    No full text
BackgroundBreathing exercises, such as diaphragmatic breathing and positive expiratory pressure (PEP), relieve breathlessness in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).AimThis study aimed to investigate the effects of breathing exercises with PEP and reading aloud on vital signs, fatigue level, severity of dyspnoea and respiratory function parameters in patients with COPD.DesignThe study followed a randomized controlled trial of COPD patients from a single hospital in eastern Turkey.MethodsThe study included 103 patients who were randomly assigned to receive pre-reading exercises, breathing exercises with a PEP device or no intervention for 8 weeks.ResultsThe use of a PEP device improved oxygen saturation, forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC) values and reduced fatigue and dyspnoea severity. Reading aloud lowered the mean arterial pressure and reduced fatigue and dyspnoea severity.ConclusionThe study concludes that PEP devices and reading aloud can improve respiratory function in patients with COPD. Additionally, reading aloud is an accessible, easy-to-implement and economically feasible method for treating COPD symptoms. What is already known about this topic?Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) causes cough, shortness of breath, fatigue and impaired exercise capacity. The most common symptoms are dyspnoea and fatigue. The treatment and prognosis of COPD require skilled nursing care. Breathing exercises guided by nurses relieved the symptoms.Information technologies are increasingly used for COPD monitoring and therapy. Remote patient monitoring, especially the use of wearables, can improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare expenditures. What this paper adds?Reading aloud and positive expiratory pressure (PEP) breathing exercises can improve vital signs and lung function in patients with COPD, with the latter being more effective.Wearable technologies for remote patient monitoring can help manage COPD and improve patient outcomes. The implications of this paper:Wearable technologies for remote patient monitoring can support COPD management and improve patient outcomes.Pulmonary exercise devices improve oxygen saturation, forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC) in COPD patients while reducing fatigue and dyspnoea. These devices help patients with COPD breathe easily.Reading aloud reduces fatigue, dyspnoea and mean arterial pressure. COPD patients can benefit from reading newspapers, magazines and novels aloud. The authors are grateful to all the patients for their participation in this study. The authors are grateful to all the patients for their participation in this study

Water-soluble N-heterocyclic carbene precursors bearing benzimidazole core: synthesis, characterization, in vitro antioxidant and anticancer studies

    No full text
Benzimidazole is an important member of the nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring system since it confers surprisingly good biological properties in medicinal chemistry such as anticancer drug applications. Keeping this in mind, a new series of asymmetrical 1,3-disubstituted benzimidazolium salts were designed and reported. The compounds were synthesized by the reaction of 1-alkylbenzimidazoles with 2-(2-bromoethyl)-1,3-dioxane. The structures of all the compounds were determined using FT-IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy, LC-MS, and elemental analysis. The compounds were used for their antioxidant capacity by commercial kit assay. Further, these were screened for their cytotoxic effect against cell lines including MCF-7, A-549, and L929 using cisplatin as a reference drug. It resulted that the total antioxidant capacity values of the compounds were found to be quite low compared to the trolox equivalent. On the other side, most importantly, two compounds showed remarkable anticancer activity against MCF-7 and A-549 with IC50 values of 18.06 and 20.44 mu g/cm(3), respectively, in comparison with cisplatin (IC50 = 83.11 and 87.80 mu g/cm(3)). Furthermore, most of the compounds were found to be safe on normal L929 fibroblast cells compared to cancer cells (IC50 values for healthy fibroblasts were 142.70-268.37 mu g/cm(3)). Taken together, the newly synthesized compounds containing benzimidazole core can be readily constructed and used as an attractive class of anticancer agents.{graphical abstracts

Impact of thermal pasteurization and thermosonication treatments on black grape juice (Vitis vinifera L): ICP-OES, GC-MS/MS and HPLC analyses

    No full text
Grape juice is a widely consumed fruit due to its bioactive compounds, minerals, and aroma components. Our objective was to investigate ultrasound treatment of black grape juice affects its bioactive components due to using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) optimization. At the same time, mineral components, sugar components, organic acids, and volatile aroma profiles were compared in black grape juice treated with thermal and ultrasound pasteurization. ANN showed superior predictive values (>99%) to RSM. Optimal combinations were obtained at 40 degrees C, 12 min, and 65% amplitude for thermosonication. Under these conditions, phenolic, flavonoid, antioxidant activity, and anthocyanin values were 822.80 mg GAE/L, 97.50 mg CE/L, 24.51 mmol Trolox/L, and 368, 81 mg of mv-3-glu/L, respectively. Thermosonicated grape juice (TT-BGJ) was tested against black grape juice (P-BGJ) produced with conventional thermal methods. This study investigated the effects of thermal pasteurization and thermosonication on black grape juice bioactive compounds and minerals, aroma profile, and sensory evaluation. Thermosonication affected the aroma profile less, 329.98 mu g/kg (P-BGJ) and 495.31 mu g/kg (TT-BGJ). TT-BGJ was detected to contain seven different mineral elements (Mn, K, Fe, Mg, Cu, Zn, and Na). Thermosonication caused an increase in Fe, Zn, Mn, and K minerals. Panelists generally liked the TT-BGJ sample. These results suggest that the thermosonication process may potentially replace the traditional black grape juice processing thermal process

Anahtar Kelimeler: Yaprak, sert karbon, enerji depolamaEnergy is the basis of life and has been the most basic element in the production of human needs. In recent years, restrictions on the use of fossil fuels have come to the fore, especially against the production of carbon dioxide as a result of global warming. Large automotive companies have started to attach great importance to the production of materials for the development of models that use electrical energy in the near future. Although important steps have been taken in this regard, the problems related to energy storage and the frequency and duration of charging have not been overcome yet. Lithium-ion batteries have led to new searches due to the reserves of lithium in the world. Intensive studies are being carried out for the use of active carbon-based capacitors and sodium ion batteries, and the use of hard carbon in sodium ion batteries has begun to come to the fore. In this thesis, sert carbon production, characterization and energy storage properties (sodium ion battery and/or capacitor) from three different tree leaves (oak, apricot and cherry) as biomass were investigated. First of all, green leaves were used as a source of biomass, and after the leaves on the tree were collected, they were washed with clean water and turned into powder in the laboratory environment. The same process steps were performed for the leaves that fell from the trees in autumn. Ash determination of all ground samples was made and raw samples were characterized by FTIR, XRD and SEM analyses. The ground leaf samples were taken into a quartz glass tube in a cylindrical furnace with three zone heating, and hard carbon was produced at temperatures of 900, 1100 and 1100oC in an inert nitrogen atmosphere at heating rates of 5oC/minute, characterization and energy storage properties were examined in detail and Na-ion batteries were produced. An Outbreak of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci in a City Hospital Intensive Care Unit: Molecular Characterization of Resistance

    No full text
Background and Objectives: Vancomisin-resistant Enterococci (VRE), is a resistant microorganism that colonizes and causes infections in hospitalized patients. The aim of this study was to show the spread of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) step-by-step in all intensive care units, which started with the growth of VREfm on 2 December 2021 in the blood culture of a patient hospitalized in the anesthesia intensive care unit of our hospital and was found to have reached epidemic size in the surveys. Materials and Methods: Rectal swab samples were taken from all patients hospitalized in intensive care units, VRE colonization was determined, the VanA and VanB resistance genes associated with the vancomycin resistance of VREfm isolates were determined by PCR method, and clonal association analysis was performed by Arbitrarily Primed-PCR (AP-PCR) and PFGE (pulsed-field gel electrophoresis). Results: In our study, VRE were detected in 61 of 2601 rectal swab samples. In total, fifty-four (85.52%) of the VRE isolates were Enterococcus faecium, three (4.91%) was Enterococcus faecalis, three (4.91%) was Enterococcus gallinorum, and one (1.63%) was Enterococcus casseliflavus. It was determined that all of the 54 VREfm isolates, which were the most detected among all VRE isolates, carried the vanA gene. In the clonal association analysis of the isolates by AP-PCR and PFGE methods, it was found that they had 12 different genotypes, 48 of them were included in any cluster, the clustering rate was 88.8%, and the largest cluster was the genotype 1 cluster, with 36 isolates. Of the 54 patients with VREfm isolated recently, 18.51 percent of the clinical samples were isolated before the survey, and 9.25% were isolated after the survey. It was determined that 100% of VREfm isolates were resistant to ampicillin, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, high-level gentamicin, trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole, and teicoplanin, 7.4% to tigecycline, and 1.85% to linezolid. Conclusions: In our study, in the clonal association analysis performed by isolating VREfm in rectal swab samples, it was found that 88.8% of the samples were indistinguishably similar, and that the increase in the number of VREfm infections after the index case in our hospital was associated with the epidemic. VREfm infections cause long-term hospitalization, costs and also deaths, which shows the seriousness of the event, and the importance of the combination of epidemiological and molecular analysis in epidemic research

Synthesis, in vitro, and in silico studies of novel poly-heterocyclic compounds bearing pyridine and furan moieties as potential anticancer agents

    No full text
Thirteen novel poly-heterocyclic compounds containing pyridine and furan moieties were synthesized and fully characterized by H-1 NMR, 1(3)C NMR, FTIR, and elemental analysis. The optimized geometry of the most stable conformation of the synthesized compounds was determined at the DFT/B3LYP level of theory. Frontier molecular orbitals, molecular electrostatic potential, and atoms in molecules analysis were performed to better understand the electronic properties, reactivity, and intermolecular interactions. The cytotoxicity of all compounds was assessed In vitro against MCF-7 and A-2780 cell lines using the MTT assay. Among them, compounds 2c, 3c, 3d, 4a, and 4c at 0.1 mu M concentration showed more potent cytotoxicity against the MCF-7 cells than the reference drug docetaxel. On the other hand, compounds 2c, 3a, 3c, and 4c are more cytotoxic against the A-2780 cell line compared to the standard at the same concentration. The docking studies revealed an excellent affinity for the active site of the human topoisomeraseII ss enzyme, which may explain the promising cytotoxicity of these classes of molecules. The in silico evaluation of ADMET parameters indicated good pharmacokinetic properties of all the investigated compounds. (c) 2022 Elsevier B.V.
