PEG was measured approximately 2.61, 2.40, 2.27 and 1.75 times higher than that of pure CA-MA, LAOH, OD and PEG, respectively. The advantageous TES characteristics of leak-proof composites make them favourable PCMs for low-temperature thermal management of buildings. (C) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Synthesis, In Vitro Biological Evaluation, and Molecular Docking Studies of Novel Biphenyl Chalcone Derivatives as Antimicrobial Agents
The increasing resistance to antimicrobial drugs has instigated the crucial need for the discovery of novel compounds with different modes of action that could target both sensitive and resistant strains. For this purpose, we developed some new chalcone analogs. Herein, a novel series of hybrid biphenyl chalcones (17-24), which have organohalogens in their B ring, were synthesized and examined for their antimicrobial effect. The position of the substituent on ring B was changed to find the effect of the substitution on antimicrobial activity. Compounds 18, 19, and 24 showed better antibacterial and antifungal activity when compared other compounds. Also, molecular docking studies on ATP binding site of S. aureus DNA gyrase for antibacterial targets were performed to elucidate the mechanism of antibacterial activity of synthesized compounds. Three of the most active compounds could be considered as lead compounds for the development of more new potent agents
