Optimization of production parameters of novel hybrid fiber-reinforced geopolymer mortar: Application in masonry walls
Earthquakes cause heavy damages to occur in masonry walls, largely due to the use of low-strength mortar. The scope of this study aimed to produce a new mortar with higher strength, which does not use cement as a binder, instead of the mortars currently used as a binder. In the first stage, geopolymer mortar samples were prepared and the sample that gave the optimum results selected as the reference mix for fiber mixes. The highest compressive strength value was obtained in mixtures with Na2SiO3/NaOH (10 M) = 2 at mixing ratios. Then, seven different combinations were created for three different fiber types (carbon, glass and PP fiber). Among these mixtures, subjected to compression and flexural test with fiber combination in the produced samples, the mixture with the highest mechanical properties was used in masonry wall production. The compressive and flexural strength values of optimum fiber-reinforced o geopolymer mortar mixture under ambient conditions were obtained as 44.1 and 8.1 MPa, respectively. Significant increases were obtained in the compressive and flexural strengths with the increase in carbon fiber content in hybrid fiber ratios. Then, a uniaxial compression and diagonal test was applied to the walls produced with both normal mortar and geopolymer mortar. When the results are examined, the masonry wall prepared with fiber-reinforced geopolymer mortar (GPM) carried a load of 550 kN under vertical loading system, while the wall prepared with normal mortar carried a load of 147 kN under diagonal test. Through the experiments, it was determined that the walls produced using fiber-reinforced geopolymer mortar have higher shear and compressive strength values than the walls prepared with standard cementitious mortar. While the wall samples produced with cement-based standard mortar collapsed under the uniaxial compression test, the wall samples produced with fiber-reinforced geopolymer mortar showed ductile behavior and no sudden failures occurred under diagonal loading tests.Inonu University Project of Scientific Investigation (PSI) [FYL-2021-2780]The authors are grateful to the Inonu University Project of Scientific Investigation (PSI) for their financial support for this project, (FYL-2021-2780)

Identification of water stress-tolerant edible pumpkin seed (Cucurbita pepo) genotypes using seed yield-based tolerance indices
Pumpkin is usually cultivated in arid and semiarid regions, and the lack of water stress-tolerant cultivars is a major limiting factor. Therefore, this study was carried out to identify superior water stress-tolerant genotypes. For this purpose, 44 inbred lines with superior agronomic traits were selected from the gene pool. In addition, two hybrids (G1-Mert Bey F1 and G2-Sena Hanim F1) and two landraces (G3-Hatun Tırnağı and G4-Cercevelik) with high commercial value were used as commercial cultivars. The water stress indices were calculated from seed yields from the pumpkin genotypes grown in irrigated and water stress conditions in 2017 and 2018. The stress tolerance index (STI) determines tolerant and superior genotypes. From the principal component and cluster analyses’ findings, G9, G40, G32, G36, G5, G11, G22, G30, G37, and G13 showed the highest water stress tolerance among the inbred lines. During future breeding experiments, these inbred lines may have significant potential for developing novel water stress-tolerant cultivars for pumpkin cultivation in semiarid regions.Pumpkin is usually cultivated in arid and semiarid regions, and the lack of water stress-tolerant cultivars is a major limiting factor. Determination of the quality and phytochemical content of F1 strawberry genotypes selected in Bilecik province ecological conditions
The production of strawberry cultivation in wide ecological regions, its aroma, rich mineral content and taste affect the preference of consumers positively. The high amount of aroma of local cultivars enables them to be used as parents in breeding studies. In this study, it was aimed to determine the morphological and pomological characteristics and phytochemical contents of the superior F1 strawberry genotypes selected after hybridization with the local Osmanli strawberry under the ecological conditions of Bilecik province. Morphological and pomological analyzes were made and the best ten genotypes were selected according to the weighted grading method. According to this, the titratable acidity amount of the selected genotypes was determined between 0.28–0.51, the total soluble solid amount was determined between 5–10.5%, and the pH amount was determined between 3.3–3.78. By looking at the average fruit weight, fruit width and fruit length values, genotypes that can compete with commercial cultivars were selected and these were determined as table genotypes. While the total phenolic content of the ten genotypes selected by phytochemical analyzes was found between 2675.56–3983.89 μg GAE/g TA, the total amount of anthocyanin was determined between 156.19–39.12 μg Plg-3-glu/gta. The antioxidant amount was 18.95 μmol TE/ g ta-7.54 μmol TE/ g in the FRAP method. The production of strawberry cultivation in wide ecological regions, its aroma, rich mineral content and taste affect the preference of consumers positively. Evaluation of capsicum genotypes for resistance to cucumber mosaic virus
Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is one of the most destructive viruses that affect pepper all over the world. Using resistant varieties is one of the most effective ways to control the virus. Identification of new resistance sources is essential for the development of resistant cultivars. In the present study, the reactions of 50 Capsicum genotypes (25 Capsicum baccatum, 15 C. annuum and 10 C. frutescens) were determined against CMV-Sa isolate with mechanical inoculation under controlled conditions in 2020. A 0–4 disease rating scale was used to analyze the genotypes, and the genotypes were categorized as resistant, moderately resistant and susceptible based on disease incidence and disease severity scores. The findings revealed that there were significant (p < 0.01) differences in disease incidence and severity among genotypes. The study demonstrated that one of the 25 tested C. baccatum genotypes (KTB-11) found to be resistant, and three genotypes (KTB-29, KTB-34, KTB-57 and KTB-72) were rated as moderately resistant to CMV. However, it was determined that all tested C. frutescens and C. annuum genotypes were susceptible to CMV. The genotypes identified as resistant and moderately resistant can be used as a source of resistance in pepper breeding studies.Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is one of the most destructive viruses that affect pepper all over the world. Comparison of the yielding of plum, sour cherry, and sweet cherry trees trained to a trellis for mechanical harvesting of fruit with those trained to a leader
In 2014, plum, sour cherry and sweet cherry trees were planted in an experimental plot of the Institute of Horticulture – National Research Institute at a distance of 4.5 m between rows and, depending on the cultivar, every 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 m in a row. The trees were trained in the shape of the letter ‘Y’, with the shoots raised at an angle of 20° or 30° to the horizontal, intended for mechanical harvesting of dessert fruit with a harvester attached to a tractor. The two tree canopy formation systems at both shoot inclination angles were compared with the standard spindle crown with a vertical leader, from which the fruit was picked by hand. After 3 years of training the trees, mechanical harvesting of dessert fruit began with a harvester designed at the Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice. The trees formed in the shape of the letter ‘Y’ produced comparable yields, and also higher and lower yields, depending on the cultivar, in comparison with the trees trained to a spindle crown. In 2014, plum, sour cherry and sweet cherry trees were planted in an experimental plot of the Institute of Horticulture – National Research Institute at a distance of 4.5 m between rows and, depending on the cultivar, every 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 m in a row. Possible usefulness of shrimp biowaste as a fertilizer in the cultivation of selected species of Miscanthus (Andersson)
Species of the Miscanthus genus are plants of considerable economic importance. During their vegetation, they produce a considerable amount of biomass, which makes them a useful source of bioenergy. They are also highly ornamental and, being highly tolerant of salt in the soil, they are useful both in city greeneries and in the reclamation of degraded areas. Several million tons of shrimps per year are fished and processed at present. This generates a huge amount of biowaste, contributing to the progressive degradation of natural environment. Proper utilization of this waste is, therefore, becoming a burning issue. The present study was carried out in the years 2020–2021. The plant material consisted of two species of the genus Miscanthus, i.e. Miscanthus sinensis and Miscanthus × giganteus. Dried and ground biowaste, a material of high nutritional value generated during shrimp cleaning, was used as an experimental component of the substrate. The shrimp biowaste was mixed with the soil at a dose of 5%, 10%, and 15% (v/v). The control was a mineral soil without the dried biowaste. No other fertilizer was used during the plant growth. The plant material was harvested at the end of the growing season in the first year, and at full bloom and at the end of the growing season in the second year. The following mineral components were assessed: N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Cd, Pb, and Ni. Regardless of the species, the plants growing in the substrates enriched with dried shrimps had a higher content of macro- and micronutrients in their leaves in comparison with the controls. In the next years of cultivation, the content of the assessed mineral components in the leaves seemed to drop. The biowaste generated during shrimp cleaning may successfully be used as fertilizer in the cultivation of Miscanthus sinensis and Miscanthus × giganteus.Species of the Miscanthus genus are plants of considerable economic importance.
