Prediction of Perforated and Nonperforated Acute Appendicitis Using Machine Learning-Based Explainable Artificial Intelligence

    No full text
Background: The primary aim of this study was to create a machine learning (ML) model that can predict perforated and nonperforated acute appendicitis (AAp) with high accuracy and to demonstrate the clinical interpretability of the model with explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). Method: A total of 1797 patients who underwent appendectomy with a preliminary diagnosis of AAp between May 2009 and March 2022 were included in the study. Considering the histopathological examination, the patients were divided into two groups as AAp (n = 1465) and non-AAp (NA; n = 332); the non-AAp group is also referred to as negative appendectomy. Subsequently, patients confirmed to have AAp were divided into two subgroups: nonperforated (n = 1161) and perforated AAp (n = 304). The missing values in the data set were assigned using the Random Forest method. The Boruta variable selection method was used to identify the most important variables associated with AAp and perforated AAp. The class imbalance problem in the data set was resolved by the SMOTE method. The CatBoost model was used to classify AAp and non-AAp patients and perforated and nonperforated AAp patients. The performance of the model in the holdout test set was evaluated with accuracy, F1- score, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operator curve (AUC). The SHAP method, which is one of the XAI methods, was used to interpret the model results. Results: The CatBoost model could distinguish AAp patients from non-AAp individuals with an accuracy of 88.2% (85.6-90.8%), while distinguishing perforated AAp patients from nonperforated AAp individuals with an accuracy of 92% (89.6-94.5%). According to the results of the SHAP method applied to the CatBoost model, it was observed that high total bilirubin, WBC, Netrophil, WLR, NLR, CRP, and WNR values, and low PNR, PDW, and MCV values increased the prediction of AAp biochemically. On the other hand, high CRP, Age, Total Bilirubin, PLT, RDW, WBC, MCV, WLR, NLR, and Neutrophil values, and low Lymphocyte, PDW, MPV, and PNR values were observed to increase the prediction of perforated AAp. Conclusion: For the first time in the literature, a new approach combining ML and XAI methods was tried to predict AAp and perforated AAp, and both clinical conditions were predicted with high accuracy. This new approach proved successful in showing how well which demographic and biochemical parameters could explain the current clinical situation in predicting AAp and perforated AAp

In a cross-sectional study, researchers investigated pregnant women's quality of sexual life and marital adjustment. The sample consisted of 312 pregnant women admitted to the gynecology and obstetrics outpatient clinic of State Hospital between June and November 2020. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Quality Scale-Female (SQLQ-F), and Marriage Adjustment Test (MAT). Participants with one child had a significantly higher median SQLQ-F score than those with three or more children. Participants with 8-12 wk of pregnancy had a significantly higher median SQLQ-F score than those with 25 wk of pregnancy or longer (p < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between SQLQ-F and MAT scores (r = 0.447. p < 0.001), suggesting that the higher the quality of sexual life, the better the marital adjustment. Health care professionals should be aware of the effect of sexual life on marital adjustment

Apricot is an important stone fruit species with different cultivars cultivated worldwide. Therefore, breeding programs are necessary for developing new varieties with various fruit quality and sensory traits. The present study evaluated morphological and fruit-quality attributes of thirty-seven apricot genotypes selected from several Iranian and Italian open-pollinated cultivars together with Shahroudi cultivar (control) during two growing seasons (2019–2020) using the UPOV descriptor and GT-biplot analysis. The results showed great variability in fruit size among all apricot genotypes studied. Most genotypes showed medium-sized fruits while large and small fruits were observed in eight and four genotypes, respectively. The highest yield was recorded in G-464, G-432, G-588, Shahroudi and G-571. Genotypes G-432, G-464, G-571, G-573, and G-576 had higher fruit weight than Shahroudi. In addition, G-450 and G-553 had the highest TSS (18.2°Brix) and TSS/TA (25.4), respectively. The GT-biplot analysis revealed that fruit weight and dimensions along with pH and TSS could be indicators for selecting superior genotypes. According to the present study, G-464, G-571 and G-450 can be introduced as superior genotypes and it is expected that the inter-crossing of these three have the potential to produce cultivars with sweet fruit, high yield and large fruit size.Apricot is an important stone fruit species with different cultivars cultivated worldwide. In this study, an evaluation of the yielding of raspberry of the Polka and Polana cultivars, depending on the density variants, was performed. The analysis covered the following parameters: total fruit yield in kg per plot with an area of 5 m2 in 2012–2014, average weight of single fruits (g), main shoot fruiting side branches. The experiment was established using the random block method. The experiment objects were 2 cultivars Polka and Polana cultivated in 3 variants of density: I – raspberry in natural density, II – raspberry with density reduced by 40%, III – raspberry with density reduced by 70%. Significant differences were found in the total yield of raspberries in individual years for all levels of compaction. The overall yield of raspberries was the highest at compaction II (14.97 t∙ha–1) – reduction by 40%, significantly lower at compaction III (14.40 t∙ha–1) – reduction by 70%, and the lowest yield of raspberries was recorded in their natural compaction (13.21 t∙ha–1). Regardless of the density – on average in three years – the Polana cultivar yielded higher. The year 2014 turned out to be the most favorable for the raspberry yield. The weight of single raspberry fruits was the highest at the reduced compaction by 70% and the lowest for natural compaction. Each degree of reduction of shoots density significantly increased the number of side branches.W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono ocenę plonowania maliny odmian Polka i Polana w zależności od wariantów zagęszczenia. Analiza obejmowała następujące parametry: plon ogółem owoców (kg) z poletka o powierzchni 5 m2 w latach 2012–2014; średnią masę pojedynczych owoców (g); odgałęzienia boczne owocujące pędu głównego. Doświadczenie założono metodą bloków losowych. Obiektami eksperymentalnymi były dwie odmiany – Polka i Polana – uprawiane w trzech wariantach zagęszczenia: I – malina w naturalnym zagęszczeniu, II – malina w zagęszczeniu zredukowanym o 40%, III – malina w zagęszczeniu zredukowanym o 70%.

The paper presents the results of a 2016–2018 study to determine the effect of the share of components in the mixture and the harvest date on the weed infestation and yield of mixtures of field pea with spring triticale. Two factors were studied in the experiment: the proportion of components in the mixture: field pea – clean sowing 100%, spring triticale – clean sowing 100%,  field pea 75% + spring triticale 25%, field pea 50% + spring triticale 50%, field pea 25% + spring triticale 75%; harvesting date: flowering stage of field pea (BBCH 65), flat green pod stage of field pea (BBCH 79). The results obtained allow us to conclude that the cultivation of pea in mixed sowings with spring triticale reduces the weed infestation in the canopy compared to pea grown in pure sowing. The highest fresh matter yield was obtained from the mixture of field pea and spring triticale with 50% share of both components, harvested at the stage of flat green pod of field pea

In the years 2017–2019, two-factor experiments were carried out at PBAI–NRI Jadwisin Branch on light soil. The aim of the study was to determine mineral nitrogen fertilization on the yield and selected quality features of tubers of potato varieties grown for early harvest, as well as the requirements for the optimal dose of nitrogen. Yield and tuber quality were assessed after harvest, 75 days after potato planting. The quality of tubers was assessed on the basis of structure (share of small, medium and large tubers in the yield), external defects (share of deformed, green and scab-infested tubers in the yield), starch and nitrates (V) content in tubers. On the basis of the regression function, the requirements of the varieties in relation to the optimal dose l of nitrogen were determined. The experimental factors were: nitrogen dose (50, 100, 150 kg·ha–1 and the object without nitrogen) and varieties (Bohun, Lady Rosetta, Lawenda, Madeleine, Magnolia – edible, early and Tonacja – edible, very early). The use of a nitrogen dose of 50 kg N·ha–1 contributed to a significant increase in yield and starch content in tubers. Under the influence of the nitrogen dose in the amount of 100 and 150 kg N·ha–1, a significant decrease in the share of small tubers – with a diameter of less than 30 mm, medium tubers – with a diameter of 31–60 mm, and an increase in the share of large tubers – with a diameter above 60 mm, was obtained in the yield structure, and nitrate (V) levels in tubers. The tested varieties showed different requirements in relation to the optimal dose of nitrogen, from 72 to 95 kg N·ha–1. The varieties Lawenda and Magnolia were the most predisposed to grown on early harvest.W latach 2017–2019 przeprowadzono na glebie lekkiej dwuczynnikowe doświadczenia zlokalizowane w IHAR-PIB, oddział Jadwisin. Jakość bulw oceniono na podstawie struktury (udziału w plonie bulw małych, średnich i dużych), wad zewnętrznych (udziału w plonie bulw zdeformowanych, zazieleniałych i porażonych parchem zwykłym), zawartości skrobi i azotanów (V) w bulwach.

Based on a case study, the paper aims to assess the profitability of sugar beet production in varied market conditions. The subject of the study was a sugar beet farm in the Lublin Voivodeship. The time frame of the research covered between 2018 and 2022. The research showed that beet yield varied over time, but in each of the years studied, it reached a level higher than the average yield in the Lublin Voivodeship between 2018 and 2020, also in relation to the average yield for the country. In all the years under study, sugar beet production was profitable, but the most favourable year was 2022. Income from operations was then almost five times higher than in 2018. This resulted from the favourable market situation for sugar beet producers, manifested by high buying prices and high yield levels obtained on a farm.

Sweet pepper is one of the most frequently cultivated vegetable in the world. Sweet pepper has high environmental requirements and it needs to be grown from seedlings. In this experiment, the effect of plant spacing on the yield of three Polish sweet pepper cultivars was evaluateded: Caryca F1, Mino, Roberta F1. Four spacing’s were used: 0.67 m × 0.30 m; 0.67 m × 0.40 m; 0.67 m × 0.50 m; 0.67 m × 0.60 m. The highest marketable yield and the highest number of fruits were obtained from cultivation at the smallest spacing (0.67 m × 0.30 m), while the earliest was obtained at the largest spacing (0.67 m × 0.60 m). Plant spacing had no significant effect on the content of selected chemical components. Regardless of the spacing used, the evaluated cultivars differed in yield parameters and content of selected chemical components. Zastosowano cztery rozstawy: 0,67 m × 0,30 m; 0,67 m × 0,40 m; 0,67 m × 0,50 m; 0,67 m × 0,60 m. Największy plon handlowy i największą liczbę owoców uzyskano z uprawy w najmniejszej rozstawie (0,67 m × 0,30 m), najwcześniejszy zaś w rozstawie największej (0,67 m × 0,60 m).
