    Ирония в поэзии Владлена Гаврильчика

This article is devoted to the analysis of irony in Vladlen Gavrilchik’s lyrics, which belong to two directions in modern Russian poetry – “neo-primitive”, and “ironic, caricature-grotesque poetry”. Irony is one of the main literary techniques used by the Russian primitive poet. In the speech of Gavrilchik’s characters there is a hidden living author’s word, saturated with a hidden meaning. The recipient’s ignorance of the irony will certainly lead to interpretative failures. Therefore, Gavrilchik the ironist addresses his poetry to a reader who understands his poetic jokes and ironic games. The article also shows that Gavrilchik depicts Soviet reality in an ironic manner; he ironically reinterprets also socialist-realist images, simultaneously mocking the founders of socialist-realist poetics

The article deals with the issue of transferring intertextual cultural elements in the process of translation from Russian into Polish. The material for analysis is the fragments of the novel The Black City by Boris Akunin and its translation into Polish by Aleksandra Okuniewska-Stronka. The aim of this article is to present and evaluate the results of transferring cultural connotations and intertextual references from one culture to another. Cultural elements play a significant role in the process of the reception of the text and its translation both by the readers of the original text ‒ native language users – and by the recipients of the translated variant, belonging to a different culture. The comparison of source units and translated target units shows how different the associative circles arising in the process of text reception are. The analysis leads to the conclusion that taking into account the associative and intertextual potential of language units in translation is a very complex process. It requires a double cultural competence from the translator, and involves not only the interpretation of language signs in terms of their cultural code, but also the assessment of the interpretative abilities and capabilities of the recipients. The article deals with the issue of transferring intertextual cultural elements in the process of translation from Russian into Polish. The paper aims to present the types of semantic relations which hold between the interlingual homonyms existing in the semantic field of “people’s spiritual life”. The primary type of the relations among the studied lexical units is exclusion (the presence of a religious component in the semantics of a word of one of the studied languages and the lack of such a component in the other language). Because of the significant number of the examples of this type of relation, the words were divided into three thematic groups: 1) concepts (пассия – pasja), 2) objects (арка – arka), 3) people (лектор – lektor). The relation type of inclusion (with the shared religious semantics, one of the homonyms has an additional meaning related to this area) was observed in a few pairs (катафалк – katafalk). The relation type of overlapping (with the shared religious semantics, each of the homonyms has an additional meaning) in a given lexical field was not identified. No relation of overlapping in a given lexical field and only a few cases of the inclusion relation can prove that the resources of Russian and Polish homonymous words belonging to the religious theme of the Orthodox and Catholic Churches contrast with one another in quite an unobvious way. It is conditioned by both linguistic as well as cultural factors. The paper aims to present the types of semantic relations which hold between the interlingual homonyms existing in the semantic field of “people’s spiritual life”. Отражение национальной травмы в ирландской и украинской художественной литературе

The most tragic and traumatic experiences in the respective histories of Ireland and Ukraine were their Great Famines. This paper discusses literary techniques used for the expression of national trauma in Irish and Ukrainian famine fictions. It examines the representations of An Gorta Mór and the Holodomor in The Silent People by Walter Macken, The Hungry Land by Michael Mullen, Maria: A Chronicle of a Life by Ulas Samchuk and Sweet Snow by Alexander J. Motyl, and demonstrates that the rhetoric of a national character occupies a prominent position in the novels. Exploring images of the Self and the Other within the oppressor/oppressed dichotomy, expressed from the perspective of the latter, the paper argues that national character stereotypes function to highlight the detrimental effects of British rule in Ireland and Soviet rule in Ukraine. Imagology and trauma studies underpin the paper’s theoretical framework. The paper is part of the doctoral thesis An Imagological Study of the Depiction of the Irish and Ukrainian Great Famines in the novels by Samchuk, Macken, Motyl and Mullen, supervised by Dr. Brigitte Le Juez and Dr. Áine McGillicuddy, defended in December 2018 at Dublin City University

Rosyjskie. Europejskie. Oświecone. Rozumne. O obecności Rosji w Azji Środkowej (i nie tylko)

The author of the paper, using tools developed by postcolonial researchers, discusses the works of twentieth-century Russian writers. The setting of these texts is in the territory of Central Asia, Siberia or the Caucasus, constituting one of the factors defining them as the so-called Eastern text of Russian literature. Although most of the writers come from the other parts of Russia and – in most cases – are of Slavic descent, they know these regions quite well. These writers, however, are little interested in the problems of indigenous peoples, as long as they are not related to nationwide issues such as industrialization, collectivization or the labour camp system. The issues of destruction and loss of cultural identity, subordination, enslavement and exploitation of the local population are often omitted. The main characters in the works of Russian writers are invariably Russians, and their reference point is the Russian (Soviet) state

О модели русского словосложения с глагольной препозицией в сравнении с итальянской моделью

The paper is supposed to consider the formation of Russian compounds based on the imperative construction in comparison with a similar model in Italian. It is believed that in literary Russian this model is not productive, although it occurs in a limited number of examples: for the evaluative names of persons (sorvigolova ‘daredevil’), for the names of animals and plants (vertišejka, perekati-pole) and in some other cases. However, in Romance languages, and particularly in Italian, this is one of the most productive models, although its grammatical status is not usually associated with the imperative construction. As for Russian, it is possible to assume a transformation of the imperative sentences and imperative meaning, and only a particular modal shade of typical actions is preserved. The model itself is represented as a transition from incomplete compounding to the canonical productive model with an interfix. The results of an experiment on the translation of Italian compounds into Russian nonce compounds show a number of transitional cases, supporting this hypothesis

Англофонный диптих о России и русских Вирджинии Вулф и Джона Стейнбека

The paper deals with the reception of the Russian character (mind and soul) by two prominent anglophone writers: Virginia Woolf and John Steinbeck. Virginia Woolf recognizes the Russians and their soul through the perception of the great Russian masterpieces of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov (The Russian Point of View, essay, 1925); Steinbeck’s A Russian Journal, 1948, presents the Russians as they were observed by the American author in their everyday life, rebuilding their country after WWII. The genre specificity of each work, the differences of time, emotions and purpose of writing, the Russian “experience” of each author, determine a certain heterogeneity of understanding of Russia and Russians; nevertheless, both form a heterogeneous whole of the Anglophone perception

Традиции Ильи Ильфа и Евгения Петрова и Компромисс Сергея Довлатова

The aim of the study is to investigate common motifs, characters, metaphors and plots in Sergey Dovlatov’s Compromise and Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov’s novels The Twelve Chairs and The Little Golden Calf using the structural and comparative-historical methods. In this case study Compromise is treated as the text, in which Dovlatov determines the underlying principle for reading the short stories contained in his Compromise collection in the context of the novels The Twelve Chairs and The Little Golden Calf by Ilf and Petrov. The results of the research are confirmed by the contextual study of Dovlatov’s correspondence. This allows us to state that the novels of Ilf and Petrov are the subtext of Sergei Dovlatov’s work. The article opens totally new and inspiring directions of Dovlatov studies, since no other scholars have ever turned their attention to the relationships between Dovlatov’s works and the traditions of Ilf and Petrov

The article deals with the evolution of word-formative types of nouns with new international formants -инг/-ing, -(о)голик/-(о)holik, -завр/-zaur, -оид/-oid that can express the complex concepts of attributive and contextual content. The composition of a new type of words with morphemes -инг/-ing, -(о)голик/-(о)holik, -завр/-zaur corresponds to a historical drift in the formation of analytic and agglutinative lines in the Russian and Polish languages
