Analiza interartystyczna ekfraz: Lekcja muzyki Vermeera w interpretacji Adama Zagajewskiego i Joanny Pollakówny
The article focuses on the issue of describing a work of art in an essay. The paper presents ekphrasis and underlines the efficiency of an inter-artistic analysis in studying the phenomenon of ekphrasis. An interpretation of fragments of Zagajewski’s and Pollakówna’s essays starts with presenting two works of art, The Music Lesson and Girl Interrupted at Her Music by Vermeer, from the perspective of art history. It is followed by a discussion of the verbal accounts of the paintings by Zagajewski and Pollakówna. Their contents and poetics are examined with special emphasis placed on the nature of the suggested description as it may focus on either the subject or the viewer, the representation itself or its connotations. Accordingly, it is suggested that the corresponding modes of ekphrasis should be labelled ‘denotational’ and ‘connotational’. In his description, Zagajewski resorts to an example of connotational ekphrasis whereas Pollakówna’s textual relation is a fine example of mixing the denotational and connotational facets of ekphrasis. The article presents specifi realizations of ekphrasis and the characteristic modes of perceiving works of art and describing them. It also shows how the observer’s subjective perspective and idiomatic style of expression manifest themselves
Teoria i praktyka etymologiczna Samuela Bogumiła Lindego na tle jego komparatystyki językoznawczej
Linde’s theory and practice of etymology must not be evaluated solely through the lens of modern linguistics, but also from the point of view of late 19th century language (especially Slavic language) studies. Against the general background of late 18th/early 19th century linguistics, his theory of etymology may be granted tentative approval, even though it contains many mistakes and nonsensical conclusions. Linde compiled the views of many of his predecessors (such as de Brosses, de Gébelin, Adelung, Ihre, Wachter and Dobrovský), but also attempted to modify some of their thoughts and add his own. It is not true (as stated in Zwoliński 1981) that no connection exists between the etymological theories of Dobrovský and Linde. The Polish lexicographer did indeed partially utilise the Czech’s work. Such approval cannot, however, be extended to Linde’s etymological practices as regards comparing Polish and Polish-Slavic lexical material: even though 65% (i.e. 547) of etymological fields contain correctly compiled vocabulary, mistakes occur in 35% (i.e. 292) of them. That Linde’s etymology-deriving principles were ineffective is evidenced by the fact that each of these 292 etymological fields should – based on the state of knowledge in the late 19th/early 20th century – be split into from 2 to 19 etymological fields. On the other hand, his etymological lists that cite words from many Indo-European languages, such as Polish and other Slavic languages, Latin, Greek, German and Baltic languages, and Sanskrit, should be viewed with some approval. Most of the comparisons found in Linde’s etymological treatise, which contains about 1,300 entries, bear similar marks of plausibility. The possibility of Bopp, Rask and Grimm being familiar with the inquiries of the Polish lexicographer and amateur linguist cannot be excluded. In the 19th century, Linde’s etymological principles influenced the so-called inspired linguists, including J. Kamiński, J. Lelewel, A. Mickiewicz and C.K. Norwid

Poezie Wilhelma Przeczka v českých a německých překladech
In this article, we are presenting the work of a Polish poet from a Polish minority the Czech Cieszyn Silesia Wilhelm Przeczek (7. 4. 1936 v Karviná, Czechoslovakia - 10. 7. 2006 Třinec, Czech Republic) into the Czech and German language, as the author’s poetry was published not only in journals but also in books. We understand translation as an expression of intercultural communication, and especially in the area of the literature of a national minority, which is undoubtedly a Polish ethnic group in the Czech Cieszyn Silesia, it is a paramount phenomenon comparing the quality of literary life in the area with majority culture (Czech); as far as translations into German are concerned, it shows the interest of translators in the work of a poet from the Polish national minority, without this witnessing the emanation of a typical Polish soul in Polish literature in the Czech Republic and former Czechoslovakia, but it is evidence that it is fully competitive in total Polish national culture
Zdziwienie czy aprobata? Obraz doświadczenia religijnego w powieści Františki Jirousovej Vyhnanci
It is only natural that the rapid secularization of the Czech society has become an object of interest of political scientists, religious and cultural scientists and sociologists. The secularization is sometimes considered a result of dissolution of the traditional models treated as incontrovertible identity based on belief in the existence of the highest instance. It is regarded a donor and guarantee of absolute rights (ontological and ethical) determining the ways in which the anthroposphere operates. This situation often raises concern; on the one hand, it is related to ideological pluralism increasingly hindering the axiological agreement between all members of the society and, on the other hand, it initiates a discussion about the necessity of searching and confirming new identity patterns. Františka Jirousová’s novel Vyhnanci (The Exiles) presents the spiritual indecisions of young people and as such it could be acknowledged as a literary manifesto of this concern. The prestigious Jiří Orten prize awarded to the novel shows that religious and metaphysical questions are still important issues which do not cease to affect the postmodern world

Karta Rogawskiego. Zapomniany zabytek języka staropolskiego
The article is a new edition of Karta Rogawskiego, a forgotten 15th century work written in the Polish language. The previous edition, available only in transliteration, comes from 1911. It is a single parchment sheet torn from a different code and then used as a cover, now partly illegible. The content revolves around a scene of Jesus being interrogated by Pontius Pilate, who delivers judgement. The article provides a new transliteration as well as transcription; photographs of the the manuscript have also been attached
Z Przewodnika po powieści Słowian Zachodnich (1945-1995)
This article contains a selection of notions from the Guidebook to the Novels of the West Slavs (a working title). The Guidebook is addressed predominantly at researchers involved in comparative studies of the literatures of the West Slavs and it will cover fifty years (1945–1995) of novels written by West Slavic authors: Kashubian, Polish, Slovak (from Slovakia and the so-called Lower Land), Czech as well as Upper and Lower Lusatian, and how they changed. Each entry will consist of a brief presentation of a novel’s content, bibliographical information (the subsequent editions, possible translations; reception in the other languages will be limited exclusively to the West Slavs area), interpretation, a novel’s significance to a writer’s achievements, specific national literature and, finally, the West Slavs’ novels as a whole, a selection (maximum five items) of the most important literature on the subject

In my work, I consider the meaning of the drama and the connections between the Japanese and the European theatre, Marquis de Sade’s philosophy, the French Revolution and the history of Japan. I ask questions about the drama’s popularity and the possibilities for its modern staging
