Analysis of the Paratextual Elements on Selected Croatian Romance Novel Covers

    No full text
Rad ujedno ispituje funkcionalnost parateksta i povezanost analiziranih parametara u kontekstu komunikacije između proizvođača (izdavačka kuća) i potrošača (čitatelj ljubavnih romana). Analiza naslovnica odabranih romana pokazala je učestalu upotrebu fotografija na naslovnicama, prevlast hladnih i neutralnih boja, dominaciju eksterijera i pozadine u određenim bojama i drugo. Zapažanja dobivena analizom dovode do očekivanoga zaključka: naslovnice ljubavnih romana važan su marketinški alat i paratekstualni element budući da svojom vizualnošću privlače pažnju i ostvaruju određenu komunikaciju s kupcem, što, naposljetku, dovodi do kupnje ljubavnoga romana. The word paratext, first used by French literary theorist and writer Gérard Gennete in his work Paratexts: Thresholds of Interpretation (1997), is explained, along with its main characteristics, at the beginning of the article. According to Genette, the paratext is an undefined zone (threshold), that is, a zone between the inner and the outer, without clearly defined boundaries. Additionally, three crucial components - material aspects, the cultural-historical dimension, and the reader’s perception - are defined in order to better comprehend and perceive romance novel covers, encourage their sales, attract new readership, and preserve old readership. The purpose of the article is to analyse certain paratextual elements (character appearance, background, and presence on the covers, as well as title and author analysis) using a selection of romance book covers by Kate Mitchell (Kata Mijić) and Inna Moore (Ina Špiček) as examples. The paper also examines the functionality of the paratext and the correlation of the analysed parameters in the context of communication between the producer (publishing house) and the consumer (reader of romance novels). The analysis of selected romance novel covers showed the frequent use of photographs on cover, predominance of cold and neutral colours, the dominance of exteriors and backgrounds in certain colours, etc. The observations obtained from the analysis lead to the expected conclusion: the covers of romance novels are an important marketing tool and paratextual element, since their visuality attracts attention and establishes certain communication with the customer, which ultimately leads to the purchase of a romance novel

Notes From а Trip: Folklore аnd Other Topics in the Letters of Stanko Vraz to Dragojla Štauduar

    No full text
A valuable source of information about Vraz’s folklore travels, ambitions, and plans can be found in his letters. These letters contain collected folk songs and chants, as well as notes on his experiences during his travels. They also cover numerous other topics that are important for reconstructing Vraz’s life and literary work. Vraz maintained regular communication with his contemporaries, including the Illyrian native Dragojla Štauduareva. Štauduareva was part of a group that supported the work and activities of the Illyrians. The first part of this paper will present a model of socialization among the Illyrians and their supporters, using the example of their gatherings at the parish church in Marija Bistrica during the time of Ivan Krizmanić, who was Štauduareva’s uncle. It was in Marija Bistrica that Vraz and Štauduareva first met. The relationship between Vraz and Štauduareva was directly influenced by Ljudevit Gaj, who was related to Štauduareva by family. This paper will analyse the reasons for the estrangement between the two friends, which ultimately affected the content and tone of some of Vraz’s letters. In the second part of the paper, Vraz’s letters to Štauduareva will be interpreted using content analysis, with an emphasis on three components: (1) factual data, (2) ethnographic descriptions, and (3) elements of literary and artistic style

Within the boundaries of Bosnia and Herzegovina, very few Lasinja-culture sites have been identified. The area has thus been categorised as a peripheral Lasinja-culture distribution zone. To date, Lasinja pottery characteristics have been confirmed at seven sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Zemunica in Radosavska near Banja Luka, Visoko Brdo in Lupljanica, Vis in Modran near Derventa, Donji Klakar near Bosanski Brod, Gornja Tuzla in Tuzla, Biograd in Prusac near Donji Vakuf and Cazin’s Old Town. This paper presents the find of a miniature Lasinja-culture bottle from the Visoko Brdo site in Lupljanica near Derventa, confirming the importance of renewed excavations as well as of analysing Lasinja-culture finds from past excavations

The Birth of Greece out of the Spirit of Music: The Romantic Folk Song Discourse and its Significance for German Philhellenism

    No full text
This study sheds light on the German reception of modern Greek folk songs and their significance for the philhellenism of the early 19th century. Based on the folk song projects of Johann Gottfried Herder and the German Romantics, it shows how the contemporary folk song discourse contributed to imagining the Greeks as prototype of the natural human being and, on the other hand, to constructing a historical connection between modern Greece and its ancient cultural heritage based upon this “nature and national poetry”. The development of the philhellenic folk song discourse is examined here using the example of Werner von Haxthausen’s collection of modern Greek folk songs, created in the transitional phase from the romantic interest in folk songs to the political movement of 1821
